The Forum says this was a 1956 movie, but my records show that it is a 1958 movie. Irrespective of which year the movie was released, the fact remains that the music given by Burman-da is it appears to me goes back to the period in which the story happens. Of course there is no "Dola Re Dola Re..." here (from the recent Devdas movie), yet there are several good songs in this movie. As an aside, Vyjayantimala who plays Chandramukhi in the movie was given best supporting actress by Filmfare. But she refused it because she felt that hers was the main character in the story as well as the movie, that of a heroine, and not Parvati's (played by Suchitra Sen). Vyjayantimala went on to win several Best Actress awards after her refusal of the award in this movie i9ncluding several Filmfare awards.

Here is the complete album of "Devdas (1958)" ...

Many sincere thanks, Swarapriya Ji, for these songs. You mentioned "Dola Re Dola Re" above. Well, does it even remotely compare with these masterpieces by SDB!

Venkat ji, 100% in agreement with you. It will take ages for making one tune like "Aan milo aan milo" and "Ab aage teri marzi" or "Jise tu kubool karle"

Cheers

With a second round of bunch of thanks to Swarpriya for sharing this masterpiece of an album by legendary Burman da, here are some pieces of information related to this film

1) Bimal Roy's Devdas ran for 15 weeks at Roxy in 1955. It wasn't as big a hit as P C Barua's Devdas (Starring the legendary Kundan Lal Saighal sahab) for which Bimal Roy had done the camera work. He brought some of New Theatre's team with him to Bombay. He wrote scripts, did the camera work, the editing and supervised the sound track and the film's music. He was a complete workman, a complete craftsman and a complete artist.

2) Timir Baran composed the songs and Kidar Sharma penned the lyrics for the original Devdas. Burman da and Sahir did the honours for Bimalda's film.

3) Strictly IMHO : Even though no song from this Devdas can match the beautiful songs "Baalam aaye baso more man mein" and "Dukh ke ab din beetat nahi" sung by Saighal sahab, Burman da gave 2 melodious songs sung by Talat sahab : "MItawa mitawa..yeh kaisi anbujh aag re" and "Kisko khabar thi kisko yakeen tha"

4) 2 songs sung by Geeta ji and Manna Dey ji ("Aan milo aan milo shyam sanware" and "Sajan ki ho gayee gori") were filmed on Dulari and veteran actor Nana Palsheekar. Especially "Aan milo aan milo" has a special appeal and the song simply flows into the heart of the listener.

5) Mubarak Beghum did not get much opportunity to sing for Burmanda, but she put her heart in the song "Woh na aayenge palatkar, unhe laakh hum bulaayein". An absolutely sweet melodious song !

6) Just like his many other films of the fifties, Burmanda used the voices of as many as 8 singers for the songs of Devdas

Parag,

You seem to be a walking encyclopedia when it comes to movies. It is so wonderful of you to share this information with all of us. The knowledge you have about this is amazing. My hats off to you.

I have little knowledge about few films from the 40s,50s and 60s. I read some books on film when I was in school and remember most of it. I got some more information on films on HF. I just compile it together and post it. Burman da is special MD for me for obvious reasons, so I try and share whatever little information I have on his songs.

Thanks for your kind words Swarapriya and Harsh

Cheers

FYI ,

R.D.Burman used the tune of

Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyam Sanware for the opening music of

Kuchh Na Kaho Kuchh Bhi Na Kaho (1942 A Love Story)

I read this in one of RDB's interview when the movie was released.
