Full Version: Songs Of Kazi Nazrul Islam
Hamara Forums > Music > Regional Music > Bengali

I thought I would begin by writing a bit about the man - but there is so much information out there on the web about Kazi Nazrul Islam that I would probably do a pretty bad job if I tried anything original. One of the many sites is http://www.nazrul.org and I would recommend a visit.

What initially attracted me to Nazrul Geeti was really the raga based compositions but I could later appreciate the incredible versatility of this genius. Most of my collection is from old tapes and only a few artistes I am afraid.

My own earliest memories are those of this song. Even though I was a child, I remember how Manabendra Mukherjee's voice and incredible gayaki grabbed me - and still does to this day. He reminds us of the kind of 'tayyari' you need to be able to even attempt to sing something like this. The song is largely based on Raga Bihag.

Song : Bhoriya Poraan Shuniteychhi Gaan, 3:13 @ 160 kbps
Singer : Manabendra Mukherjee

In his heydays as a singer, S D Burman recorded a whole bunch of songs by Nazrul - I have a tape somewhere that I just don't seem to be able to locate sad.gif !

The immensely popular signature tune for Raga Ahir Bhairav - "poochho na kaise maine rain bitaayi" is believed to have been heavily inspired from this song - although I don't believe S D recorded this in his own voice. While Manna Dey's rendition of the hindi song is considered a benchmark, this version is something else....

Singer: Manabendra Mukherjee, 2:58, 160 kbps
Song: Arunkanti ke go jogi bhikhaari

Now this next one was definitely recorded by S D in bangla. Someone kindly uploaded one of the songs of the unreleased Gulzar-RD film Devdas on HF sometime ago and it was the same song in Lataji's voice.... even the lyrics of the first line are the same. smile.gif

Singer: Manabendra Mukherjee, 3:17, 160 kbps
Song: Kuhu Kuhu Kuhu Kuhu Koyeliya

Shaibaal thank you for initiating this thread... and thanks for the site... am still reading...

Arunkanti ke go jogi bhikhaari... how beautiful... yes even I could make out the strains of "Poocho Na Kaise"

A suggestion, if you could give a brief description of what the song expresses(not a detailed one) it would help the non-Bangla speaking population who tentatively might step in here, to enjoy them... smile1.gif

Have not gone to the Kuhu Kuhu song yet... the Lata one... am waiting to savor the similarities and differences...

It is indeed. Since you asked, this is a song that Radha sings. She is asking the Lord to show himself to her in the only 'roop' she knows and loves - that of Lord Krishna. She is merely an 'Ahirini' and cannot handle the dazzling 'jyoti' and overpowering beauty of the Lord - she wants the 'bansuri waala'.

This was unfortunately a pretty pathetic attempt at explaining the sheer beauty of the poetry - as will be the others, I am afraid.... sad.gif

'Bhoriya poraan' is a song of anticipation as he waits for his 'preetam'. The lyrics describe his imagination as he ponders the route she will take, what she will look like, etc. Also he notices how beautiful everything in nature now looks as it awaits 'her' arrival.

Kuhu Kuhu is also a love song. The 'nayak' wakes up startled to the voice of a kokil and wonders why it cried out in the darkness only to find that he is alone and his beloved has crept away leaving her footmarks on the trampled 'kusums', etc. I am really not very good at this.. wacko.gif

Raga Piloo is a very romantic and endearing raga with a very earthy and folksy feel. It has many, many shades from the playful, one of sweet sadness, wistfulness, and so on..

Here are four songs, all based on raga piloo but each very distinct and different from the other and each bringing out a completely different 'rang'. I do believe Nazrul was just an incredible composer - to be able to bring out the subtle nuances of each raga and its many moods.

Chaliye aapli farmaish bhi poori kar dete hain.

1. Song: Sheyi meethey surey, 5:56, 128 kbps

The song really has a very "meetha sur" - one of his first recordings I believe.

2. Song: Sreejono chhondey, 5:14, 128 kbps

This is an invocation to Lord Shiva! It has always amazed me that Nazrul wrote some of the finest songs about Radha-Krishna, Durga and a whole bunch of Shyama Sangeet (songs about the Goddess Kali) and these are of the highest calibre. As we would say in bangla - "aushadharon lok"!

3. Song: Rumjhum rumujhum ke bajaaye, 4:15, 128 kbps

I do believe I had uploaded this song earlier on Raag Rang - there was some discussion about the Raga on which this song is based - Raga Nirjharini - and it is one of Kazi Nazrul's own creations. The raga does have shades that remind me of "meghla nishi bhorey".

Shaibaal am enjoying all the songs, piece by piece... a treat indeed... For some reason don't find myself way out of my depth... (only just a little bit! tongue1.gif )

Was listening to the Sreejono Chhondey song... it is superb... In what context did KNI(forgive me for the heresy of shortening the name) compose these devotional songs...? Very evocative lyrics...

Rumjhum rumjhum is beautiful... it also reminded me of the "Main albeli"(SDB:Buzdil) track...

It is indeed one of my favorites. KNI also very often mentioned the raga of the song as part of the lyrics. In this case, the first antara has the word 'nirjharini' in the first line.

Here is another one sung by Ramanuj Dasgupta. It is a different genre - also referred to as 'majlisi' or the kind of song you would sing in a mehfil or a baithak.

Song: Aajke na hoye ekti kotha, 7:52, 128 kbps

By the way, I did post a response about the Ashaji interview but it got lost! sad.gif I will try and muster up some enthusiasm to rewrite tomorrow.

Two more songs by Ramanujda before I switch to other artistes - at least for a while.

I love this song - and the raga too - Rageshree. Beautiful lyrics and composition. 5:10, 128 kbps

I also adore this next song based on Raga Malgunji - very similar to Rageshree and yet quite different. I have heard Ramanujda sing this much much better in a live performance but nevertheless this is the only recording I have - so here goes. 5:04, 128 kbps

Was reading up on KNI's life on the Wiki and came upon some info that answered my question... Very sweepingly...in the twenties his work was more oriented towards the freedom movement and social themes. He married Promila Devi in 1924 a brahma samaji lady and their marriage attracted a great deal of criticism from both the Muslim and Hindu factions. Following the death of his mother(1928) and two elder sons... his poetry became more exploratory...moving into religious themes. He wrote many Islamic devotional songs bringing them into mainstream Bengali folk music and ventured also into Hindu devotional music composing bhajans and kirtans often merging Islamic and Hindu values...

Here is a quote from the Wiki
Nazrul is considered to have been one of the most brilliant exponents of Shaktism, a form of Hinduism widely practised in Bengal and Assam.[8] Nazrul's poetry imbibed the passion and creativity of Shakti, which is identified as the Brahman, the personification of primordial energy. He wrote and composed many bhajans, shyamasangeet, agamanis and kirtans. He also composed large number of songs on invocation to Lord Shiva, Goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati and on the theme of love of Radha and Krishna.[4] For many contemporary critics, Nazrul's works also reflect the universalism of the teachings of sages Kabir and Guru Nanak as well as the syncretism of Mughal emperor Akbar's Din-i-Illahi school.[8]

What a fascinating career... amazing how prolific he was in the initial twenty years and how unfortunate that for the next thirty years, dogged by his mental illness he remained silent...

Does anyone have the AABRITI of Nazrul Sahab?

I have "bolo beer aami unnito momosheer" but i am looking for better quality AABRITIs.

Thanks in anticipation.

Great !!! Thanks for creating the thread. aapne to hume treat hee de diyaa. gaana download karne
ko mile to treat dugnaa ho jaayegaa. biggrin.gif

kazi was religious because of his love and devotion but at the same time secular. other then literature
his contribution to social issues and underprivileged ones is amazing. in my area, people celebrate his
bday and worship him.

can anybody upload the nazrul geeti "aar lukaabi kothaa maakaali"(shyamaa sangeet) ? whenever i listen to this
song i feel "the goddess must appear. she can't help coming if somebody sings with such a devotion."

p.s. if ratio doesn't permit me to download then guys will u please email me the songs ? bow.gif

shaibaal, did anup jalota happen to sing the song "arun kaanti ke go" ? i don't remember if i listened to
manabendra mukherjee or anup jalota. if yes, please upload that too.
shaibaal
Great to see you both - Humbleji and Natureji here.

Humbleji, if you go the website I have given in the first post, go to Audio and there are quite a few recitations provided there.

Natureji, I am not too sure if I have the song you mention. I will keep looking. Any idea who has sung it? I have heard Anup Jalota's version too but do not have a copy. I have this thing about all these 'other' versions. But it is probably just me.

Let me start with Rafisaab's rendition of 'brojo gopi khely hori' - 3:55, 128 kbps. The entire album was very popular but does nothing for me. To my mind it has only the novelty of listening to Rafi sahab singing in bangla and nothing more since I have heard much better versions. And I don't blame him either. It is difficult to breathe emotion and life into lyrics you are barely managing to pronounce!

Having said that Lataji and Ashaji are two of the most prolific singers of bangla songs and they managed very well. I guess they managed to learn a bit more of the language - even if it was because of their insecurities! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

All the tracks that follow are by about 2.5 to 3 minutes long at 128 kbps. Most of the recordings are 60 to 70 years old and make up for all the lack of technology of the time with the sheer emotion in their renditions. All of these are very iconic figures of their time and you may know some of them. Jogonmoy Mitra was known as Sursagar Jagmohan ('dil dekar dard liya, maine maine maine'), Miss Indubala was very well known as a classical singer (she also recorded one of the earliest versions of Mohe panghat pe nandlal chhed gayo re) to mention just two of them.

Hope you like these.

A very well written piece on the life of Kazi Nazrul Islam -

Nazrul: An ardent lover of humanity
Mohammad Shafiqul Islam

Nazrul once said, "Even though I was born in this country (Bengal), in
this society, I don't belong to just this locale. I belong to the world". He
may be considered a pioneer in the post-Tagore scene. He was by nature and
conviction a people's poet. His work, full of vitality, brought a new note
of robust optimism in Bengali literature.

Nazrul was keenly sensitive to the ongoing social injustice. His songs
and poems are full of hope for the exploited and oppressed. He advocated the
ideal of equality in a very vigorous manner. His works honestly represent
the life he led -- his struggles with poverty, his intense patriotism, and
bohemian life. The 'rebel poet' was crowned in 1972 as the National Poet of
Bangladesh.

Nazrul made his mark as a revolutionary poet through poems such as
Bidrohi (Rebel) and Bhangar Gan (The Song of Destruction). Nazrul's writings
explored themes such as love, freedom, and revolution; he opposed all forms
of prejudice, particularly fundamentalism and gender discrimination. The
patriotic stance expressed in his publications like the Dhumketu (Comet),
got him incarcerated, but even there he wrote fiery pieces such as Rajbandir
Jabanbandi (Deposition of a Political Prisoner). He is best known for his
songs, in which he pioneered new forms such as Bengali ghazals. Nazrul wrote
and composed nearly 3000 songs, which constitute the body known as Nazrul
Sangeet.

Nicknamed 'Dukhu Miah', Nazrul began attending the maktab, where he
studied the Quran and other scriptures, Islamic philosophy and theology.
After the sudden death of his father in 1908, at the age of ten, Nazrul had
to start working to support his family. He later became the muezzem at the
local mosque, leading the community prayers.

Unable to continue paying fees, Nazrul left his school and joined a
group of kabiyals. Eventually he took up a job at a bakery and tea stall in
the town of Asansol. In 1914, Nazrul joined the Darirampur School in
Trishal, Mymensingh District. He spent several years there. Amongst other
subjects, Nazrul studied Bengali, Sanskrit, Arabic, Farsi literature and
classical music under teachers who were impressed by his dedication and
skills.

Nazrul read extensively and was deeply influenced by Rabindranath
Tagore and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, as well as the Persian poet Hafiz.
His first prose work, Baunduler Atmakahini (Life of a Vagabond) was
published in May, 1919. His poem Mukti (Freedom) was published by the Bangla
Musalmaan Shahitya Potrika (Bengali Muslim Literary Journal) in July 1919.

Settling in Kolkata in 1920, Nazrul joined the staff of the Bangiya
Musalmaan Shahitya Samiti (Bengali Muslim Literary Society). He published
his first novel Bandhanhara (Liberated) in 1920. The initial works received
critical acclaim, giving the young poet his first taste of fame.

In October 1921, Nazrul went to Shantiniketan with Muhammad
Shahidullah and met Rabindranath Tagore. Despite many differences, Nazrul
looked up to Tagore as a mentor and the two remained in close association.
In 1921, Nazrul got engaged to Nargis, niece of a well-known Muslim
publisher Ali Akbar Khan, in Daulatpur, Comilla. But on June 18, 1921, the
day of the wedding, Nazrul suddenly left without any explanation.

Nazrul catapulted to fame with the publication of Bidrohi in 1922,
which remains his most famous work. At the time of publication, no other
poem since Tagore's Shonar Tori had met with such spontaneous acclaim and
criticism for the radical approach. Set in a heroic meter, the verse invokes
images from Hindu, Muslim and Greek mythology.

Published in the Bijli magazine, the poem caused a popular sensation.
Nazrul stormed into Tagore's residence, jokingly declaring, "Gurudeb, I have
come to finish you off". The rebellious language and theme found resonance
with public consciousness of the time. Nazrul explores a synthesis of
different forces in a rebel, destroyer and preserver, expressing rage as
well as beauty and sensitivity. Nazrul followed up, and his first anthology
of poems, Agnibeena in 1922, which enjoyed astounding and far-reaching
success. He also published his first volume of short stories, the Byathar
Dan (Gift of Sorrows) and Yugbani, an anthology of essays.

A political poem published in Dhumketu in September 1922 led to a
police raid on the magazine's office. Arrested, Nazrul entered a lengthy
plea before the judge in the court.

On April 14, 1923 he was transferred from the jail in Alipur to
Hooghly in Kolkata. He began fasting to protest mistreatment by the British
jail superintendent. Nazrul broke his fast more than a month later and was
eventually released from prison in December 1923. Nazrul composed a large
number of poems and songs during his imprisonment and many of his works were
banned in the 1920s by the British authorities. The poet became a critic of
the Khilafat struggle, condemning it as a hollow, fundamentalist movement.
His stance earned him the fury of thousands of conservative Muslims.

It was during his visit to Comilla in 1921, when Nazrul met a young
Hindu woman, Pramila Debi. They married on April 25, 1924. Pramila belonged
to the Brahmo Samaj, which criticised her marriage to a Muslim. Nazrul in
turn was condemned by Muslim religious leaders and continued to face
criticism for his personal life and literary work.

Nazrul professed faith in the absolute gender equality, a view his
contemporaries considered revolutionary. In his poem Nari (Women), Nazrul
repudiates what he sees as the long-standing oppression of women,
proclaiming their rights. He stunned the society with his poem Barangana
(Prostitute), in which he addresses a prostitute as 'mother'. Nazrul
explored woman's emotions eloquently in many of his popular songs like Mor
Ghumoghore Elay Monohor.

Nazrul was shaken by the death of Rabindranath Tagore on August 8,
1941. He spontaneously composed two poems dedicated to Tagore's memory, one
of which was Rabihara. Within months, Nazrul's physical condition worsened
and he gradually began losing his ability to speak. His behaviour became
erratic and spending recklessly, he found himself in financial difficulties.
He became embittered by the sudden loss of his active life.

He was living a reclusive life with no care in a shabby, over-crowded
cottage in Calcutta. West Bengal government did not even arrange a bed in
any recuperative home for the poet who was suffering from irreversible brain
damage. On June 30, 1962 his wife Pramila died. Nazrul remained in intensive
medical care. He soon succumbed to his long-standing ailments on August 29,
1976. In accordance with a wish he had expressed in one of his poems, he was
buried next a mosque on Dhaka University campus.

Nazrul remains a symbol of youth, valour, creativity, liberation and
indomitable human spirit, and most importantly, an ardent lover of humanity.

The author is a lecturer at Department of English, Metropolitan University, Sylhet.

Shaibaal,

Thanks to you, I am rushing in where ummm... stalwarts take care to tread.... Just heard the Ajay Chakraborty songs, and they are absolutely gorgeous, even to my untrained ear. Loved the atmospheric "Shunyo e Bukey" ... I am grateful enought to you for uploading such gems but am going to ask for a further favor, please please do give a brief description of the song and singer ... also, whenever you can, if you could place it in KNI's ouvre. Just read up on AC too, what a lovely voice, in "Uchatton mono" he renders "piya" so evocatively. Thank you for your wonderful thread.

The intro to KNI, as I said before, is succint and has a lot of information packed in it and for a beginner like me was a very useful starting point.

Kamon aacho ??

I have been downloading the songs from your thread for a while now -- and I should be saying this more often -- mahn these songs are awesome!!! And Mommy says the same.

Pt.Ajoy reminds me ... he had come to Kuwait for a concert when I was there. Maybe I was in 10th or 11th std or so - and that time, I was no where close to Indian music. My Mom had seen his show that time (I had no idea that time).

Anyways -- so then on my way to Toronto for the first time, we (my family) met him at Calcutta airport - he was also on his way to Toronto. So then he stood beside me (Goodness he is so tall!!). And then he asked me "Is this the British Airways counter line?". I had no idea (that moment) who it was (not that it would have made any difference) -- but I said "I don't know." I am not sure why I even said that -- I mean I knew it was the BA line; I was standing right there!. So then he walked away.

Then Mom saw that and then said "Ai chele -- tui janish tui kaake Na bolli?" (translation: boy - do u even know whom U said no to?). I said Nope. She said that's Pt.Ajoy Chakraborty. I asked "Who?". She said something like Michael Jackson has ruined you and what not.

Then we had this long 6-7 hrs transit at London. There I again saw him walking past the Duty Free shops alone. So then I went upto him and said that I didn't realize at that time he was who he was and that I was sorry since that indeed was the BA line. He said that's all fine. And then I asked for his autograph - which he so gladly gave. And then he came and talked to my parents as well -- and they were talking about the concert in Kuwait, etc.

Ok - that's it -- there is more to it -- but I am bored typing, as you must be bored reading.

The point is -- thanks a lot for these songs biggrin.gif

Raga Piloo is a very romantic and endearing raga with a very earthy and folksy feel. It has many, many shades from the playful, one of sweet sadness, wistfulness, and so on..

Here are four songs, all based on raga piloo but each very distinct and different from the other and each bringing out a completely different 'rang'. I do believe Nazrul was just an incredible composer - to be able to bring out the subtle nuances of each raga and its many moods.

Shaibaal,
I was listening to Mousumi's Poraan Priyo yesterday morning and a couple of dozen light bulbs went off in my head. Suddenly, I understood what Piloo was all about! Finally! After that, I have to agree with you about the similarities with Kirwani (never mind what I said before on that topic); the treatment of the komal dhaivat in Pilu is rather tricky and one has to pay very careful attention not to step into Kirwani territory.

I missed on many wonderful gems you uploaded on this thread including the Piloos above. Could you kindly reupload these (except Poraan Piyo) as well as "Shunyo e Bukey" and "Uchatton mono"? I know I am asking for a lot, so please take your time.

This song is actually like a thumri of the purabi ang, very playful and a remarkable rendition.

Shaibaal,
I was listening to Mousumi's Poraan Priyo yesterday morning and a couple of dozen light bulbs went off in my head.

Could you kindly reupload these (except Poraan Piyo) as well as "Arun Kaanti Ke Go", "Shunyo e Bukey" and "Uchatton mono"? I know I am asking for a lot, so please take your time.

Shaibaal,
Thank you very much for these gems. Even though "Uchaton" has a lovely folk flavor, I liked "Shunno" very much. Set in GaurMalhar, the way Ajoyji sang it reminded me of Rafi sahab's "Mai Yeh Sochkar uske dar se".

Bibhas,

I am producing below the lyrics that are available with me. The transliteration is neither consistent nor accurate to the extent that I have sometimes spelt it the way it is pronounced and sometimes not! See if this works for you. The only song I do not have lyrics for in the book that we posses is "adoro goro goro". Sunke phir post karoonga.

Hope to hear these songs in your own voice soon!

Poraan priyo, keno ele abelaye
Sheetolo himelo baaye phool jhorey jaaye
keno ele abelaye...

Shedino shokaal bela, khelechhi kusum o khela
Aaji je kaandi ekela, e bhanga melaye
keno ele....

Klaanto dibosho doorey, kaandichhey Piloo'r shurey
Keno shoto potho ghoorey, aashiley hethaye
keno....

Rumjhum jhum rumjhum ke baajaaye, jalo jhumjhumi
Chomokiya jaage ghoomonto bono bhoomi

Duronto aranya giri 'nirjharini', rongey shongey loye bone'r horini
Shakhaye shakhaye ghoom bhangaye, bhiru mukule'r kopol choomi

Kuhu kuhu kuhorey pahari kuhu, piyaal daaley pollobo beena bajaye
Jhiri jhiri shomiron taari taaley taaley
Sheyi jol chhol chhol surey jaagiya sharaa deye bono paarey baanshi rakhaliya
Polli'r prantor uthe shihori, boley chonchola ke go tumi

Sheyi meethey shurey maather baanshori baajey
Nijhum nishitey byathito buke'r maajhe

Money porey jaaye shohosha kokhon
Jal bhoraa dooti dagoro noyon
Peeth bhora chool, sheyi champa phool
Pheley chhootey jaawa laajey

Harano sheye din paabo na go aar phirey
Dekhitey paabo na aar sheyi kishori re
Tobu maajhey maajhey asha jaage keno
Aami bhuliyaachhi bholey ni sheye jeno

Gomti'r teerey paata'r kutirey
Aajo potho chaahe shaanjhey

Arunkanti ke go jogi bhikhari
Neerabey heshey daandayiley eshe
Prokhoro tejo tobo neharitey naari

Raashobilaashini aami aahirini
Shyamolo kishoro rupo shudhu chini
Ambarey heri aaj, eki jyoti punjo
Hey Girijapati, kothaa Giridhaari

Shomboro shomboro mahima tobo
Hey Brojeshbhairav, aami brojobaala
Hey Shivoshundoro, baaghchhal porihoro
Dhoro Notoboro besh, poro nipo maala

Naba megho chandaney, dhaaki anga jyoti
Priyo hoye dekha daao tribhubano pati
Parbati nohi aami, aami srimati
Bishaano pheliyaa howo baanshori dhaari

Sreejono chhondey, anondey naacho Nataraj,
Hey mahakaal, proloy taal, bholo bholo

Chhodaak taba jatilo jata
Shishu shoshi'r kiron chhata
Uma'rey bukey dhoriya shukhey
Dolo, dolo

Mondo srotaa Mandakini
Shuradhwani tarangey
Shongit jagao hey taba
Nritya bibhongey

Dhutura phool khuliya pheli
Jata'tey poro chompabeli
Shoshaney naba jibon
Shiv jaagiyey tolo
(Kheyali kobi nabin baani
Bolo bolo) - the last two lines are a bit confusing - in brackets is what has been sung, the earlier lines are what are printed in the book I have.

Shaibaal,
Kis munh se aapka shukriya ada karoon? Osonkkho dhanyabaad!

Madhavi - At a small "Poila Baisakh" gathering, I sang a couple of bangla songs that were received rather well, so I am trying to expand my repertoire......

Shaibaal,
What is the name of the book you have that has the lyrics of Nazrul Geeti?

Here is what I could decipher for Adoro Goro Goro from the song. Would you please correct it? I am sure there are a ton of mistakes.

aadoro goro goro, baadoro doro doro
ke tonu Doro Doro, kaanpichhey thoro thoro
noyono Dholo Dholo, kaajolo kaalo jolo
jhorelo jhoro jhoro, kaanpichey thoro thoro

byakulo bonoraji shoshichey khone khone
shojoni mono jaanchi ghumure mone mone
bidore hiyamomo bideshe priyotomo
e jonu paakhi shomo porisha joro joro
aadoro......

Thanks for taking the time for this. I know you're extremely busy currently, so please take your time. Timepass cheez jab time ho tabhi......
