Thanks for all these songs of Surinder kaur, Parkash Kaur, and others.Tussin tey eh gaaniaan da khazana he saadey saarian lai lia ditta eh.Bahut shukarguzaar haan, per naal ek hore gaana yaad aa riha eh jo ehna (at least) tin (3) bhainaan nein gaaya see. Their sister Mohinder Kaur had also joined them in the song 'Paani aaya pullan dey haith mahiya, mahina jeth mahiya... ponchi banwaaniaan tey wich heerey wey jadaaniaan, oh wee na aaye merey metch maahiya...' If you have it I would like to listen to it. Last time I heard this song was sometimes in the 60's on All India Radio's Shortwave Foreign Service. By the way you don't have to individually explain every little mistake or oversight. I am so happy to get all these songs from your HF posts that these tiny little mistakes etc. do not matter at all.Harjinder

I am not contradicting you but simply very much surprised
to read this. Atleast one 78 was issued of her two solos which
I am looking for since 60s:
1. na chunni le surmayi kude, toon laggen badali jiyi kude
2. peete booriyaan majhaan de Doke, te jaTTi aan men khumb vargi

These two and Paani aayaa pulaan de haith, used to be aired by AIR
Jallandhar... in the good old days...

Dewaani no...mohinder kaur bhamra is not the same singer. She is famous
for her song "Gida paayo haan diyo" released some time during 70s.

Urzungji what I wanted to ask was when exactly this 78 rpm was issued.
During 55-60?

Dewaani and all other punjabis..the song...tu chunni lai surmayi kude..mentioned
by Urzungji has this tune.

I would say that it came out between 1957 and 1958. I heard these songs first
time towards second half of 1957 or early 1958. I am not saying that they must
have come from the same records... have not seen the record... each may be from
a different one and that means two records. I do not remember having heard any
other song by her... excluding ' paani aayaa pulaan' if she is there in it.
The words of Chunni songs had these:
na chunni le surmayi kude toon laggen badali jayi kude
kyon waalaan noon sarkaani ain
kyon raat haneri paani ain
teri uThadi payi jawaani ain
kite aiven na dig payin kude
na chunni ............................

I don't have any definite source of information about Mohinder Kaur being their sister but over the years in informal conversations she was referred by some people to be just that. I think, in some obituaries after Surinder kaur's death also Mohinder Kaur was mentioned to be her sister. Later there was another singer Mohinderjit Kaur Sekhon who was younger and was a radio artist at Jalandhar radio station. She also sang some duets wit Lal Chand 'Yamla Jat' ( Mohinderrjit Kaur Sekhon did).To my not so well trained ear Mohinder Kaur's voice sounded quite a bit like Parkash Kaur's.I will keep your querry in mind and will try to see if I can find some facts related to these singers.Mohinder Kaur was mentioned by the announcer at AIR ( when I heard the song ' Paani ayya pullan de haith...' on their Foreign Service) to be one of the singers. I had a query, someone recently requested Madhaniya, Haye Ve Mere Daadiya Rabba Ve but my version for Surinder Kaur's was only 3:04 min long and did not have the requested lines...Chhudiyan....... Saure Ghar Jaan Waliye, Teriyan Hon Muraadan Puriyan, yet I seem to remember it in her voice. Does anyone know if there is a longer version out there?

And in a related query, I've been looking for the original singer for a version that was featured in the US TV Sci Fi Show Firefly, they just had about 50 seconds of it and that was a nice voice too. (It's not the Punjab version on Karunesh's Global Spirit and also it is not the one by Priya Chopra which I have but have no clue which album it belongs to). Just now I came across an article on Surinder Kaur on APNA website.It is from a book written in Punjabi ( Shahmukhi or Persian script) 'Suran De Saudagar' by Iqbal Mahal In the article on page 7, last line, he mentions that Surinder Kaur had four sisters. I saw the names Parkash Kaur,Mohinder Kaur, Manjit Kaur, and Narinder Kaur. Hopefully this article has the piece of informatinon to clear their relationship of being sisters Harjinder
