Another little piece of info about songs from Kala Bazar :
That was the time when Guru Dutt was involved with Waheeda Rehman (the heroine of the film Kala Bazar). Hence Geeta Dutt was not giving playback to Waheeda. The song "Rimjhim ke tarane" is picturised on the background.

Manzil (1960)
Back again here are the hot pair of Nutan and Dev Anand. Some of the best music provided by Burmanda. Some great lyrcs done by Majrooh Sultanpuri Saheb. Some great singing by Ashaji, Geetjai, Hemantji, Mannaji, and Rafi Saab. SD already put a stake on his name as the duet king. In this movie all duets exceed ones expetations. "Aye Kash Chalte Milke", "Chupke Se Mile Pyase", and "Dil To Hai Diwana" all are superb duets. Especially the first two. Then some great solos by Mannaji. Above all the heart wrenching song done by Hemantji "Yaad Aa Gayi." So many good movies were made that year that boasted beautiful songs (Barsaat Ki Raat, Bombai Ka Babu, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Kala Bazaar, Kohinoor, Mughal-E-Azam to name a few). (Filmfare award went to Ravi for composing music for "Chaudhvin Ka Chand.")
Assistant music director for "Manzil" was Jaidev. Here are the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962)
Here is another Waheeda Rehman and Dev Anand starrer. To assist them is SD composing music to the lyrics penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri Saab. Rafi Saab has a great solo in "Akela Hoon Main." Most of the duets, hallmark of Burmanda, are pretty nice. However, the standout songs are the solos by Suman Kalyanpur and Hemantda. "Na Tum Hamein Jaano" as rendered in the rich voice of Hemnatji is very haunting, fitting the mood of the movie.

Tere Ghar Ke Saamne (1963)
Here is another great musical from Nav Ketan house. This one again starred the handsome pair of Nutan and Dev Anand. It was once again written and directed by Vijay Anand. SD was in top form here. This time lyrics were provided by Shailendra's partner with Shankar-Jaikishan music duo, Hasrat Jaipuri. Rafi Saab was in top form with a hit after hit.
I have three separate versions of "Sun Le Dil Ki Sadaa" I am uploading here. There are five other songs whose extended versions are also included here. All these extended versions were contributed by the Forum members.

Guide (1965)
"Guide" was undoubtedly a pinnacle of achievement for Anand Brothers, Dev and Vijay. It has a fascinating history behind how a best selling novel transformed into a fabulous movie. Dev Anand read R.K. Narayan's novel "The Guide" and decided to make it into a movie. Though refused by Narayan initially, Dev, a master of persuasion convinced the author to make the novel into a movie.
Next he set out to make this movie into both English and Hindi versions. He was able to find the Nobel laureate author Pearl S. Buck (for her work "Good Earth") to coproduce with him. Next he chose Waheeda Rehman to be his heroine. Initially Waheeda was hesitant play the role. Mainly because the movie dealt with adultery and playing the role she thought would be committing a professional suicide. Again, Dev, used his charm and persuading power to win Waheeda over to accept the role.
The English movie was to be directed by Ted Danielewski. Dev wanted the Hindi version to be directed by his younger brother, Vijay. But Vijay refused thinking that the movie if made would ruin the image of India abroad. Dev went back to Vijay after making more arrangements for the movie. Vijay refused again stating the same reasons. By this time English version went into production. Never to give up, convinced it should be Vijay who should be handling the Hindi version of the movie, Dev went back to Vijay and persuaded him to change his mind. Third time was charm for Dev and his perseverance finally worked. Vijay consented to direct the movie independent of the English version.
Burman da was signed to compose the music for the Hindi version. Shailendra was signed to pen the lyrics. Vijay wrote the screenplay and dialogues for the Hindi version. While the Hindi version preparations were going on, Dev spent considerable energy to finish the English version first. Which he did. But the English version was a resounding flop. Undeterred Dev decided to continue with the Hindi version.
The novelist R.K. Narayan, on whose novel the movie was based, saw the script Vijay wrote and decided to disown the entire project. His main objection was it is not true to the book. Vijay's argument was that the changes were necessary to make it to fit rest of theme and atmosphere.
The movie itself was bold in its theme by even today's (after 43 years) Indian movie standards. In the end when the movie was completed, it was a huge hit. This was Dev's first color production. Burmanda's music was a rage. Every song was a marvel. Kishoreda had a duet with Lataji. But it was Lataji and Rafi Saab that took all the accolades. "Aaj Phir Jeene Ki", "Piya Tose Naina", and "Saiyaa Beimaan" are melodious masterpieces with Burmanda's stamp all over them. Rafi Saab had three mesmerizing solos in "Din Dhal Jaaye", "Kya Se Kya Ho Gaya", and "Tere Mere Sapne." Burmanda had two great songs himself. "Wahan Kaun Hai Tera" by SD just perfectly mood of the film. Mannaji also made a small contribution by singing a song.
"Guide" went on to win an unprecedented seven Filmfare awards for that year. The awards went to: best film, best director, best actress, best actor, best story, best dialogues, and best cinematography. One of the grave omission was that Burmanda being not recognized with a richly deserved award! That award went to Shankar-Jaikishan duo for their efforts for the movie "Suraj." For all the great music he created, Burmanda probably was one least recognized with awards for his creations. (Madan Mohan was another one, but at least Burmanda's most movies were hits whereas most movies Madan Mohan provided music lamented at the box office.)
The Hindi version of the movie “Guide” was an Oscar entry that year. I just read somewhere that the 1964 “Guide” was invited to participate for a screening at Cannes Film Festival in the World Classic category. Even after this many years, what an honor!

Teen Deviyan (1965)
Here is another winner from the hit combination of Dev Anand-S.D. Burman-Majrooh Sultanpuri. There are two beautiful solos by Rafi Saab just wonderfully sung by him as only he could. There is a solo by Ksoreda "Khwab Ho" that seems to be a perennial pleaser. Above all, the duets, main piece of Burmanda's mastery during 60's, there are three of them. All are excellent in composition and rich in lyrics and beautifully sung.

Jewel Thief (1967)
It gives me such a pleasure to upload these beautiful albums. The body of work which SD produced where the music is so sweet that it probably will take volumes to describe. No wonder Burmanda never experienced any lean period in his entire professional life! No matter how many times you hear these songs, they stay fresh, youthful, and vibrant.
This movie was another huge hit for Nav Ketan. Vijay Anand wrote its story, screenplay, edited the movie, and of course directed it. The movie won a Filmfare award for best sound. Tanuja was nominated in the best supporting actress category. The song by Ashaji, "Raat Akeli Hai", picturized on Tanuja remains as one of the most scintillating number ever presented on the silver screen. However, it is Lataji who steals the thunder. She has a really a sweet solo "Rulake Gaya Sapna" penned by Shailendra. Then she has three duets, all beautiful, with three different singers. We all know what great voices Kishoreda or Rafi Saab have. But seldom we hear about sleepy-voiced singers like Bhupinderji (I have the entire collection of his ghazals, all CDs, that I would like to share sometime in the future). There is something different about his voice that is at once appealing. All but one song for "Jewel Thief" were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Prem Pujari (1970)
This is another Nav Ketan movie. But this time there is no involvement of Vijay Anand. It is all Dev Anand. Not only did Dev wrote the story and had played the lead role in it but also he made directorial debut with this movie. This movie was a commercial failure. However, SD was there to provide its music. As usual, he is on the mark and delivers once more.
There are some beautiful songs in this album. All lyrics were penned by Neeraj. Kishoreda has a lovely solo in "Phoolon Ki Rang Se." Lataji is scintillating with her solo "Rangeela Re." There is a melodious duet by Lataji and Kishore Kumar, "Shokhiyon Men Ghola Jaaye." There are couple of patriotic songs sprinkled in the movie. But the song which is a real standout is the solo by Burmanda himself. "Prem Ki Pujari" is one of those richly crafted song in Burmanda's inimitable voice and unique style that it stays wth you forever.

Here is another movie with hit music by S.D. Burman saab. This movie was made by Dev's close friend Amarjeet who was with Nav Ketan for ever. His earlier hit includes "Teen Deviyan." There are only few songs in this album but all of them are beautiful. Lataji has two duets with Kishore da. "Churi Nahin Ye Mera Dil Hai" is a beautiful melody. Kishoreji's solo "Dil Aaj Shair Hai" is another beautiful composition. Rafi Saab also has a solo in "Mera Mann Tera Pyasa." All songs were penned by Neeraj.

Ek Ke Baad Ek (1960)
Ek Ke Baad Ek was the first movie whose theme was based on family planning.n The movie was a flop as Dev Anand played a different type of role and the heroine was unfamiliar to most. It did win that year Maharashtra Government's best movie on family planning. One would think that there probably were other movies on the same subject that year from which this was judged to be the best. But this was the only movie.
However, lyrics penned by Majrooh were brought to life by the great SD. Burman, who already established a name for himself as a composer of beautiful duets (of any combination, female-male or female-female) had one here sung by Geetaji and Sudha Malhotra that is pretty nice. (These type of duets started with Geetaji-Suraiya in 1950 Afsar, music for which was given by Burmanda.) Rafi Saaheb is his usual self in the solo "Ye Jhijhakna." The assistant music director for the movie was Jaidev.

Tere Mere Sapne (1971)
Here is another beautiful album by Burmanda. It is amazing that he continued to churn out such sweet and lastingly melodious music. The music is so soothingly refreshing that it stays with you ever young, vibrant, and effervescent. I still think that SD never got his proper due. Yes, he was recognized few times with awards, but the kind of music he provided deserved more.
This is another movie where Goldie (Vijay Anand's nick name) shared many responsibilities. He wrote the story (even though it was lifted from A.J. Cronin's novel "The Citadel"), wrote its screenplay, edited the movie, played a major supporting role as one of the fellow doctors, and directed the movie as well. Wow! What a reservoir of talent.
Dev had here two women longing for his affections: Mumtaz and Hema Malini.
Almost all songs in this album are absolutely beautiful. Both duets by Lataji and Kishoreda are super, continuing the Burman tradition of outstanding duets. Lataji's solo "Jaise Radha Ne Mala Japi" is a very sweet solo penned beautifully by Neeraj. Ashaji has number of solos too. Burmanda had three assitants helping him conduct the music; Basu Chakraborty, Manohari Singh, and Da's wife Meera Dev Burman.
