Yes what a song... Jeetendra redeemed himself in Gulzar's movies...two of the great Gulzar on-the-move songs have been picturized on him... Musafir hoon yaaron and O Maanjhi Re. The third is the one picturized on Sanjeev in Namkeen "Raah pe chalte hain" not as popular but... wub.gif

Have not seen the movie in a long time... instead let me mention some of the scenes that stuck in my memory...

Sanjeev Kumar is uncomfortably perched on the bed and the two younger sisters are standing near the doorway just staring at him... he gets up to change the bulb that does not work, asks them to get him a stool which they obligingly do, then get him a knife(!!!) to fix the switch when he realises that the bulb is all right and finally tell him that they have not had electricity for years and then run away giggling...

Sanjeev is annoyed at the ramshackle room he has got and complains to the the guy who negotiated for him that they did not even offer him food at night and on top of it took the advance and did not bother to return him the change.

The bond between the sisters and the moments of enjoyment they share in their very restricted life is wonderfully shown in the song "Aanki Chali"...where the three of them get ready to crush the spices that they sell to the local motel... Listen to the wonderful rhythm of the song... RDB's forte...using everyday objects to produce music...they beat the spices with a long wooden pole which they push towards each other rhythmically singing that wonderful nonsense... with those teasing tougue twisters... "jhumman jhunniya..." "phool phool ke phulka" "pichak pichak pichkari"

Mere Apne(1970)

Remake of Apanjan (1968) by Tapan Sinha who is a very respected name in Bengali Cinema...He has a long association with Hindi cinema too. His Kabuliwala(1956) got the Golden Berlin Bear award and was remade in hindi by Bimal Roy. He wrote the wonderful story of Bawarchi. He also directed a few films in Hindi, he redirected his orginial Sagina Mahato (1970) as Sagina(1973). Some other films that he directed were Safed Hanthi, Aadmi aur Aurat, Ek Doctor Ki Maut, Arjun Pandit.

To come back to Apanjan, the original had the magnificent Chhaya Devi - remember the grand old lady in Alaap who is Amitabh's teacher? - in the role that Meena Kumari did. Am attaching a picture of Chhaya Devi...

The name of the bangla film was "Aponjon" which translated would mean 'Mere Apne'.

To answer your question, no I haven't had the opportunity but those that have tell me it is a great movie.

There is this song - Roz akeli aaye, roz akeli jaaye, chaand katora liye bhikharan raat - from Mere Apne that I believe was never included in the final film. Salilda, well, lifted the entire tune from a Nazrul Geeti (as the songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam are referred to) - 'meghla nishi bhorey, mon je kemon korey'. The funny thing is that one of the more popular recordings of this bangla song is in the voice of Kumar Sachin Dev Burman (!) smile.gif Just an interesting trivia that I thought I would mention.

Okay googled for the song with "nazrul" thanks to Shaibaal and came across some more interesting trivia on "Roz Akeli Aaye". The song was not used in the film as it was supposed to be sung by Meena Kumari and she was so ill that it could never be shot. Gulzar refused to have the song in the film as a background song so it was not included...

Two stanzas of the song were released but there were actually three stanzas. Apparently Gulzar released the song in one of his compilations and this one had a different stanza along with the common one. The compiled song is uploaded in the salilda.com site that was created by his ardent fan Gautam Choudhury.

Here is the compiled version of the song... (the first stanza is missing in most available copies of the song...)

Just posted the song here. I have only got a 32 kbps version I am afraid but the sound is not too bad. I know Asha Bhonsle has also recorded the same song in bangla but I do not have a copy of the same. Enjoy! smile.gif

Thank you for the prompt upload... in the past week I badgered another group for this song... and got the SDB version and have been listening to it ever since. Beautiful rendition... So now for some further demands... how about a translation of the song and some info on Nazrul geeti(your source will not be revealed... biggrin.gif )... Most of the web information on Nazrul geeti end up giving basically biographical details about Kazi Nazul Islam.

On another note... did not know it had been sung by AB too (wonder who provided the music), I was told that Manna Dey also sang a version of the same song. The "Main Albeli" track from Buzdil is also based on this song (source:Srinivas).

I protest for 'Roz Akeli Aaye' song.

I have seen ‘Mere Apne’ very next day, when it was released, I still remembers this movie for

-‘Roz Akeli Aaye’ song picturised on Meena Kumari but can’t remember whether the song was in background OR by Meena Kumari but the song was very much there. (perhaps, later on it may have been removed, if so then why !?!? )

-The other song ‘Koii Hota Jisko Apna Hum Apna Keh Lete Yaaro’ ,remained head-hunting for quit long period.

-Handsome young Vinod Khanna

-Young ‘khoonkhaar’ Shatru having cut mark near his lips

-Thaki-Thaki Sii Meena Kumari

- College students ‘Gang War’ (I was newbie in college hence it had made strong IMPACT in memory)

It was a emotional movie.

After seeing the movie, I remarked -‘Gulzar’ a dangerous entity.

Next his movie I have seen was ‘Masoom’. My God !!!.

That was straight from the heart... aapka andaaz-e-bayan padh kar maza aa gaya.... tongue1.gif I am surprised about your info about the song being included in the movie... most of the write-ups on the song mention that it was not included. Have a dvd that definitely does not have the song, but that naturally does not prove anything, I have a dvd of Namkeen that has chopped off two songs and the ending and made it completely different!!! angry.gif

Yes, one of my first impressions of Mere Apne was that both Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan looked so young... and it is a movie about youth...

Meena Kumari, despite the annoying wig and the bad make-up was, I thought, brilliant in the movie. She is an old lonely widow who lives in the village and is suddenly remembered by a very distant nephew who takes her to the city professing that he is concerned about her loneliness but in reality is in dire need of a maidservant who will look after his son as both the husband and wife go out to work. Meena Kumari brought up on old world values goes to the city and very soon realises the equation...

I remember some scenes so vividly in the movie. The wife Sumita Sanyal is getting ready to go to work and is trying to shrug off her irritation at Meena Kumari's interference... At this point Meena Kumari is vocally showing her disapproval of short hair and pants that modern working women wear...complaining that one cannot distinguish men from women nowadays... and then suddenly the scene shifts to years ago when her husband (Deven Verma) who used to work for the Nautanki and often played female roles is dressing up for the play and is adjusting his wig and saree with professional care... and Meena Kumari bursts into giggles of fond memories... Talk about gender-benders... The scene is handled so deftly by Gulzar(I do want to see the original), picking up a very common point of conflict and manages to build empathy for the old woman who comes across as so much more broadminded even while she is annoyingly old-fashioned... Baghban despite some emotional moments when one sneaked and wiped a tear(cursing Amitabh Bachchan!!!) was so melodramatic and didactic and quite unpalatable logically...

On the other hand there are these two warring bands of unemployed youth who have nothing better to do but get involved in street fights and who are exploited by the political parties for their own agenda... Shunned and feared by the rest of the colony, they and Meena Kumari forge an unlikely bond which is not too treacly and over-the-top... Kudos to the director again. The movie builds to its tragic climax with so much inevitability... her death is so meaningless and her body being taken away by the municipal van is mourned only by the shocked group of young people who watch it helplessly...

SD's version is indeed wonderful. About translations, what you need is a poetic one and not the literal one - and I don't have the necessary skills with the language - actually any language.

I am a huge fan of Nazrul Geeti. Unlike his illustrious contemporary, he had very modest means. The language of his poetry therefore is not of the same (for want of a better word) 'class' but more down to earth. Works for me! Also, he used almost 200 ragas for his compositions and also invented a few of his own. There is more - but maybe I should start a thread in the Bangla section with a few of my favorites....

Time for a flashback once again. Since November 6 marks the 20th death anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar, I’ve chosen one of Sanjeev’s and my favourite films, Aandhi, as the topic of this month’s conversation.

In a way, Sanjeev and I grew up together. I knew him from his early National Theatre days. I was associated with IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association) and we’d often meet while rehearsing at the Bhulabhai auditorium in Mumbai. Sanjeev had played the old man in All My Sons, with Leela Chitnis playing his wife, and he must have been just 22 or 23 when he played the character. The best compliment he received was from Prithviraj Kapoor who asked him after the show, “Who was that old man?” Sanjeev was thrilled that the thespian himself hadn’t recognised him.

As far as I was concerned, Sanjeev Kumar was born an old man for me and he played a role much beyond his age the very first time he worked with me, in Parichay. If you’ve observed, his age group and costumes were almost the same in both Mausam and Aandhi. And yet how differently he portrayed the two characters. This is something budding actors must learn from him —changing a costume is not enough to play a different character.

So how did Aandhi come about? The story started with J Om Prakash, who wanted to make a film with Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen. He asked me to direct it. Sachin Bhowmick, who’d written the story, narrated it to me, in the presence of Sanjeev Kumar and Omji. But I felt the heroine’s role didn’t do justice to Suchitraji’s talent. I told them, if this is the story you want to make, there’s no need to trouble Suchitraji. Any actress could do the role. To my pleasant surprise, Sachinda agreed with me.

The question then arose: What should we make? I told them I’d think about a story. And came up with a synopsis revolving around a politician who arrives at a hotel to discover the hotel manager is her estranged husband. To begin with the husband is very traditional, conservative. He doesn’t like his wife going out to work. But towards the end, he realises his mistake. So when the wife tells him she wants to give up her career, he tells her, “No, you have a duty to the nation. I don’t want to see you defeated—at home or outside it. I’m there with you.” The change in the husband drives the point home that a woman has as much right to go out as the man.

Contrary to popular opinion, my story wasn’t based on Indira Gandhi’s life. It had nothing to do with Indiraji. She was just the role model for the lady politician. Frankly, who better could there be? She was such a dynamic lady.

But one theatre publicised the movie with the line, “See the Prime Minister of India.” Filmfare published a photograph of that theatre and a controversy erupted. The Emergency was on and the movie was banned in its 23rd week. I was in Moscow with the print of the film when I got the news. We tried our best to get the ban revoked and J Omji pursued the matter relentlessly.

We were then asked to make a few changes in the movie. It was suggested that the protagonist, ie Suchitraji, should declare in the film that she’s a great fan of Indiraji’s. So the scene was added on, to make it clear that Suchitraji isn’t Indira Gandhi. And we got it passed by Indiraji’s government.


But Indira Gandhi lost the elections soon after. Some people asked me to revert to my original movie. But I said, it’s just a matter of time before she comes back. And that’s exactly what happened—she was back after two years.


One interesting aspect that was brought to my notice after the movie was ready was that there’s just one female character in the entire film! There’s a mention of her daughter but you never see her. I hadn’t realised that, Omji hadn’t, even the actors hadn’t!

But Sanjeev Kumar complained, “Yaar, every time I hear your script, you tell me it’s my film, but when I see the movie, to heroine ki hoti hai.” But I personally thought the movie belonged to both Sanjeev and Suchitra. If the story is about a husband and wife, how can it be just the wife’s story? I remember that when Meghna was making Filhaal, several heroes rejected the movie because they felt pregnancy is a woman’s problem. How can pregnancy be a woman’s problem without a man being involved? Similarly, in Aandhi, it’s just that the woman is the cause of conflict, so it seems as if the focus
is on her.

The music of Aandhi was a big high for Pancham and me. In the song Is mod se jaate hain kuch sust kadam raste, there’s a line Patthar ki haveli ko sheeshe ke gharondon mein, tinkon ke nasheman tak. After he’d composed the song, I found Pancham deep in thought. Suddenly, he asked me, “Gullu, where is this nasheman?” He thought it was the name of some place that the roads led to. I had to tell him that nasheman meant a ghosla or nest.
Cut to when we were shooting the song. This time it was Sanjeev’s turn to ask me the same question. “I’ve never had to ask the meaning of any lyrics. But what does nasheman mean?” he queried.

As for Tere bina zindagi se, it simply happened one day at Pancham’s house. I had dropped in and found him composing a tune for a Durga Pooja album with Gauri Prassano, one of Bengal’s top lyricists. The lyrics went something like Amar deri holo je. I was so struck by the tune that I just started writing Hindi lyrics for it even as they were polishing it. After Gaurida left, Pancham asked me, “Now what do you want me to compose for you?” I told him, “Yehi gaana karenge.”

So we kept the original tune for the mukhda, and he composed something else for the antara. But when I inserted some dialogue into the lyrics, Pancham scolded me, “Do you have any idea of sur and taal? You cut in with your dialogue anywhere you want. It’s not done!” But we did it!

I don't recollect seeing Suchitra Sen smoking or taking liquor. But there is scene where Sanjeev Kumar jokingly asks her if she would like a Coca Cola. Then the scene leads to a flash back of Suchitra Sen having a DUI accident.

Thank you for the lyrics of "Haal chaal"...

Wow aapki memory ki daad deni hogi... Just saw parts of Aandhi again and you remembered that scene very accurately... I think Gulzar added the "blame it on coca cola" scene later on in the movie (for those who don't remember, Suchitra Sen comes in drunk into a hotel where Sanjeev is the asst. manager and he gets her a room and then has to put her in bed when she goes off to sleep in the bathroom with the taps running). Suchitra later explains to him that her coca-cola had been laced with drinks... and there is a brief flash back of an obligingly stray villain lacing her drinks... However, must say that one is rather glad that Gulzar added that scene, if it allowed him to keep the drunk scene with Suchitra and Sanjeev intact...it is such a wonderfully executed one... their first meeting...

That poem set me thinking about just how much of autobiography you can read into a work of art... I never realised it before or maybe I am reading too much into it now but it does seem that Aandhi has fairly strong autobiographical elements in in.

Went back to Aandhi after years...Sanjeev Kumar is an amateur poet in the movie a fact that crops up at various points in the movie. and then I read a comment in some review of Meghna Gulzar's book on her father (which is apparently mentioned in the book) that Gulzar's fixed routines and his "lights-out-at-ten" schedule had provoked Rakhee to say "Agar aap shayar na hote to bade hi ordinary hote"

Suchitra on the phone listening to Sanjeev's recitation...wonderful love scene laced with just the right blend of realism and humor that comes alive in the perfect inflections brought to it by Sanjeev and Suchitra.

All the three magnificent duets of Aandhi are redolent with an intense sense of regret, of loss...not just the "Tere Bina Zindagi Se" song but even the two other songs that are used as romantic duets... For some reason I have always been disappointed with the picturization of the songs..."Ke hum tak tumhari dua aa rahi thi..." such an evocative song... beautifully sung and beautifully composed... seems rather wasted when used in a very ordinary way with Suchitra and Sanjeev strolling along some ruins or mountains with sundry, close-up shots of flowers or an eagle circling the sky...Similarly with the "Is mod Se Jaate Hain" song... the lyrics of the song are somewhat sombre "Ye soch ke baithi hoon/Ik raah to woh hogi/Tum tak jo pohachti hai... " similar in tone with the poem really (Ik roz toh yoon hoga/jis mod pe baitha hoon/us mod pe aakar tum/ruk jaaogi). It fits rather uncomfortably in the movie as a romantic duet...


While it is silly to look for exact parallels from Gulzar's life in Aandhi, the movie is heavy with the sense of a regret about a relationship gone wrong. The regret is expressed in the lyrics and dialogues and not really explored analytically in the movie...and for some reason the brouhaha over Aandhi's political parallels with Indira Gandhi's life mutes these other more personal parallels with Gulzar's life.

Very well put BC. Gulzar's extreme romanticism, love as pure emotion, "haath se chuke use rishton ka ilzaam na do". Was in love with the song for ever. However, as you mention, in the movie the scene shifts between the actress singing the song and Waheeda Rehman which creates a distance between the extreme romanticism of the song and the consequences of love on the three main characters in the movie. The song may not have ironical overtones but the way it is used in the movie(it is the title song of the movie), it cannot but underline the tragic irony of the situation. Love has such disastrous consequences in the movie, it is so self-centered, destructive, pushing people into the the dark world of insanity...

One of my favorite songs... the intimacy is so vividly captured in the lyrics, the score, the singers and the pair enacting the scene... Fits in beautifully in the movie... Dharmendra is Hema's fiance who is tragically killed in an accident by Jeetendra. Inspite of Jeetendra's love (and the movie is definitly the love story of Hema and Jeetendra)... Hema is trapped in the past and does not want to come out of it and the song is a revelation of the passion and harmony of that past relationship which is contrasted with the jarring sets of circumstances that the relationship between Jeetendra and Hema is built upon and Gulzar's genius is to show the beauty and passion in both ... What a gorgeous movie it was... supported by Pancham's incredible score. Each song in the album is a gem.

I'd always wanted to write songs that could be part of the narrative,
or in the form of a scene that could be set to music. Generally
speaking, songs are treated like item numbers in Hindi movies. The
story pauses for the song and then continues till the next song
arrives. I wanted to do something different.

Ek hi khwab kayee baar dekha hai maine from Kinara was one such
experiment. Though it never set a trend, it was well appreciated. It's
not a song, it's a scene that has been shot musically. It has lines
like, 'Tiku ki bacchi, will you shut up?'

When I took Ek hi khwab to Pancham, his first reaction was, "Kya hai
yeh... gaana hai ya scene hai?" I told him, "Yeh scene hai, par isse
gaana hai." At which, he smacked his forehead in exas- peration and
exclaimed, "Koi kaam seedha nahin karta hai."

After much grumbling, he deigned to read the song. He'd just reached
the second line when his frown deepened. The line was Tune sari mein
uddas li hain meri chaabiyan ghar ki. He pushed away his harmonium and
started off again, "Is this a song? Chaabiyan koi poetry hoti hai?"
Every time he hummed the tune, he'd stop at chaabiyan, grumble some
more and request me to change the word. But I was adamant. He tried
his best to make me change my mind but I didn't budge.

(For a long time after that, he'd address me as Chaabiyan. Every time
I entered his music room, he'd go, "Lo, Chaabiyan aa gayeen." And
after that incident, he'd get after me whenever I used an unusual
word. Which was quite often.)

The song was recorded in Hema Malini's and Bhupinder's voices. Now
Hema is very surili; she really sings well. And every time she'd sing
her lines, Bhupi would get upset. When he couldn't hold back any
longer, he burst out, "She's too good, yaar!"

(I'd seen something similar happening between Manna De and Meena
Kumari in Pinjare Ke Panchi. He wouldn't say anything to her but he'd
come up to me and the sound recordist and complain, "Yaar, it's very
difficult to sing in front of her. Main unko dekhoon, ya unse baat
karoon, ya gaana gaoon?

After we recorded Ek hi khwab, Pancham decided he wanted to add to
the song. So he just handed Bhupi a pair of headphones and told him to
strum his guitar spontaneously. Would you believe it; Bhupi did it in
one take. He asked for another take but Pancham felt the first was
perfect. That's why I always say that Pancham always had the last
word. He knew his job and you couldn't question him.

Next came the picturisation. The song was supposed to be a flashback
in the film and we wanted a star for a guest appearance. I was a
little embarrassed to ask Hema Malini to put in a word with
Dharmendra. Though their romance was already in the air, they were
still hush-hush about it and were still in the we-are-just-friends
stage. But when we were discussing the names of actors we could
approach, she surprised me by asking shyly, "Why my friend cannot play
that role?"

She didn't have to name him; you could read his name written all over
her face. So I called up Dharmendra and he agreed to do the role right
then, on the phone. I remain grateful to him for that; it was such a
beautiful gesture. I think he liked working with me, because one day
he asked me, "Kya guest role hi karvaoge mujhse? "
I told him we'd work together and offered him the title role in
Devdas. It was the role of a lifetime. Unfortunately the movie was
shelved after two schedules. I still feel he was the best choice for
that role. I never worked with him ever again. My dream of working
with Dharmendra ended there. Bas ek hi khwab kayee baar dekha maine...

Thanks for the lyrics. Song is a feather in his cap. He didn't write many
folk songs/songs based on folklores and tales earlier.

Master ji ki chitthi (Kitaab) is a song of different genre.

He gradually slipped into the mould of Versatile Lyricist. Good example.
He tried to remain a poet always, though.

Ketan Mehta's uneven film based on Flaubert's Madame Bovary. As often happens with adaptations, comparisons are inevitable. The story is about a bored house-wife with an overly romantic sensibility (in the novel she is shown as reading "romances" and Ketan Mehta innovatively changes it to Deepa Sahi's obsession with Hindi films). However, the book which is a sympathetic yet unrelenting critique of the romantic sensibility as well as an exposure of the emptiness of provincial life is sort of lost in the film which indulges in romantic and lush picturizations of Maya's dreams... I am not sure that using Gulzar as the lyricist of the movie was a strength or not...

In the song Maya's loneliness is evident but the perceptions (barkha pyaasi, tanhai mein tasveeron ke chehre bharte rehna...etc etc) seem more Gulzarish than the character's. And the same goes for the other superb songs in the movie... they don't fit with the character IMO...

Just checked the "Thak Gayee Ho" song, it is not a duet but a solo. I got all the song info from Ultra-India and had not checked against the songs. No, I am afraid I don't have the Rekha solo.

Thank you for the beautiful lyrics, have not read much of Gulzar's poetry apart from his film lyrics. My loss...thank you for uploading this particular one which seems very close to his heart. Did not realise that he wrote so directly about these themes. Any idea when this one was written? Please do write down some more if you have them handy.

In the last couple of years, you've worked with Mani Ratnam on Dil Se on one hand, and with Desh Deepak, a newcomer, on the other. How do you select your films?

The subject is the major attraction. I dont care how big or small the scale of the film, as long as it has something unusual to say. Jahan Tum... seemed a clean film, and I liked Desh's approach.

I've worked on many 'firsts' : Ramesh Sippy's Andaaz, Prakash Jha's Hip Hip Hurray, Kalpana Lazmi's Ek Pal, Ramesh Sharma's New Delhi Times, Bhimsen's Gharonda,shekhar Kapoor's Masoom....

Speaking of Desh Deepak's 'first' then, the song 'Aththanni Si Zindagi' seems to stand out

The lyrics of the song complement its lilting melody and beat. The song is about life's spontanaeity.
But more lasting, I think, will be the song Jhooth Bolta Hai Roz Roz Aaina, sung by Lataji and then again by Rekha Bhardwaj. It has more depth.


You've teamed up with Vishal regularly since you first worked with him on the theme song of the serial, 'Daane Anaar Ke'. What is so special about his music?

I was responsible for giving him his first feature film break - we did Maachis together. He brought melody back into music when there was only beat. In Jahan Tum... too, it's his melody that holds you.

Dil Se was your first venture with AR Rehman. It was a succesful liaison - the album stands out from among the year's offerings. But did this kind of music undercut your lyrics?

Certainely not. The music and lyrics in all the songs make the journey together - neither overtakes the other. Rehman's music like Vishal's, will survive. It has both a classical and folk quality that are deeply attached to the soil. All the songs in Dil Se have a sufiana feel.
Rehman has broken the conventional format of the sng, bringing it closer to blank verse, free verse. (Pauses) I would like to work again with him.

Who is your favourite music director of all time?

R D Burman, of course. We joined the film industry together, he assisting S D Burman, and I, as assistant to Bimal Roy. We got our first break almost at the same time, worked and grew together.

Well the standards of poetry have dropped along with the deterioration of values in today's world. The song has become some thing you consume instantly

Music has a natural place in our lives. Right from the shlok you recite in your morning puja and the milkman who comes whistling on his cycle, to the fakir singing as he begs for alms and your mother humming around the kitchen...music fills our spaces naturally.

Thoughful lyrics again...when Gulzar does not become too fanciful, his lyrics seem so descriptive of the cotrariness of real emotions as it is here... "Main kahoon ke yun to dil kahe ke yun nahin/Janti hoon sab magar samajh mein aaye na" or for that matter "saans jo sulagti hai/to aankh jalti hai" . Lata's voice does not sound too great though and it would indeed be interesting to hear a fresh voice singing this song. From the reviews of the film it seems however that the film was pretentious and boring... what a terrible combination!!!
