THE RISING takes off!

Eventually THE RISING took off not long before the prince had arrived. Ironically the heir to the British throne Prince of Wales has graced India's first Sepoy mutiny's mahurat. There were many film personalities attending on this eve. Luminaries included Yash Chopra, A.R Rehman, Javed Akhtar and many others. Though Aamir Khan presided the show, the event proved a bit off color due to the absence of Aishwarya Rai and Rani Mukherjee coming bit late.

Aishwarya couldn't make to the mahurat of THE RISING since she was relatively busy shooting in Khandala for KHAKEE. Aishwarya is a professional actress first thought she might have some regrets of not meeting Prince personally. Rani Mukherjee who arrived late brushed of rumours that she was slated to Ash's role in the movie. Rani decided not to divulge any details of her role in the movie.

Aamir who gave the mahurat shot was elated to see his dad Tahir Hussain and kid Junaid present there. He also gave Prince Charles some insights of THE RISING. Prince Charles reportedly enquired about the movie for 15 minutes. Maybe he wanted to test how much the unit knew about the Sepoy mutiny.

THE RISING also has Toby Stephens, a popular star of James Bond last flick DIE ANOTHER DAY. Toby earned accolades for portraying a diamond magnate Gustavo Graves, who is at the same time megalomaniac. The fencing sequences with Pierce Bronson has made Toby someone to watch out for in THE RISING.

Toby plays the role of captain William Gordon in THE RISING, who develops serious friendship with an Indian Sepoy Mangal Pandey. The strong bond of friendship goes some torrid times but they held head high. Their friendship is challenged by the coming of a European lady Emily Kent and later by introduction of Enfield Rifles.

Both Gordon and Mangal Pandey like Emily and this is where the problem starts. Enfield Rifles are actually greased with the fatty substance of a cow. Now, when the Indian soldiers use the trigger they put their mouth in it. This caused a concern among the vegetarian soldiers and thus a revolt sparked off under Mangal's hegemony.

Then there is the chapter of Jwala (played by Aishwarya Rai) who was rescued from Sati Pratha (wife being burnt along with her dead husband). The situation gets complicated when Gordon rescued Jwala and Mangal too is involved in it. The movie is basically speaking about the human beings- feelings and relationships. It's not a sarcastic comment on the British rule and any antipathy towards it should not be in mind when one would go to watch the movie.

Rani Mukherjee is doing the movie as she wanted to be a part in the period drama and wanted to work with director Ketan Mehta. Aamir Khan was always the obvious choice for the role of Mangal Pandey. Quite interesting Aamir being a truly professional the audience will be able to see him in a new get up.

However Aamir brushed off any rumours of him turning into a vegetarian. However, keeping such dense moustaches has backfired. Aamir these days is very cautious when he takes his food lest the moustaches get into his mouth. Also his long hair is proving a bar to him for washing. Aamir's get up is totally imaginary as there are no pictures, portraits or paintings of Mangal Pandey.

So what made Aamir chose to act as Mangal Pandey? Aamir found Mangal Pandey to be a different character. He is unsure and confused about his plans and at the same time develops the courage to defy the empire. After LAGAAN and DIL CHAHTA HAI this is the movie that actually inspired Aamir. A true professional, Aamir learns from every new experience and treats every film to be special.

Toby Stephens who gets to work alongside Aamir is elated at this prospect. Toby became an Aamir fan after watching LAGAAN and hence barring all aspects of cultural and geographical differences has agreed to work in Ketan Mehta's movie. He described the experience to be simply scintillating.

While his last patriotic flick lost to NO MAN'S LAND in Oscars, Aamir is confident of making this time to Oscars with THE RISING. THE RISING definitely promises high with its excellent starcast and won't be surprised if it lives upto expectation or beyond that.

A hot smooch in The Rising?
By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 16th, 2004 - 1300 hrs IST

The Aamir Khan starrer The Rising is facing problems again. And now the trouble comes from the real life descendants of Mangal Pandey, the central character of The Rising.

According to a report in a leading daily, Raghunath Pandey, Yadunath Pandey and Hoda Pandey (who claim to be the heirs of the martyr Mangal Pandey) are not very happy with director Ketan Mehta as they are totally unaware of the script of the film and it would be sad if the director misrepresented things in the film and diverted from facts. They strongly feel that the director should have consulted them before making the film.

Also the film reportedly has a kissing scene to which a group called the Mangal Pandey Memorial Committee has strongly objected. They claim to sue the filmmakers if such a scene in shown in the film. Their other grouse is that the film is not being shot in Nagwa, the actual habitat of Mangal Pandey.

Meanwhile Aamir Khan has completed shooting for the film and the movie is expected for release in the first quarter of next year.
