New stuff coming out of UK is just great, a friend turned me onto albums from the VIP Records label, fantastic stuff bringing back the old school flavor and authentic instruments and of course the singers back! A must not miss album IMHO right now is Sardara's new Soho Road album, I've been hooked on it for about 2 weeks. Also digging Kuldip Manak's Jogi and Swami's Equalize. Didn't like Gurdas' very last album that much (Boot Polishan) but the stuff previous to that is good, as well as the tribute to Manoj on it. Lol @ Miss Pooja I have yet to hear one song from her which is surprising considering she releases, what like 10 albums a week? laugh.gif Dhol Vajda is pretty decent too. Also I like a lot of Shazia Manzoor as well as Hadiqa Kiyani, there's a lack of good female Punjabi voices out there in general, so it's always great to hear new talent that sounds "old".

I knew Where music is Jhonny "baau"(Dee) has to be there. tongue1.gif . so much wide interest !

Dee seems you are following new albums more then me. Iam clueless abt few of the names you mentioned.
( who is this manoj??)

I dont have cable connection at home ........so not able to follow all funjabi albms at all. But I like all of them.

In last week of novembar I had gone to punjab. and I was shocked to see the way people were crazy for Duet songs.

Duet song albums has alwys been there but never been popular like this. I shocked to see Yankee youngsters liking such stuff. usualy they stay away from such stuff. But whereever I went in punjab I found these duets being playd ( either of Sudesh kumari or Miss pooja.) Miss pooja is a rage.!
( usually truck drivers loved such albums ! )

Earlier popular duet artists included Mohd Sadiq , Ranjeet kaur(??), Chamkeela etc. I do have few songs of Mohd sadiq's duets. Also heard , Chamkila's daughter making her debut(???) with an album.

Best part of my punjab trip was I was able to get some 10 GBs of punjabi songs........from my cousin. got them burned onto 2-3 DVDs. ! ( thts diff Iam yet to listen to all of them ! ). wacko.gif

Deewani Do post abt you favs from present albums(not necessary lyricwise). kya pata mujhe ko bahut pasand aye.........( like tauba tauba ! )

Marcilo bau kithey ne........He is also one Punjbipop fan.......lagda busy ne !

Thanks

Sonu

PS : I will Try to post few songs of my fav albums either on hf or 3rd sites.

Manoj Punj was director of Shaheed-e-Mohabbat, Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris, Des Hoya Pardes and Zindagi Khoobusrat Hai. He died suddenly of a heart attack last year. Gurdas dedicates and sings "Bahute Raun-gay Dillan De Jaani, Ma Pe Tere Ghat Raun-gay" to him on the album - a must listen (with great music from Jaidev Kumar - as usual).

O Bahutay Raun-gey Dillan De Jaani….
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey….

Bahutay Raun-gey Dillan De Jaani
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey
Bahutay Raun-gey Dillan De Jaani

Chadh Jayegi Jadon Ae Jagh Faani
Chadh Jayegi Jadon Ae Jagh Faani
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey

Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey

Jinna Naal Maujan Tu Pyar Diyan Maaniyan,
Vekh Vekh Raun-gey O Teriyan Nishaaniyan
Vekh Vekh Raun-gey O Teriyan Nishaaniyan
Kehndi Apna Sain, Hogayee Ae Beghaani
Kehndi Apna Sain, Hogayee Ae Beghaani
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey
Bahutay Raun-gey Dillan De Jaani
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey

Samne Na Aundi Assi Chup Kar Lena Si
Doli Chardh Jaandi, Tera Dukh Jarhlena Jaana Si
Doli Chardh Jaandi, Tera Dukh Jarhlena Jaana Si
Charhi Aarthi Thay Keetii Be-imaani
Charhi Aarthi Thay Keeti Be-imaani
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey

Doli Thay Aarthi Da Ekko Jeha Saleeka Ae
Sajdiyan Dovein, Vakho Vakhra Tareekah Ae

Ek Gharon, Dooji Jagh Taun Vidha Ni

Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey
Bahutay Raun-gey Dillan De Jaani
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey

Dillan Diyan Taaran Ko Chedh Da Zaroora Ae
Naina Diyan Tainda Koi Gherda Zaroora Ae
Naina Diyan Tainda Koi Gherda Zaroora Ae
Aivein Aaunda Ney Ankhan De Vich Paani
Aivein Aaunda Ney Ankhan De Vich Paani
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey

Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey

Gharbar Chadhke Fakir Jede Hoye Ne
Marjaane Maana O Bhi Sajana Nu Roye Ne
Marjaane Maana O Bhi Sajana Nu Roye Ne
Rauna Hasna Thay Mauj Ruhaani
Rauna Hasna Thay Mauj Ruhaani
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey
Bahutay Raun-gey Dillan De Jaani
Maa Pe Tainu Ghat Raun-gey

Soho Road not only has great music and great remakes of old classics, it also has good lyrics, one called Peengh for example goes "Assi Tutti Huyi Peengh Da Nazaara Dekheya, Toota Ek Ek Ambaran Tau Taara Dekhya"

I'll try to remember to post here when I like a "new" album again - keep in mind my taste will always be "old-schoolish" for the most part.

Lyrics of course are by "Marjaane Maana"/Gurdas, but I'm pretty sure it's adapted from another song or Boli - it's just driving me crazy right now, because I can't remember who else did it, lol. Soho Road is the album name for Sardara S. Gill's (of Apna Sangeet) new solo album - UK release, not sure if it's released in India yet, sometimes they change the name for the Indian release. The producers of that one are Bally Jagpal, Bhota Jagpal, Aman Hayer, B.S. Productions and Bhinda Aujla. There are new versions of previous hits: Soho Road Uttey Tainu Labda Phiran, Kamlee Yaar Di Kamlee, Boliyan (Gur Nalon Ishq Mitha) as well as truly new numbers. If you like Lehmber, check out Swami's DesiRock which had his Ni Tere Roop Di Hogayee Balle Ni Balle (titled DesiRock on the album). And if you like PMC in general, then definatley check out Swami stuff (they are the same ones that had produced Nusrat Redefined - The Simon and Diamond Mixes). I don't have anything against new music, but when it starts sounding too "American" or "Western" I tune out, which probably explains why I hardly know what's going on in the Bollywood albums this year.

Most Punjabi forums I have come across seem to be majority of very young users, so not much discussion goes on that I have wanted to join in. I keep looking for an "old school bhangra" board, but have yet to find it, as you said, there's not much interest here for those periods, so I keep thinking that they are hiding somewhere out there, lol, but maybe there just aren't that many fans? I even contemplated starting one but I'd rather blog if I lean that way, and then I have a good friend who lives and breathes bhangra so I can always bug him. And in my experience, there are always tons of silent observers who benefit, but never register or post. There are some good news sites though - Chakdey.com, desihits.com, and the BBC Asian Network Chart gives an idea of what UK folks are digging, some of them have forums that discuss albums and post lyrics (music not allowed anyways).

Baap re main te samjhda si main hi sunda hai new pop song . "Jhonny bau " te mere to bhi aggey. wacko.gif

Sachi Gurdaas has written it very well. I t hink I need to listen Soho Road some day since the producers are Aman hayer and Bally jagpal . I know only these two and they are good in their compostions.
( actually I came to know late abt wat prodcuer means in UK or US albums. its the Music director tongue1.gif )

Actually there is few forums like Pjbai2000 board??, UNP etc, but those are mostly for song requests etc.

Once I tried very hard to know the men behind PMC. ( the composers). but I couldnt find any such information on any of those forums. thts why I asked for your help in boards.

You are lucky tht you got a frd. I ve to rely on my 1 pjabi cousin for my pjabi music. else most of my pjabi frds listen to hindi pop or the hit pjbai ones only.

Thanks for those site lists. It will be helpful in knowing abt songs in UK etc.

You are talking about Panjabi MC right? He's had a website for ages: pmcrecords.com. Many, many of the bhangra artists have their own websites, myspace pages, and even forums. So that's always a good place to look first. And then there's the label sites, they have good info too usually.

My pick would include Baba, Surjit Singh bindrakhiya, Gurdas Maan. Talking about Gurdaas, have you guys seen his new Video Boot paalishaan kariyee?

Will pick Sukhbir too even though he is more of "UK" Punjabi style. I am sure Stereo Nation's Tez ....Naachaan ge saari raat soneyo vai…...will fall into that category too. Talking about that kind of music we have to have Sahotas, Apache, Heera ... Sau sau laare laana tu .. aashiq nu tadpana tu... i am still looking for that song.. ...& Aalap in there too.

For soothing evening, it has to be Asa Singh mastana, Rabbi or Jagjit Singh.
One guy who I heard recently and liked his voice was Amrinder gill… his song .. kithhe ishq na ho jayee dil dhak dhak karda hai…. Reminded me of "Gedi days" and "Darshans".
Let me not leave out Daler Phaaji.... Tunak Tunak Tun .. ta na na... Dholna baaje tumbe waali taar... chal kar laaiye pyaar wink.gif

I saw Boot Polishan kariye on youtube few weeks ago, lol. But I always end up watching Babe Bhangra Paunde a few times for Gurdas, it's just so cute! The Heera song, it's not Maar Chhadapa? Hmmm I know that song, let me figure out which one it is and will share with ya. I think I promised you that before about a year ago, lol. Sometimes it takes that long for me to come back to it like the Nusrat number, sorry. Will try and figure it out soon this time. Hmm Amrinder's the one that used the tune for Panna Ki Tamanna Hai in Dildarian - that drove me nuts until someone told me what tune it was... I knew that I knew the song but couldn't place it, lol.

Thank you Marci veer. Tavanu layana hi paya kheech ke.

Marci veer my critiera for picking up these artists is tht they are full fledge artists ie composers, singers and even lyricist sometiemes. ( thts why I mentioned Hanraj separately who is my fav voice).

I do like UK stuff but not very much able to follow the latest trends as i dont have cable tv.

Amrinder gill da ek bada hi cute song sigga " je mile ho kudi" . bada " cute " song hai. then I think
" mel karada rabba soni kudi naal" is hugely popular song by Amrinder gill.

Please tell me details of the song tht you want. which singer etc.

I've been racking my brain all night because I know I have the song, I just can't remember the next line, my brain keeps telling me it's "ni kudiye haan diye" and that's wrong. It will probably end up being a Boliyan or Tappe track, lol. Marci do try to remember the cass or another line. The voice I remember in my head sounds like either Heera or Azaad. A "lighter" voice, very fast paced. (BTW Sonu, I have rarely watched desi tv and don't have it, lol - music stores keep me up to date and now the net).

Mine is based on voice and song. I really do not know much about composers. In most of the cases singers themselves are composers. If you talk about Kaurs and Asa singh, they did that on their own.

I am sure this background humming has been used in some hindi song too (starting at 1:40 minute mark).. I can't remember but I know I heard this one outside of Heera Album too. Heera came out with this song long long ago so does that mean some one was inspired by this song?

Well, most of the numbers on the Bhangra Fever volumes were remixes with the exception of one or two.... I know there was an old album of Heera's called Beat The Rhythm but I don't know what songs were on it, and I'm not sure if it was the same as the 12" vinyl with that same name. Maybe a UK person would know. Heera for me began with Diamonds... There was also a cd released in 2005 called Chakk De Phatte UK No. 1 Bhangra Hits that had this track listed on it but I don't know if it was the original or this version.

I am sure Heera's CD will have this as original version. I know for sure the one I had was not remixed. Back then remixes were not very popular

Not sure if that album made it to CD, it was on Arishma label 1988 I believe. If I ever found out and get it I'll try and remember to share it, may take me another year though, lol.
