i really wonder what made her that she got married to kishore kumar and soon got divorce..i dont remember the film name where she played a blind girl, she was grt in it..in fact i think she even got best actress nominee for that film, but today if we look at filmfare nominees of 70s,i cant find her name in any year's best actress nominations..
and seems like after films she got busy with her family big time, that she produced four childern..(is it not little too much)

That was Janata Hawaldar opp. Rajesh Khanna. The movie was released in 1979.

Meena Kumari did all kinds of roles, yet attained the sobriquet of Tragedy Queen. Stepson Shandaar Amrohi, who has announced an annual Acting Excellence award in the actress's name, recalls his Chhoti Ammi, a woman of many moods

"My father had announced Anarkali with Meena Kumari in the early '50s. A few scenes were canned at Bombay Talkies Studios and it was financed by a silver merchant. After one schedule, the film was abandoned. Later Meenaji, or Chhoti Ammi as I called her, was travelling to Pune when she had an accident and was admitted in Pune's Sassoon Hospital. My father would go and meet her there and that's how love bloomed. They were married in 1952.

They soon came together in Daera professionally, but it flopped. But Baiju Bawra in 1952 changed everything - Meena Kumari became a top star and soon dad launched Pakeezah, a script that she loved.

When my father and Chhoti Ammi married, my mother Mahmudi and we three kids-my brother Tajdar and sister Rukhsar - were all living in Amroha, and we came to know about the nikaah from a report in Shama, a top monthly. I was told that I had a Chhoti Ammi too, but was told young to understand what it meant.

Soon, my relatives began to go to Mumbai as there was some consternation. But each would come back charmed by the politeness and humility of the lady. My own maternal grandfather was suffering from a terminal disease and went to Mumbai for treatment. He came back floored by Meena Kumari and told us, "Ussne to mere beti se bhi zyaada seva ki." And so it went on - Chhoti Ammi conquered my chacha and all my aunts. And my mother finally met her and succumbed to her charms too!

Soon, my brother and I also came to Mumbai and slowly my relationship with her grew. She was a caring mother to me, yet a woman of moods. She would also take my brother and me out and was very concerned about our education. On the professional front, she was now a major star and that was a side that I could not fully understand as a kid. But she did take us to the shootings of Yahudi and Miss Mary. She was a dramatic actress who did every kind of role, but she was known best as the Tragedy Queen.

After my father shot the song Inhi logon ne, she insisted that such a song and a film like Pakeezah deserved to be made in colour. So my father scrapped the black-and-white reels and began to reshoot the film in colour with characteristic meticulousness. The Gulabi Mahal and Bazaar-E-Husn sets were created with an unhurried sense of perfection. But no hero was willing to do this heroine-oriented film. There was talk of signing Dharmendra when the film was abruptly stopped in 1964.

Around that time, a secretary poisoned her mind against my father. I do not know exactly what happened, but on one day, after Chhoti Ammi shot at Filmistan Studios, she went straight to actor Mehmood's house (he had married her sister) and never returned home. My father rushed there, I do not what transpired between them, but after that their respective egos took over. They never spoke a word against each other, never had a divorce, and always loved each other till the end.

And this finally facilitated the completion of Pakeezah. Sunil Duttsaab convinced Chhoti Ammi to complete the film and it was revived around 1968-'69. The remaining scenes were shot, and though she was in ill-health and her body and face had changed, my father overcame the difficulty by using a duplicate. For example there was a long- shot in the song Aaj hum apne duaaon ka asar dekhenge that was shot with Padma Khanna.

Chhoti Ammi would address my father as Chandan, and he would call her Manju. She was given to extremes and she was sensitive. After attending the premiere of Pakeezah, as she was leaving she told me, "Apne abbu-jaan se keh dena ki ab koi picture na banaaye." Shortly before that, she came to know that Kamalsaab had fallen ill just before the release of the film and she came to visit him, but her health disallowed her from climbing the two floors to our flat. I offered to carry her up, but she just said, "Unse kehna Manju aayi thi. Aur apna khayaal rakkhe."

Her flair for shaayari is well-known, but few know that she also kept a diary. Recorded in her diary were details of how she and my father met the famous daku, Amrutlal. Her weak point as a star was that she was not a great dancer, otherwise she would have been even more successful.

In those days actresses would rarely be friends with each other, but Chhoti Ammi was good friends with Nargis. She had a great sense of music and would always say that among the young actresses, Sadhana would replace her. Though I never showed any acting talent, she always hinted that I would become an actor and encouraged me. My father was not in favour and I finally did just one film - Razia Sultan - in the negative role of a prince.

She angered her Sunni community by insisting that she should be buried as a Shia because my father was one - proof again that she still loved him. The uproar was silenced when my father showed the clear statement in her will.

Today, I have given Chhoti Ammi the unprecedented honour of having an annual Acting Excellence award instituted in her honour. Each year it will go to a young actress of today and a senior star. This year I have chosen Tabu and the late Nutanji. I am a good judge of acting and I know that while she was unequalled among our actresses Nutan was the only one who came close to her."

Hello Reeth,

Just joined HF and overwhelmed by all this amazing info. Thanks for the write-ups and pictures.
I am a little obsessive about Devika Rani and was wondering if you had any idea about why the split with Sashadhar Mukherjee happened? Ashok Kumar, SM, Gyan Mukherjee etc. had some issues apparently and formed Filmistan...

Any ideas on the subject?

Paro Devi

Hello Paro devi, thanks a lot for looking in here and posting your comment...I think the split came about after Devika rani eloped with her co star...Mahesh may be able to throw more light on the topic..

Jayprada

Born in 1962,Jayaprada started her career at very young age,she started working in telgu films and got success. She did some more south's tamil films. In last of seventies she did bollywood film Sargam which was remake of her south hit. This remake oppocite Rishi Kapoor got huge success and got her critical acclaim too.She played the role of Mute Girl,so dubbing was no probblem for her.But later she faced probblems coz she was not knowing Hindi well.So she continued with her south films. But she was back in bollywood with Kaamchor, film got average success and she got more bollywood flicks. She got compliments from Satyajeet Ray that she is one of Beautiful face of Indian Cinema. With success of Mawali,Tohfa,Sharaabi and Maqsad she got No.1 Posistion in bollywod.During same time Sridevi too got success. There was tough competition between both actresses and there were some igo probblems too,but both were proffesionals and did many films together.Sridevi got more chances than Jayaprada.Where Jayaprada was leading lady of Dharmendra,Sridevi did films with Dharmendra's son Sunny Deol.Jayaprada did most of films with Amitabh and Jeetendra,But Sridevi got to work with 80s actors.Jayaprad too got to work with Mithun,Sunny,Sanjay & Jacie but her films with these actors were not successful.

Jayaprada was tagged in saree clad good housewife's roles.Even in these roles she got good responce.Sanjog's double role was one of her challenging performances, same year she got critical acclaim for Sur Sangam. She fell in love with a married film producer Srikant Nahata, got married to him and continued films.Ganga Jamuna Saraswati,Elaan E Jung,Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani,Aaj Ka Arjun,Sindhoor,Maa,Thaanedar etc were among her other hits.Maa's role of spirit got her critical acclaim and box office success too.In 90s where new actresses were coming,Jayaprada was still getting films. Her most ambitious projects Zakhmee Zameen,Soutan Ki Beti,Tyagi,Khalnaika and Dhartiputra failed at box office. She continued acting with Dharmendra starring films. Her portrayel of Sita in Luv Kush too could not get much attention. So she almost cut down working in films and joined politics.

She was nominated to be an MP in Rajyasabha by TDP party. Following differences with party Supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu, she left TDP to join SP and contested from Rampur parliamentary Constituency in UP during the last General election in 2004.She also made her comeback with guest apperance role oppocite Amitabh Bacchan in Khakee. This year she made her stage debut with show Amarpali and also going to make her singing debut with her home production.Apart from home production film with Priyanshu Chatterji and Irfan Khan, she is also doing a film called Deh with Dino Morea,Amrita Arora & Mahesh Manjarekar. Now she is in politics and also in films too.

May be you dont know-She made one of her career's biggest mistake by refusing Nageena bcoz she was not willing to work with Snakes,Her loss was Sridevi's Gain. She also refused Karishma starring Shakti and Mithun starring Kasam Paida Karnewale Ki,these roles went to Deepti Naval and Smita Patil. She got Filmfare Best Actress Nominees for Sargam,Sharaabi and Sanjog.

Her Performances-Sargam(Rishi K),Kaamchor(Rakesh R),Sharaabi,Aaj Ka Arjun(Amitabh sunglasses2.gif,Tohfa,Mawali,Aulad(Jeetendra,Sridevi),Swarg Se Sundar(Jeetendra,Mithun,Padmini),Sanjog,Maa,Luv Kush(Jeetendra),Sur Sangam(Girish Karnad),Muddat(Mithun C),Sindhoor(Shashi K,Govinda,Neelam),Ganga Jamuna Saraswati(Amitabh,Meenakashi),Elaan E Jung(Dharmendra)etc.

Jaya Prada's face is her fortune. She was a hot pinup girl of the boys working in the Gulf.
As for her filmy roles, I liked her immensely in KAAM CHOR. She looked so dignified and beautiful! smile.gif

i think she is one of the most beautiful lady of indian cinema..becoz of her short height, she did not look good in western outfits..but than we know what kind of costumes 80s actresses were wearing(so bright colours, strange fashion)...
every decade is having a tragic queen..meena was 50 n 60s tragic queen, nanda from 60s,rakhee and reena from 70s and jayaprada from 80s..in most of her films she played the role of woman, who cant concieve and she has to go through lot of hell in her married life..she tried to change her image with jadugar, but audience always liked her in goodie goodie roles..

The sex appeal of Reena Roy lies in her portrayal of a woman who can be harmed, a hurt-woman who needs protection - sorry I'm unable to get the righ word at the moment. As I had mentioned before, she cultivated a Nutan-like dialogue delivery minus her histrionics of course.

Born in 1962,Tina Munim was from Gujrati family,She took part in a teen beauty contest and won the title,Dev Anand was looking for heroin for his film Des Pardes, saw her pictures in a magazine, and selected her for Des Pardes(1978).Film got success and she was star.Later she got to work with director Basu Chatterjee in Baaton Baaton Mein oppocite Amol Palekar. She got hits like Aap Ke Deewane,Karz,Kaatilon Ke Kaatil,Rockey,Fifty Fifty,Soutan etc.On the other side some of her big projects flopped too like Pukar,Lootmaar,Deedar E Yaar,Rajput,Alag Alag,Bade Dilwala,Harjaee,Manpasand etc.

She played roles of innocent girl in Des Pardes,Karz,Baaton Baaton Mein etc.But most of her roles were of glamoures and brat richie girl. She had an affair with Sanjay Dutt and Rajesh Khanna,There was a talk that both(Rajesh-Tina) used same truthbrush. Its said that Teena was also coz of Rajesh-Dimple divorce. She did many films with Rajesh Khanna. Most successful film of her with Rajesh Khanna was Soutan, she got more footage, but Padmini steal the whole show, same thing happened with her many times like Poonam too got more nice reviews for Yeh Waada Raha. But hits were there in her kitty.

She was never known for her acting ablities, but for her glamoures looks and her link-ups.But whenever she got good roles, she always made a mark. She got to play an author backed role in Rajesh Khanna's Alag Alag directed by Shakti Samata. She played the role of singer. But this film could not do well. She got success with films like Yudh and Aakhir Kyun. She also did some wrong b grade films like Kaamagni and Saat Bijliyan. But she decided to quit films. She complted her old assignments and refused many film offeres. She went to Calofornia for studies. She got the degree and came back in 90s.Industrialist Anil Ambani had crush on him,She got married to him.Now she is involved in many charitable and art based progrrames.Tina is one of those actress, whose contribution as an actress is not that great, but coz of her family backround(relience) she got special treatment(by media) as she is a legend.Recently when she was asked why she left the films when she was still going well, she replied that she felt as an actor she achieved, what she could and it was better to leave films when you are availble than leaving films when there is no work availble for you.

May be you dont know-She got to work with Govinda, but film could not get complete, this film was said to be similer to Kaho Na Pyar Hai.For Yeh Waada Raha both Poonam and Tina's voice were dubbed by Jaya Bacchan.

i have no idea abt jayaprada's personal life..

Sorry for adding this belatedly.
Jayaprada's actual name is Lalita Rani, born on April 3rd, 1962. Down south, in telugu films, she had a fabulous run right from mid seventies. She can really act well..and did show her mettle in some fine films of those times.
The most noted among her films are Anthu leni katha ( story without an end ) where she played the working woman who took care of her family sacrificing her interests..a landmark film of noted director K.Balachander, it started her on a fine career..
Then came the Siri siri muvva ( Sargam in hindi ) of K.Viswanath which was another landmark film in telugu filmdom, where she played the role of a deaf mute danseuse to perfection..
And the pinnacle of her career was with Kamal hasan in Sagara sangamam where they both looked beyond this world...another magnum opus of K.Viswanath...
She married Srikanth Nahata, son of noted telugu film producer Sundarlal Nahata..who was already married. Hers is an unhappy marriage, as she attempted suicide a couple of times, unsuccessfully. She was in news a couple of years before, when the couple tried to payoff someone to donate a Kidney to Srikanth nahata, as he was diagnosed with serious renal problems...the issue was sorted out later.
Now, a standing MP of Loksabha...she was not particularly noted for her philanthropy or political acumen.. She never had any child of her own biologically.
By the time she came on to Hindi films, she was past her prime...and ofcourse many of her films were retakes of telugu hits...done so belatedly, they looked kind of odd.
posting a picture from each of these films... You people do such a great job on this thread, i just keep dropping from time to time.. glad to make this little contribution. smile.gif

Tina is a very average actress in my honest opinion. She was lovely to look at though now she is an eyesore with all that excess weight .
She is not able to do justice even when she is given an excellent role like in ' Yeh Vaada raha' where even a non actress like Poonam Dhillon walks over her, and 'Baaton baaton mein ...the only film where she is passable was'Souten', and a great deal was made of that role, goes to show how mediocre she was....but no 2 opinion about her flawless beauty..

Born in 1945 to film producer Nanubhai Desai and Jyotsna – a stage actress, However, Bindu’s road to success was not an easy one. With her father’s demise at the young age of 13 and being the eldest daughter the burden of earning the daily meal for the family fell on her young-frail shoulders. Bindu, bravely stood up to the challenge and took up whatever modelling assignments came her way.She got offer of film Anpadh, she played doughter of Dharamendra and Mala Sinha, but she did not get much work. But, it was only after her marriage to Champaklal Zaveri, that she got her first film offer. It was to be director Raj Khosla’s Do Raaste. She steal the whole show in the presence of biggest stars. She became reknown vamp. Bindu had pronounced her arrival as a vamp. With a sting of hits behind her, she successfully managed to break out of the myth that married actresses usually do not go on to become sex symbols, and especially not in our Hindi film industry. Her performances like Shabnam of Kati Patang and Mona Darling of Zanzeer are remembered as we remember Gabbar of Sholay and Mogambo of Mr India.
But then a sex symbol was not all that Bindu was, her acting abilities were seen in films like Abhimaan, 1973, Chaitali and in Hrishida's Arjun Pundit. She proved to be just as convincing as the crippled woman in Chaitali as the deglamourised role of wife to Ashok Kumar in Arjun Pandit. An impending pregnancy, followed by an unfortunate miscarriage, brought about a lull in her career and on the advice of her doctors she had to end her stint as the glamorous vamp – dancing and all. However, she could not stay away long and returned back to the silver screen with character roles – Hero, Biwi Ho To Aisi and Kishen Kanhaiya and with many other such movies she managed to re-establish herself as the unmerciful and cruel ma-in-law, or the cynical bua, chachi, mausi…
Today, leading a comparatively low-profiled life, Bindu is seen making fewer onscreen appearances. What can be unanimously said is that though many came and tried to fit into the vacuum left by Bindu none could match up to her heights. After Bindu, neither has anybody seen that kind of success, nor has anybody been able to imitate this illustrious vamp.

May be you dont know-She got Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Nominations for Do Raaste,Hawas,Abhimaan,Imtihaan and Arjun Pandit, she also endrosed for Lux Soap.

Her Performances-Do Raaste(Balraj S,Rajesh K,Mumtaz,Kamini K,Prem C),Kati Patang(Asha P,Rajesh K,Prem C),Zanzeer,Abhimaan(Amitabh Bachan,Jaya Bachan),Imtihaan(Tanuja,Vinod K),Joshila(Dev,Rakhee,Hema),Hawas(Nitu,Anil Dhawan),Chaitali(Dharamendra,Saira sunglasses2.gif,Amar Prem(Sharmila T,Rajesh K,Sujit K,Vinod Mehra),Chambal Ki Rani(Dara Singh),Ganga Ki Sougandh(Amitabh,Rekha,Amjad),Bandhan Kache Dhagon ka(Shashi,Rakhi,Zeenat),Biwi Ho To Aisi(Rekha,Farookh S,Salmaan K,Kader K),Hum Aapke Hain Kaun(Salmaan,Madhuri),Main Hoon Na(with Shahrukh Khan,Sushmita Sen)etc.

SF bhai you are right about Tamil and Telugu versions being major hit. Aval oru thodarkathai.. was a box office hit .. - credit fully goes to the director K. Balachander (who also made Sarita-Kamalahasan starrer - Marocharita - which was later taken in Hindi - Ek duje ke liye).

Actually she was nominated thrice for Filmfare awards in Hindi...Sargam (79), Sanjog (85) and Sharabi (84) but didnt win. but she received a Lifetime Achievement award of Filmfare for 2007.
Downsouth, she didnt win any filmfare awards ..but won the following awards..

# Kala Saraswati Award
# Kinnera Savitri Award
# Rajiv Gandhi Award
# Nargis Dutt Gold Medal
# Shakuntala Kala Rathnam Award
# Uttam Kumar Award

What she lacked was the professionalism of Sridevi..but at their peak, both were neck to neck with hit after a hit.

HT Bhai...I have great respect for K.Balachander. The amazing way he used to make films with shoe string budget makes me think of Bimal Roy. I always tried not to miss a single film of his..though he is famous for heart breaking tragedies...His films always had a wonderful music to go with...he certainly deserves more than what he got. Actually he introduced both Rajini kanth and Kamal Hasan among other excellent talents. Rajini gave him a Guru Dakshina by acting for his Kuselan...free of cost. But the film has bombed..it seems. here is a picture of this legendary director...

i heard she is good friend of jayasudha(who was said to be south's reena roy,may be coz she did some of reena's remakes including apnapan,i m not sure)..according to her jayaprada never ever felt bad abt playing small part than her, whenever both worked in one film, but she was also a top actress along with her and sridevi...

Aruna Irani needs no introduction. Cine-goers in India are all too familiar with the myriad roles she has portrayed in Hindi films, be it the archetypical vamp, the character artist or her more recent avatar, that of producer of Bollywood movies. Along with husband Kuku Kohli who is a director.Aruna began her career as child artist in Ganga Jamuna,So from the early age she started supporting her family like other yesteryear actresses too.Soon the teenager aruna got offers of supporting roles in films like Parasmani,Farz,Nartaki etc.
Than she got films like Lakhon mein EK,Budha Mil Gaya,Sanjog etc but Naya Jamana and Carvan gave her opurtunity to show her talent both were totally different roles and Aruna played both roles very well. She got main lead in Bombay to Goa oppocite Amitabh Bachan but it was an avarage flick.Aruna was not accepted as main lead actress and she go on playing powerful supporting roles in films like Bobby,Charas,Laila Majnu,Mili etc.

She worked oppocite Amitabh Bachan,Mehmood,Devan Verma etc as heroin, played sisters to top actors, vamp who sedused Heroes and Mother of young actors. Becouse of her glamoures image she nevar got main lead apart from few films. She played main lead in b-grade films too but she could not get main leads like Mumtaz in A grade films. She had a long and rich career that has spanned over 30 years. She is currently acting, directing and producing, for both films and televison, she is also a social activist who is involved and lends her name to AIDS awareness. She also produced hit films like Anari No 1 and Yeh Dil Aashiqana.

May be you dont know-She got Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Nominees for Carvan,Bobby,Mili,Pet Pyar Aur Paap,Beta,Kartavya,Raja Babu and Ghulam e Mustafa. She got Award for Pet Pyar Aur Paap and Beta.

No doubt about Aruna Irani being a powerful actress - whatever the roles.
She looked so cute in Bombay to Goa. Personally, I liked her performance in SANSAR where she portrays the role of a house-maid. Her verbal tirades against Shafi Inamdar was a delight to watch where she used the heavy Marathi accent. Her "HALKAT FERNANDES" and then apologizing to Shafi in the same breath and her manly gait were all a treat to watch.
