Sachin Dev Burman & Dev Anand

Sachin Dev Burman and Dev Anand. A combination that produced some of the memorable music of Hindi cinema for ages to remember. Burmanda provided music for nearly 90 Hindi movies of which he composed 28 Dev Anand starrers. Almost one-third of Da's musical output went for Dev. The following table gives the filmography of S.D. and Dev. It started with a movie named Vidya in 1948 and ended with Dev's own Chhupa Rustam in 1973.

I have most (24 to be exact) of the CDs of these 28 movies. I have songs of others that I do not have CDs. The only two films for which I do not have any songs are Afsar (1950) and Armaan (1953).

In the next few weeks I will upload these 24 CDs here. Some of these have been uploaded recently but I chose to do so for completeness sake. I will upload these in chronological order based on the above table.

Vidya (1948)

My first album starts with "Vidya," made in 1948. In later years, in 1962, Burman Da Composed for another movie starring Vyjayanti Mala and Manoj Kumar entitled "Dr. Vidya."

Acoustics of songs of "Vidya" are uneven. Nevertheless the songs come out clear. This movie starred Dev with Suraiya, one among several he starred with her in the beginning of his career. He was romantically involved with her for several years during this time. At the brink of their marriage, they were turned down by Suraiya's relations and the marriiage never materialized. Suraiya never married in her life.

Now for the details of the songs from "Vidya" ...

Baazi (1951)

My second album is "Baazi." This movie was made under Dev's own banner, Nav Ketan. He gave his good friend Guru Dutt his first break as a director of this movie. Guru Dutt also wrote the story of the movie. Famous character actor Balraj Sahni wrote the screenplay. Geeta Dutt, who was made famous by Burmanda when he made her sing "Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya" had her sing in this movie in a break away mold. Her rendering of the song "Suno Gajar Kya Gaaye" still echoes deeply in the depths of heart crevices. On the side, future wife of Dev Anand, Kalpana Kartik also starred in this movie.

Here are the details of the movie:

My thid album in this series is "Sazaa." The details of the movie and songs follow. The song "Tum Na Jaane Kis Jahan Mein Kho Gaye" by Lata is exquisite.

Jaal (1952)

The next album is "Jaal." This was another movie directed by Guru Dutt in which Dev plays a negative role. Raj Khosla, the future director-to-be, appeared in a small role in the movie. The song that still reverberates with romatic touch is the one sung by Hemant Kumar (solo as well as duet) "Ye Raat Ye Chandni Phir Kahan."

Excellent job.
Highly appriciated.
But a request please go slow as many of us have to maintain the ratio.
Will request you to upload three movies/albums per week.
Also if possible try to rip the songs at 128Kbps.
Hope you will not mind these suggestions.

AFAIK, 'tum naa jaane' by Lata was penned by Sahir Ludhianvi (his first for a film).

Could you please cross check and confirm.

Aniketji,

Thanks for the nice complements.

Unfortunately, I will be able to cater for only one of your two requests. I can upload these albums, say every other day. However to go back and prepare all these at 128 Kbps is going to take quite a bit of my time. I have aready prepared all albums for upload and ready to go. The only reason I stopped from doing so is at your suggestion. Please forgive me if I don't want to spend all that time all over again to rip these songs at a lower bit rate. I hope you do understand.

Taxi Driver (1954)

My next album is "Taxi Driver." This movie was made by Dev's own Nav Ketan banner. It also starred Kalpana Kartik. This was the second movie Dev's older brother Chetan Anand directed for Dev. The first movie was "Afsar." Both "Afsar" and "Taxi Driver" were huge hits when they were released. The screenplay for "Taxi Driver" was written by Chetan Anand and younger briother Vijay Anand. Vijay was only 20 when he wrote the screenplay. The story was credited to Uma Anand. Any relation to Dev, anyone knows?

This movie was almost a family affair. During the filming of this movie, when they were taking lunch break betwen takes, Kalpana and Dev got married right on the sets. Finally the romance between Kalpana and Dev culminated into marriage.

The music of "Taxi Driver" was a great success. Talat's rendering of "Jaaye to jaaye kahan" is still a heartwarming song after these many years.

When he was going through a very lean period in his career, Dev reamde this movie in 1976 with Hema Malini as his heroine. The movie was Jaaneman. It was once again directed by Chetan Anand. This time the music was provided by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The movie enjoyed only a moderate success.

Now for the details of the movie followed by all the songs. The extended version of the song "Aye Meri Zindagi" is by the courtesy of the Forum members.

House No. 44 (1955)

This was the first movie Dev was acting with Kalpana after they got married during the shooting of "Taxi Driver." This album has some excellent songs. The combination of SD-Sahir-Dev Anand continue to churn out beautiful hit after hit. Both solos by Hemant Kumar are heart rendering. Especially the song "Teri Duniya Mein" was sung with so much feeling by Hemantji. The lyrics penned by Sahir go back to his roots as a restless writer with a message to give to this world. The combination of Sahir and SD in few years were yet to achieve pinnacle with Guru Dutt's landmark movie "Pyaasa" and you can see the seeds sowed all over in "Teri Duniya Mein" song.

Another beautiful composition from this movie is the song so beautifully done by Lataji "Phaili Hui Hai Sapnon Ki Baahen." There is so much sweetness in this song that you feel like traveling to a far away land with eyes closed, both of your hands extended enjoying every bit of the richness of the loveliness surrounding you and the experience of it.

The extended version of the "Teri Duniya" is by the courtesy of the Forum membership.

Munimji (1955)

Munimji was a breakaway movie in every sense. It became a mold for many other future movies to come. It was produced by Filmistan (Shashidhar Mukherjee also know as S. Mukherjee - father of actor Joy Mukherjee). It was directed by a first time director Subodh Mukherjee. Subodh was a younger brother of Shashidhar. He always wanted to make a movie and has some storyline ideas. Instead he ended up directing Munimji. It was written by Nasir Hussain, future famous producer and director himself. Nasir and Subodh also cowrote the screenplay. The dialogues were written by Nasir and Qamar Jalalabadi. Interestingly, Jalalabadi who is known as a lyricist, didn't write any songs for this movie.

Dev's portrayal in the movie was magnificent. In the Filmfare awards competition that year he lost to Dilip Kumar (for Azaad) in apparently a very close vote. Nirupa Roy played Dev's mother and won the best supporting actress award for her portrayal. In years, Nirupa was younger to Dev in real life!

Also, Nasir Hussain practically took the same story and made "Tumsa Nahin Dekha," "Dil Deke Dekho," and "Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai" all major musical blockbusters.

The songs of "Munimji" are just super. Especially the song by Kishore "Jeevan Ki Safar Me Raahi" just rocks. I read in this Forum that Thakur who is the cosinger of "Dil Ki Umangen Hai Jawan" is none other than actor Pran himself. I can't confirm this, but definitely it was news to me. It is noteworthy that Burman Da did not have Sahir write all the songs. The writing duties were split between Sahir and Shailendra.

Funtoosh (1956)

After series of negative or serious roles (Munimji excepted) Dev Anand tries here an all out comedy with very good results. This comedy was directed by Dev's older brother Chetan Anand and it was a hit. All songs in this movie were sung by either Asha Bhosle or Kishore Kumar. Sahir Ludhianvi again wrote its lyrics. One of the most moving song ever sung by Kishore is the number "Dukhi Mann Mere ...".

Jaidev, future music director himself, was an assistant music director. Jaidev also assisted SD with House No. 44, so this was second time around for him.

Nau Do Gyarah (1957)

Dev was acting with his wife Kalpana Kartik for the first time and the last time in this move. (They got married on the sets of Taxi Driver.) Did anyone know if Kalpana Kartik acted in any othe movies besides those few with Dev?

Dev's younger brother, Vijaay Anand, made debut with this movie as a director. He aso wrote the story and screenplaay for the movie. (He shared duties as a screenplay writer with his older brother Chetan Anand for Taxi Driver when he was only 20 years old.)

Fo the first time for a Nav Ketan movie, it was not Sahir, but Majrooh Sultanpuri who penned the lyrics. This was also the year Guru Dutt's landmark "Pyaasa" was released that had the super combination of SD and Sahir performing for the last time together in their careers. Even though their respective professional careers floursihed, the two stalwarts never got together again.

The combination of SD and Majrooh proved to be equally formidable. All songs fom the movie were super hits. You knew right away that more good stuff will come out of this combination in years ahead. SD, who was famous for giving his touch to duets, had three separate duets in this movie, all delightful and superb compositions.

Vija Anand made this movie only in 40 days. The movie had very notable climax much similar to the one in Taxi Driver. This is not surprising as Vijay shared screenplay duties for both of these movies. Once again Jaidev assisted SD in music of this movie.

The song by Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt, "Kya Ho Phir Jo Din," was given to me by a friend and is only at 16KBPS. Sorry about the bit rate for this. However the vocals are very clear and I am not apologetic for including this song here (Parag should appreciate it). (Does anyone know how to beef up the bit rate from lower to higher? I have seen from high to low.) Now for the details of the movie and songs themelves ...

Paying Guest (1957)

This is another romantic comedy in which SD-Dev-Subodh Mukherjee-Nasir Hussain teamed up after the thundering success of "Munimji." This time the result was no different. The movie was also a runaway hit. Subodh Mukherjee was yearning to make this movie for sometime and finally got to make it in the wake of the success he enjoyed with "Munimji."

Nasir Hussain wrote the story as well as the screenplay. This time the team utilized the talents of the lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri. The music by SD is absolutely sweet. Most songs are popular even today, after 50+ odd years. It is a testimonial how the music stays young when it is done right. Both duets by Asha and Kishore are very hummable. Kishore's solos are still popular today. Lata also contributed couple of sweet solos. There is one song by Geeta Dutt "Gaaye Ghabrake" that was not included in the movie.

The extended version of "Chal Zamana Kya Kahega" and the Geeta Dutt's song are courtesy of the Forum members. The extended version includes the commentary by the lyricist, Majrooh. Assistant music director was Suhrid Kar.

Kala Pani (1958)

Kala Pani was directed by Raj Khosla who made his debut with Dev Anand's C.I.D. The movie C.I.D. was produced by Guru Dutt who was returning Dev Anand's favor for giving him his first break as a director. The story of Kala Pani was credited to Vijay Anand but it was lifted from an English novel named "Beyond This Place." This movie was a triumph for Dev Anand who was recognized as the best actor for that year in Filmfare awards. Also, Nalini Jayawant, who had a key role in the movie was awarded best supporting actress.

Every song in this movie is a gem. They were all penned by Majrooh. Especially Rafi's song "Hum Bekhudi Mein" is one superb composition and rendering. SD was assisted once again by Jaidev. The extended version of Asha's "Jab Naam-E-Mohabbat" is courtesy of the Forum members.

This was second time the super hit combination of Waheed Rehman and Dev Anand got together after C.I.D. (Waheeda made her stunning debut in that film.) Raj Khosla again directed them. The music by S.D. again was superb. Especially Hemant Kumar's beautiful rendering of "Hai Apna Dil To Awara."

This movie music was assisted by R.D. Burman. R.D. made his official debut as an assistant music director for the first time in Guru Dutt's "Pyaasa (1957)." Later he assisted his father again in Kishore Kumar's "Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958)." This was the third go for him to assist his father. Bambai Ka Babu (1960)

Here is another movie with some magnificent music by Burman Da. This movie boasts beautiful Suchitra Sen costarring with Dev, one of the rare Hindi movie aapearances she made. Raj Khosla directed the movie. Raj made several movies with Dev. This isn't surprising becuase when "Jaal (1952)" was being made Dev recommended to his friend Guru Dutt that Raj Khosla be considered to be his assistant director. Guru graciaously agreed. Raj Khosla worked in few movies under Guru Dutt and finally hit big time as director with Guru Dutt's "C.I.D."

When released in 1960, the movie "Bambai Ka Babu" was considered very bold. The story treaded the sacred grounds of relationship between an imposter who assumes the identity of the victim only to find the victim has a beautiful sister with whom who is falling in love. The story was credited to Rajinder Singh Bedi. But the real story, without the sister angle, was derived from a short story by an American writer named O. Henry. The name of that story was "Double-Dyed Deceiver." It was also made into a movie in Hollywood.

There are some memorable songs in this movie. Its lyrics were penned by Majrooh. Majrooh with all his beatiful creations and longevity in the film world, was never recognized with a Filmfare award! One of the great duets by Asha and Rafi is "Diwana Mastana Hua Dil." This song was picturized beautifully and listening to this song you feel as if you are frolicking through woods with gay abandon. There was another beautiful song this sung by Asha, "Dekhne Mein Bhola Hai." Surprisingly this song was based on a Telugu hit song called "Eruvaka Saagaalo" from a movie called "Rojulu Maarayi (1956)." The Telugu song was picturized on Waheeda Rehman, who appeared only for that song. Talking about "item" songs even then. Of course Waheeda was a newcomer, and she became an overnight sensation when the song and the movie hit bulls eye. Mukesh also makes a rare appearance for SD in one of the haunting songs that is his trademark "Chal Ri Sajni Ab Kya Soche." R.D. Burman wass the assistant music director of the film.

Now for the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Some more tit-bits of information from my side Swarapriya ji

1) The Telugu film song you referred to had caught eye of director Guru Dutt who chose Waheeda to be one of his heroines for the film CID.
2) This film is of the time when Lata ji was not singing for S D Burman sahab. That is why all the female songs are sung by Asha ji.
3) When one sees a clip of Suchitra ji, one wonders how come Madhuri Dixit is starring in a black and white film ! There is so much resemblance of Madhuri with Suchitra ji, especially in this film.

Paragji,

I knew about Guru Dutt. As a matter of fact he made a special trip to Hyderabad to have a private audience with Waheeda to pursuade her to sign a contract with him. Waheeda, being a newcomer, was reluctant at first, but later agreed. When Guru Dutt signed her, she was to act exclusively only in his films. But with a spate offers rolling in for Waheeda after C.I.D.'s thundering success, Guru Dutt graciously let Waheeda break the contract.

I knew the rift between Burmanda and Lataji. I didn't realize that it was during this time. Burmanda only compromised on this when R.D. made a debut with Mehmood's "Chhote Nawab." R.D. wanted Lata to sing a song in that film but originally she refused. Burmanda went to her and extended the hand of friendship. Lataji immediately agreed to sing for R.D. and subsequently many more songs for Burmanda himself.

How about that, I never realized until you said that Madhuri and Suichitra have resemblances. People always think of Madhubala when they think of Madhuri, but Paragji, this is a new angle for me.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Ek Ke Baad Ek (1960)

Ek Ke Baad Ek was the first movie whose theme was based on family planning.n The movie was a flop as Dev Anand played a different type of role and the heroine was unfamiliar to most. It did win that year Maharashtra Government's best movie on family planning. One would think that there probably were other movies on the same subject that year from which this was judged to be the best. But this was the only movie.

However, lyrics penned by Majrooh were brought to life by the great SD. Burman, who already established a name for himself as a composer of beautiful duets (of any combination, female-male or female-female) had one here sung by Geetaji and Sudha Malhotra that is pretty nice. (These type of duets started with Geetaji-Suraiya in 1950 Afsar, music for which was given by Burmanda.) Rafi Saaheb is his usual self in the solo "Ye Jhijhakna." The assistant music director for the movie was Jaidev.

All these songs were originally contributed to the Forum by Sangeetji, who is one of the Forum's foremost uploader of music and songs. The credit and thanks should go to Sangeetji for this.

Kala Bazaar (1960)

This movie was produced under Dev Anand's own Nav Ketan banner. Dev's younger brother had a heavy responsibility assigned to this movie. He wrote the story, screenplay, and edited the movie. He also had a significant role in the movie. He also directed the movie. This was his only second directorial venture. The movie also boasts Dev's older brother, Chetan Anand, in a brief role. Thus, here is a movie where all three brothers acted in the same movie.

One of the highlights of the movie was special appearance by movie luminaries. They included Nargis, Lata Mangeshkar, Geet Dutt, Mohd. Rafi, Guru Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Raaj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Kishore Kumar, and host of others.

In spite of all star presence and great story telling, the real star of the movie was its music director, S.D. Burman. A song after another song is just outstanding in this movie. Rafi Saaheb's three sols and his duet with Geetaji are beautiful compositions. Geetaji also had a duet with Sudha Malhotra, a female duet new has become a permanent SD feature. All songs were penned by Shailendra.
