Classical vocalist and Thumri queen Shobha Gurtu recently died. One more icon passed away.
Although the sense of loss has an immediacy, the pain felt is spread over time and may be in a decades time, when thumri and tarana will be lost art, if not dead completely (I shudder!) with the demise of such stalwarts, the only solace would be listening to some gems such as the ones I am uploading here...

Here is another one by Shobha Gurtu -- a very enchanting ghazal with commentary by Naushad in the beginning.
Mujhe Deke Mai Mere Saqiya
Meree Tashnagi ko hawa naa dey
This also seems to be an apt moment to mention her the most able legacy in the form of her son Trilok Gurtu who is a well known name on European Jazz Network. Though, not a classical Jazz musician, Trilok, as a percussionist has carved a niche for himself with some very ear-catching fusion music. Remembrance by him comes to the mind instantly which had Shobha Gurtu as vocalist, and Zakir Hussain, Sultan Khan, Ronu Mazumdar on Tabla, Sarangi, and flute respectively.

Its very sad to know that legendary Thumari Queen Shobha Gurtu is not with us.
I am very lucky to hear to this lengdary singer in Sawai Gandharv Sangeet Mahotsav(Pune) last year. She was not well at that time too , but her voice was full of intensity. We will not get any more chance to hear the Queen live but her voice is immortal, no one can fill the gap.

Yaad Piya kee Aaye..Hi Anurag,
This thumari is used by Nana Patekar in his directorial debut "Prahar".
Thanks a lot for uploading other songs, sung by Queen.

Ideally speaking, now some of my uploads in this thread would belong to Raag-Rang but a spatio-temporal distinction would n't make them any less enjoyable. So, here is an excellent thumri by the icon:
Shobha Gurtu - Naiya Padi Majdhar in Thumri Mishra Bhairavi
man, I'd post a couple from remembrances a little later. There are couple on that album that take the cake -- overall, a wonderful fusion experiment by the son and mother duo with support from Zakir Hussain and Sultan Khan.

The thumri has a subtly mesmerizing effect on the listener. At times her style seemed similar to another singer that I got to hear from the Raag Rang section, Sidhheshwari Devi. I was unfortunate not to have heard this beautiful singer's work before this. Thank you Anurag for bringing her to my attention. Its a pity that getting hold of such beautiful treasures isn't as easy as obtaining the latest Anu Malik tune.
Looking forward to downloading the rest of the treats.

Glad to know that you guys enjoyed listening to those...
Here are two pieces from remembrance of Trilok Gurtu -- and both are an excellent introduction to Indian Jazz Fusion. In both of these pieces, he has used his mother's haunting vocals -- my favorite being Expression of Love.
Those of you who are going to listen to these for the first time, I envy you.
