Full Version: The Song Of A Parrot

bibhas
The popular Hindustani Raaga Kirvani/Kirwani has its origins in Carnatic music where it is referred to as Keeravaani (Keera=Parrot, Vaani = speech/song). Lately I have been haunted by this raaga and can't seem to listen to much else. I will upload some of my favorites here and will also request the RR community for gems that they have heard in this raaga.

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan's son, Aashish, excels in this raaga and I particularly like his Kirvani recitals compared to other raagas he plays. I'll start with a jugalbandi between Aashish and Shamim Ahmed playing a teentaal gat composed by Lakshmi Shankar.

One recording I am looking for is a Kirwani dhun by Pt.Brij Bhushan Kabra. Please do upload if you have it.

Bibhas

p.s. Looks like it didn't upload the first time around, so here it is:

Raga Kirvani: Alap, Jor and Gat in Teentaal
Artists: Aashish Khan and Shamim Ahmed, Sarod/Sitar Jugalbandi
Duration: 13:00 @ 160kbps

Here is another lovely Kirvani. Again a Sarod-Sitar jugalbandi featuring Aashish Khan (you can tell he has a thing for Kirvani after listening to the two uploads) and his guru-bhai Indranil Bhattacharya. In this recital, they are playing the traditional Maihar Gat in Vilambit teentaal composed by the late ustad, Baba Allauddin Khan :
Pa Pa Sa-, Ga -Ga-, Ni Sa Pa Dha, Pa, Pa, Pa, Ma Pa Dha-, Ga Ma Pa-, Re Ga Ma-, Ga - Re Sa

Uploading in 3 parts
Raag: Kirvani
Piece: Gat in Vilambit Teentaal followed by a drut teentaal gat
Artists: Aashish Khan and Indranil Bhattacharya
Duration: 31:33 @ 160 kbps
It's an absolute beauty!

May I repeat my request for the Kirvani shun by Pt. Brij Bhushan Kabra?

Hi Anurag, wave1.gif
smile3.gif I am so glad to see you back! A big welcome to you and hope you'll come back more often. This is the second good news I am receiving on HF this week, first Shivani came back and now you. biggrin.gif

How's life? Still in the same place?

Shaibaal is around and active, though he hasn't posted in a couple of weeks. Unni has not resurfaced since he left the forum. I think Hits is busy with his new baby and life in general. Vivek and Shyam haven't been seen for a while. T is very much around and active.

You should come back more often, Raag Rang is not quite what it used to be without you. We have some really good new members now and it'd be great to pick up on some of the discussions again!

Thanks for the grand welcome but I hardly deserve it, for I have been away for so long. You know what they say -- out of sight out of mind. I must have practically disappeared from everyone's memory. biggrin.gif

Good to know that Shivani is back. However, I can not muster enough courage to even say hello to my lovely mate, T.

It seems that there are some new rules regarding music upload and download. When did this happen? Don't we oldies get some initial credit to begin with? Share ratio, OMG!! Is there a neo-geek in-charge here now? Where has the good old-fashioned download-as-much-as-you-can-without-uploading-anything spirit gone? Pradeep, are you listening?

Anyway, here is a kirwani piece from that legend who is no more with us now. Nikhil Banerjee!

But what really tears my heart apart is a rendition of kirwani by Shahid Parvez, that I think everyone should have by now.

Dear cYb0rG

Thanks for pointing out to the guidelines. You see when I used to come here, there was some flexibility in how we did this, so long we did it and were still around to clarify or answer. But I guess there is a good reasons why such measures have been adopted now. With a little discipline, I am sure that this would be an ordered place.

But, mahn, you piqued my curiosity! who are you? Is that you Pradeep, in a new avatar? biggrin.gif

Anurag,
You most certainly deserve one, for those who have interacted with you know how special you are. And for that reason, you can never be out of mind even if you're outta sight!

Yes, HF has changed significantly since you last used to visit and even though the new rules are tedious and sometimes make HF feel like grade school, I think HF could certainly use the newfound discipline that CyBorg is enforcing rather admirably. Look what the lack of it did it to HF, we've lost many extremely valued and beloved members inlcuding the founders of HF and the entire former admin team of Unni, Pradeep, Nimmi, Chitralekha and BJ.

Thanks for Nikhilda's Kirwani. Didn't download 'cos I already have it. I haven't heard Shahid's Kirwani though and would love it if you could upload. Also, any chance you have Brij Bhushan Kabra's Kirwani?

Anurag, I have to agree with B here.... However, you have got to turn up a bit more frequently and enrich the place. There are quite a few newer members who are diggajs and aap aa jaao tau we will be able to get the 'Rang' back in the 'Raag'!

I had the pleasure of attending Shahidji's concert on the 27th - he too never disappoints. He did not play Kirwani this time. I am however uploading a piece from a live concert in Edmonton. It is a short piece - but has the "chaashni" of the raga. Absolutely delightful.

On a tangent, at this other concert I attended, Shahidji started with Yaman Kalyan. After intermission he did not announce any raga names (he is such a modest man and someone that would prefer to let his music do the talking) and started off with Shahana. Then he started playing a drut gat in Ektaal in what sounded like Megh to me. He however did add some phrases that threw me off (does not take much to do that biggrin.gif ) but it sounded largely Megh-ish (to me) and ended the concert with Piloo.

Anyway, after the concert I got a hold of him and asked him specifically about this piece. He said it was Megh Malhar. 'Megh aur Megh Malhar mein fark hai jab ki kuchh log kehte hain ki same hai.' I never had a chance to get into the specifics of the 'fark' but maybe it could be the topic of a new thread and the gunijans here could once again enlighten ham jaison ko jo andhere mein baithe hain...

Dear Gopi and Shaibaal

Thank you for the warm welcome and the kind words. Although, I know that I do not deserve any of it.

Gopi, I have uploaded Enayetkhani kanada by VK in the other thread. Unfortunately, I do not have Brij bhushan Kabra's kirwani dhun. sad1.gif I had searched through in my collection.

Shaibaal, I saw Shahid Parvez playing some time ago here in NY and after the concert had a chance to talk to him and also had a picture taken with him. I told him personally how I felt hearing his kirwani. He just smiled at me. The man is so modest and warm hearted.

I am surprised as to how Pradeep could leave his baby and what about Nimii; Was n't this a place that they created? The whole admin team gone!!! where are they now? Can't believe that those kind folks have stopped sharing their music, knowledge, and friendship.

In any case, here is that kirwani by Shahid Parvez. He, truly makes his sitar weep.

Shaibaal,
Most people sing Megh and Megh Malhar as the same raag but I have heard differences between the two. I think the essential difference lies in the heavy reliance of Megh on the rishabh and ReMa congruence while Megh Malhar exploits the MaRePa sangati and weaves it into the structure of Megh. Vaadi swar for Megh is Sa while it is Ma for Megh Malhar.

Rajan Parrikar's article on Sarang (http://www.sawf.org/newedit/edit10302000/musicarts.asp) also has a discourse (by Pt. Ramrang) on the differences between Megh and Madhmad Sarang and in the same audio file, he also talks about the differences between Megh and Megh Malhar. Here it is:

Thank you so much! I knew gunijan like you would come through. I am likely to get a recording of the particular concert and need to listen carefully. Can you think of any recordings of Megh Malhar offhand that I could refer to?

I am uploading the same gat that Shahidji played in your recording but by Shivji. I think this is actually is gat, or at least the one he plays most often.
