Ek Ke Baad Ek (1960)

Ek Ke Baad Ek was the first movie whose theme was based on family planning.n The movie was a flop as Dev Anand played a different type of role and the heroine was unfamiliar to most. It did win that year Maharashtra Government's best movie on family planning. One would think that there probably were other movies on the same subject that year from which this was judged to be the best. But this was the only movie.

However, lyrics penned by Majrooh were brought to life by the great SD. Burman, who already established a name for himself as a composer of beautiful duets (of any combination, female-male or female-female) had one here sung by Geetaji and Sudha Malhotra that is pretty nice. (These type of duets started with Geetaji-Suraiya in 1950 Afsar, music for which was given by Burmanda.) Rafi Saaheb is his usual self in the solo "Ye Jhijhakna." The assistant music director for the movie was Jaidev.

All these songs were originally contributed to the Forum by Sangeetji, who is one of the Forum's foremost uploader of music and songs. The credit and thanks should go to Sangeetji for this.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Swarapriya Ji,

Many sincere thanks for this very rare album. Of course, the only somewhat better-known song is "Chali Hai Fauz Hamari Re Chal Chalam Chal Challam Chal" by Rafi Saab.

And, as you said above, this "Yeh Jhijakne Yeh Thithakne Yeh Lubhaane" solo by Rafi Saab is very nice, though very rare.

But, I cannot say the same of the Rafi-Asha duet, "Aao Yaaron, Aao Pyaron"! sad.gif It is one of the many songs that I always strongly felt Rafi Saab should never have sung! I mean some of those songs that mis-guided MDs had made him sing for comedians, for alms-seekers in the background, etc. with a highly twisted/mutilated voice that he was forced to put up.

Another very nice and of course extremely rare song from this film, a Rafi-Geeta duet, "Batao Kya Karoongi Main" was uploaded by Erum Ji in her thread.

Harbinderji,

If you can be little more specific about some of the titles, I probably can upload those songs for you. Few at a time though as it is time consuming to uplod an album.

Cheers.

Hi
I was thinking of three movie albums Begunah,Parbat & Badshah.I have at least two or three songs from each movie and would be like to have all the rest from these movies in good audio quality.Off hand I can think of three songs that I do have from Begunaah.1. Ai pyase dil bezubaan2.Aaja raat beeti jaaye 3.Aaj na jaaane.
I remember three songs from Badshah that I do have 1.Aa neel gagan talle pya ham karen 2.Gul muskura utha 3.Rula kar chal diye.
I have two songs from Parbat1.Meethi meethi baaton se 2.Haaye mera dil.
If possible please upload all the other songs that you have from these three movies. Also that crazy song from Begunah 'aaja raat beeti jaaye' has been available on some internet websites but its quality is so so.If possible I would like to have that one too in decent quality audio.Thanks.Harjinder

Yeh Gulistan Hamara (1972)

What a beautiful title for a movie. I haven't seen it. I heard it wasn't that good. But that doesn't matter. Dada Burman is there to deliver again. Without fail. You can count on it. This time he seems to be on the home ground with a touch of East Indian music. For example, listen to the song by Lataji and Kishore da, "Gori Gori." An absolute beauty. It exudes so much sweetness with very few instruments Burman da seem to use here. Also, Lataji's solo "O Tushima." Another delight. For people who love Burmanda sing, that includes myslef, there are two songs here. One of them is a duet with Lataji. For the other one, both Lataji and RD join him. This may be the first time RD is singing for his dad. Burman da sang for his son RD in "Amar Prem." Kishore da's solo is one of his typical numbers. Even Danny gets to sing a duet with Lataji. Danny is an accomplished singer even though this song doesn't prove it. Many years ago, before Danny became an actor, I heard his songs on a tape all sung by him. He apparently is a shair too. Quite a talented individual. Of course Bombay filmworld never fully utilized his talents.

All the lyrics were written by Anad Bakshi Saab, one of the regulars with both Burmans since "Aradhana" days.

The movie was directed by Dev's close friend, Amar Jeet who also made "Teen Deviyan" with Dev earlier. Now for the songs of "Yeh Gulistan Hamara" ...

Armaan (1953)

Here is an early movie in which beautiful Madhubala was paired with Dev. Two of them should be inspiration enough and Burmanda comes through with some beautiful music. Talatji has a nice solo and a duet with Ashaji. Geetaji's solo "Jaaadubhari yeh fazayen" exudes youthful exuberance filled with frolic and fun. Sahir Ludhuianvi Saab penned all the lyrics.

There are nine songs in this movie. I was able to collect only five of them. The missing ones are marked in red italics below. If anyone of the members have these, please kindly share them with rest of us. A word of caution. Because these songs were collected from various sources, their quality may not be uniform.

Now for the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Exon, I have not heard the songs but I feel the first in your list (Chaahe jitna--- and the second in the list of Swarpriya (Bol na bol) are the same songs. Your words come later by Ashaji while the songs starts with Talatji's words"Bol na bol O jane wale". Nonetheless, the song is a masterpiece. Going to listen to both the numbers!

Swarapriya, thanks for posting the album of Armaan (1953). Nice to see the good old fifties album after a series of albums from the seventies.

biggrin.gif

Film Armaan has been so far made 3 times (based on my knowledge), first one starring Dev sahab and the Venus of Hindi cinema Madhubala ji. The second one came with "Ramba ho.." in eighties, not sure about the starcast. The last one came a few years back starring Amitabh, Anil Kapoor, Priety Zinta.

Talking of songs from Armaan (1953)..Looks like this is a unique movie starring Dev sahab where no song is sung by Rafi sahab, Kishore da or Hemantda. Another singer (who was a SDB regular in 1953) missing is Lata ji. Talat was rarely called for Dev sahab (even in the early fifties) still "Bharam teri wafaon ka" is a beautiful gem composed by Burmanda. Asha ji gives great company to Talat sahab in "Bol na bol aye jaanewale". Of course my pick of this album is "Jaadu bhari yeh fizaayein kehti hain aa jaa" sung so beautifully by Geeta ji. GD-OPN combo has one appeal but GD-SDB has a different and unique appeal !

Afsar (1950)

This was the first film made by the Navketan banner. Dev Anand in partnership with his elder brother Chetan Anand decided to make movies and launched the banner. Later, Chetan Anand started his own banner and moved away from Dev's. S.D. Burmanda composed music for this very first movie made by Dev. This is how a long and fruitful partnership began that churned out one musical hit after another.

Dev was paired with Suraiya in this movie. In a 4-year span, Dev and Suraiya starred in seven movies together. Most of them apparently made money. These movies are Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar (1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951), and Sanam (1951). During this time their romance also flourished. It was not until Suariya's kinfolks cut down their friendship there was talk that Suraiya and Dev were getting married.

In one movie Suraiya was starring in, in a scene they were shooting for, Suraiya's boat capsized. Dev immediately jumped and rescued her from drowning. That was the beginning if their romance. Also, Suraiya's favorite Hollywood actor was Gregory Peck. Dev had some striking resemblances and even mannerisms of Peck. Published stories tell that it was another reason. Suraiya met Gregory Peck in Bombay in 1955 when shooting for a film. In the attached picture you can see this.

Songs of Afsar are difficult to get hold of. I am uploading only four songs out of seven. The missing ones are shown in red italics. IOf anyone of you have, please kindly share them with us.

Swarapriya, thanks for the album of Afsar (1950). IMHO, this particular thread is one of the best threads posted so far on Burman sahab's forum. Thanking you from the bottom of the heart for your special efforts in sharing such wonderful gems one after another !

A special thing about the song "Preet ka naata jodne waale" sung by Suraiya ji and Geeta ji. Based on my information, this is the only duet these 2 beautiful ladies ever sang together.

Burman da was famous for such lovely female duets and gave many such melodies !

Chhupa Rustam (1973) - End of an Era

All good things must come to an end. Tha partnership of Sachin Da and Dev Anandji that started with Vidya in 1948 finally ended with this movie Chhupa Rustam in 1973. The partnership that gelled for 25 years. The partnership that was responsible for 28 movies in the span of those 25 years. It produced an everlasting legacy of youthful and magnificently melodious sweet music as its lasting rich repertoire of treausre of songs. The partnership that never endured a lean period in such a fickle film world.

Not too much time after this movie, Burmanda passed away. He was in ill health mostly during his last years. Yet his creativity did not slow down. He was still belting one hit after abother. Such a consummate artist he was. Such a great traditionalist he was. Had such a great ear for melody. Had such magnificently different voice. His presence has an aura that commanded respect. You knew he was something special. You knew he was someone different. You listen to his creations in admiration.

Burmanda was a simple man, always clad in white kurta and dhoti. You know he is in a creative mood when he closes his eyes with a paan in his mouth. You know he is in action when he is tuning his harmonium. You know he appreciates what you have done, when he goes out of his way to give you a hug. Distant. Yet near to so many masses. Simple. Yet so many beautifully intricate melodies.

Burmanda, we miss you in our presence physically but not spiritually. You are always there in our cherished memories because of the legacy of music you left behind for us to enjoy. May long live your memories for many many generations to come!

Chhupa Rustam (1973) Contd ...

This series "Sachin Dev Anand" ends with this installment. It was great pleasure doing this. I will continue to share whatever music I have through the channels provided by this great Forum of ours.

This is the last movie for which Burmanda provided music for a Dev Anand starrer. By coincidence it also happens to be that of Nav Ketan's. Vijay Anand, Dev's younger brother, bore much of the burden for this movie. He assumed seven different roles in making this movie. He was the producer, director, actor, story writer, screenplay writer, editor, and lyricist. Vijay was an accomplished and consummate professional. Dev greatly benefitted with his guidance and leadership.

Burmanda provided music for another 12 movies after this, his last movie being "Saaz" that was never released. He was assisted in muic for this movie by Meera Dev Burman, Maruti Rao Keer, Anil Mohile, and Arun Paudwal.

Now for the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Swarapriya, what a great conclusion to this magnum-opus thread dedicated to music magic of Dev sahab's films and Burmanda's evergreen music ! Thank you once again for this special treat of close to 300 odd songs in CDQ. I believe that this thread of yours brought back life in this sub-forum. Its so great to see more and more members taking interest in the sweet old music of the golden era of HFM.

In today's world its fashion to talk about and praise the junior Burman (the great R D Burman, or Pancham as he was fondly called) which he undoubtedly deserves. IMHO it was the senior Burman who gave consistently "young and cheerful" music during his career spanning over 30 years. Its likely that the today's generation is not that much aware about the greatest melodies composed by Sachinda. This forum and particularly this thread is a good starting point for all to savour the sweet music of the legend called S D Burman.

There are other composers and many of them had particular likings to certain artists. SJ mostly worked with Shailendra and Hasrat. OP never worked with Lata ji and Naushad worked mostly with Shakeel. Burmanda is one composer who has worked with many if not all the major lyricists. All the major singers of the fifties and sixties sang for him. He gave hit music in Bahar and Shabnam with Shamshad Beghum as the lead singer. For Baazi, Do Bhai and Pyasa he had Geeta Dutt. Lata sang "Pighala hain sona door gagan par" and spelt magic on everyone. For Suman he had "Yeh kisne geet chheda" and for Talat he had that extra special "Jalate hain jiske liye". Hemant kumar held us spellbound with "Jaane woh kaise log" and Rafi created a milestone with "Jinhe naaz hain Hind par woh kahan hain" and "Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye toh kya hain". Suraiyya sang "Man mor hua matawala" and Manna Dey was at his best in "Upar gagan vishal". Asha was naughty in "Raat akeli hain" and Mukesh was philosophical in "Oh jaanewale ho sake toh laut ke aana". His favorite Kishor sang "Oh nigahen mastana" and every one hummed. Manhar sang "Loote koi man ka nagar" with Lata and Surendra sang "Meri kashti ko muhabbat ka sahara mil gaya" with Geeta.

Sahir, Majrooh, Kaifi Azmi, Neeraj, Rajendar Krishan, Shailendra and Gopal Singh Nepali penned lyrics for him. He was comfortable with all. His work with relative newcomer (in those days) Anand Bakshi also worked wonders. The only thing he probably never did was work with K L Saighal and Noor Jehan.

There will never be another S D Burman, no one will be able to create "Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam" ! As Mubarak Beghum sang his tune "Woh na aayenge palatkar unhe laakh hum boolaye"!

Thank you once again Swarapriya !

Swarapriya and Parag,

Here are few unconfirmed singer names.

Hridayanath Mangeshkar (Babla 1953)
Manmohan Krishna (Afsar 1950)
S. K. Raagi (Do Bhai 1947)
Hemlata (Jyoti 1969)

In a recent post, there was some doubt on the Raj Kapoor version of a song.

Hi Exon, I have added the names of Hridayanath Mangeshkar, Manmohan Krishna and Hemlata to list of singers.

Thanks.

Is S. K. Ragi the correct name or K.S. Ragi ? The only information about him is that he sang a duet in Do Bhai (1947) with Geeta ji (Yaad rakhana yaad rakhana).

Best Regards
Parag

Parag,

I read some where that he was a music composer and sung a few of his compositions in the 50s.

Prem Pujari (1970)

This is another Nav Ketan movie. But this time there is no involvement of Vijay Anand. It is all Dev Anand. Not only did Dev wrote the story and had played the lead role in it but also he made directorial debut with this movie. This movie was a commercial failure. However, SD was there to provide its music. As usual, he is on the mark and delivers once more.

There are some beautiful songs in this album. All lyrics were penned by Neeraj. Kishoreda has a lovely solo in "Phoolon Ki Rang Se." Lataji is scintillating with her solo "Rangeela Re." There is a melodious duet by Lataji and Kishore Kumar, "Shokhiyon Men Ghola Jaaye." There are couple of patriotic songs sprinkled in the movie. But the song which is a real standout is the solo by Burmanda himself. "Prem Ki Pujari" is one of those richly crafted song in Burmanda's inimitable voice and unique style that it stays wth you forever.

Now for the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Swarapriyaji,

Thanks for the excellent upload - Rajan
