Lata Mangeshkar

The Nightingale speaks
Many wonder if anything more can be written about Lata Mangeshkar, the Nightingale of India. Hasn't everything about her already been written? We don't agree; now and then, the diva helps us discover some hidden nuggets about her life and makes news all over again. For instance, did you know that she, too, feels that she has missed out on some areas in music? Read on…

Lata Mangeshkar - age does not wither her voice nor do her fans tire of hearing her songs. She sang for some of the young Bollywood queens; they have long since aged but Mangeshkar still sings for today's young heroines. You can't shop for Hindi film songs without seeing her face at least on a dozen different CD or cassette covers.

Lata has lived a full life with the kind of opportunities that few have got. However, she still feels that she has missed out on certain things - one being that she could not pursue a full time career as a classical singer. Having studied classical music from the age of five, the undisputed queen of Bollywood playback singers says that she regrets that she was not able to follow her true calling and only love in live - that of a career in classical music.

The veteran singer recently shared this after recording a song for a Gujarati film - Dukhiya Na Beli-Bapa Sita Ram. Incidentally, the song was Mahatma Gandhi's much-loved bhajan Vaishnav Jan. She decided to sing in Gujarati since she has not sung in that language for 25 years. Being at the top for decades can get lonely, she agrees. Who isn't lonely she questions. In fact, people who think they are not will find that they are lonely too - if only they take the time to introspect and look within themselves. Being surrounded by people does not necessarily mean that you do not feel lonely, she concludes philosophically.

What about her film career? The offers have not stopped coming in after all these years. The singer jokes that she has stopped singing for films since there are so many remixes of her songs. And does she approve of remixes? The answer is an categorical no but people do seem to like them, she says.

Did you know that Mangeshkar has sung in Dutch, Russian and Swahili? No? See, we told you there were facts about her that you would continue to discover.
