anyways have u done leena chandrawaker or not

sad.gif NO jassi......Here's leena Chandavarkar now..... tongue1.gif

Leena Chandavarkar
- Born 1951

Leena Chandavakar possessed that modern freshness and vivacious youthful energy that was the
hallmark of the 'new' Bollywood heroine that appeared in the late 60s and early 70s. She was modern,
yet valued tradition, sexy, but also a virginal innocence.....Moon-faced and lithe, Leena Chandavarkar
could convey the heart-stopping beauty and fragility of a Dresden China doll, especially in her earlier
films. Leena never graduated to the 'thinking-actress' status but was conventionally pretty and
positively perky in her string of early 70s hits...... She possessed that complete package of the quintessential Bollywood heroine and captured the imagination of the Hindi movie going public.

In her time during the 1970s, Leena Chandavarkar vied for the number one spot as a heroine in
Bollywood and appeared in a whole string of fluff entertainers with all the top romantic actors of her
day.....
Leena Chandavarkar born in North Karnataka in the Karwar–Dharwar region....She won a talent
competition when she was 15 and after that she went to Mumbai to try her luck in acting.
Initially she worked in advertisements but eventually ventured into films. She made her debut in
Man Ka Meet produced by Sunil Dutt to introduce his brother Som Dutt.....

Sunil Dutt
entrusted his actress wife Nargis with the grueling job of grooming Leena.
Under Nargis' tutelage, Leena learnt to speak Hindi, western dancing and driving....
Man Ka Meet was a moderate success but Leena soon followed it up with a fun-filed romcom,
Humjoli, costarring Jeetendra. Two frenetically-paced duets from the film,
Dhal gaya din and Haaye re haaye, vastly entertained the audience......

Leena quickly made it to the A-list of heroines and was offered films with the biggest names. In the
Rajesh Khanna era, Shammi Kapoor made a last ditch effort to woo back his audience
by romancing the much-younger Leena in Jaane Anjaane and Preetam (both in 1971).
Leena was paired opposite Dharmendra in Rakhwala (1971) and opposite Rajesh Khanna
in H S Rawail's expensive Muslim social, Mehboob Ki Mehndi (1971). Leena looked her
prettiest in the film but, unfortunately, the film was not a success...

Ironically, Leena's career got an early fillip not through a film starring these major heroes, but in a
film with popular comedian Mehmood in the titular role. Main Sunder Hoon, ...
Leena made the most winsome pair with Sanjeev Kumar in films like Anhonee , Imaan and
Manchali...

Her list of co stars included Raaj kumar (Dil ka Raja),Vinod Khanna (Qaid),Naveen
nischal
(Aafat), Anil Dhawan(honeymoon),Dharmendra(Ek mahal ho sapnon ka)
Sanjay khan (Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi) and Dilip Kumar(Bairaag)

In 1974, after several successful films like Humjoli, Manchali ,Main sundar hoon and a total of some
40 films; Leena married Siddharth Bandodkar, the son of Dayanand Bandodkar the first
chief minister of Goa. Her husband died in a freak accident....
Leena married noted actor and singer, Kishore Kumar, her childhood idol in 1980......
Brief flirtations with films followed in the mid-80s. Leena appeared in a cameo in her one-time hero Jeetendra's home production Sarfarosh. The actress also starred opposite her
Mehboob Ki Mehndi hero Rajesh Khanna in her husband's production Mamata Ki Chhaon Mein.
But a rotund and happily married Leena was just a shadow of the Leena in her heyday. Tragically,
Kishore kumar passed away in 1987...

She quit filmdom when she got married to ace singer Kishore Kumar. She is happy to be known as
Mrs. Kishore Kumar and has kept a very low profile for herself. She has not contemplated coming
back to the world she left long back. Leena has a son Sumeet who has gone after father
Kishore kumar....She lives with her son Sumeet and step son Amit kumar...

Was it not the gunshot wound?

Yes, she was introduced by Sunil Dutt along with Vinod Khanna and Somu Dutt in the 1969 flick MAN KA MEET. Somu Dutt was a flop while Vinod Khann who played a villian rose to great heights later as a hero.
Anyway, I loved Leena's vivaciousness in Manchali, Main Sunder Hoon, Bairaag, Humjoli and Jawab. She looked extremely beautiful in Mehboob Ki Mehendi which unfortunately proved to be a flop.

Yes it was supposed to have been a freak accident, but supposedly there were rumors of his
sister Shashikala bandhodkar having been involved in a property feud with Siddharth.....

leena is doin an another job now..she is playing host of sony tv channel's show k for kishore(i m not sure abt its name)..she look grt..she was not lookin that grt in her stardom time..
let me share few facts abt her

when kamal amrohi decided to revive pakizah,he thought of leena chandrawaker, but his good friends sunil dutt and nargis suggested that he should go ahead with meena..(thank god he did not sign leena)..

leena who played bubbly girl in most of her movies(apart from mehboob ki mehandi) got a lifetime role with a film called aashirwaad which was goin to be directed by ram maheshwari(kaajal, nanak naam jahaj hai & karamyogi)..film was based on some religious theme...and leena was playing a goodie religious woman, but pran was playing an evil saint(i m not sure abt concept)..and film was abt both of them...
according to leena it was national award winning role for her..but film got shelved

Thanks a lot jassi .......BTW Why not Leena for Pakeezah? Ofcourse the role has been immortalised by Meena Kumari, probably , under the direction of the Great Kamal Amrohi Leena would have done some justice to the role.......dont you think so? smile.gif

As a kid I had seen her earlier movies such as CROREPATI and APNA HAATH JAGANNAATH both of which starred Kishore Kumar opposite her. She was a small-time actress no doubt. it is a real tragedy that happened when her husband, Director Brij (of Victoria 203 fame) killed her as well as the daughter, later shooting himself dead. The son, luckily, was not around.

On a personal level, I knew her since she used to bring her beautiful children, (including the later hero of RANG, Mike Saldanah) to my Karate Classes which, before going to the GULF, I used to conduct in the late Seventies and 1980 in the 7-Bungalow area of Mumbai.

You're welcome Reeth. smile.gif

Not really Reeth, not all film people lead a charmed life. For example, you do know the case of Navin Nischol (whom I found very handsome in Hanste Zakhm and Victoria 203). There are many others too. Not to speak of the many unfortunate actors of the Fifties. A year ago there was news that Sohrab Modi's prestigious award momento was on sale in Chor Bazaar of Bombay. The very founder of the Phalke Award - Dada Saheb Phalke - had to go abegging for survival. The famous actor Rehman's family, it appears, was passing through hand to mouth existence in some dingy chawl of Mumbai.

Anyway, life's like that.

the stereotyped role of a Hindi film heroine to give it a bold new look. Though her brush with glamour
world began very early, she metamorphosed into the sultry sex siren in the romantic era of seventies.....
Zeenat Aman was born to a Muslim father and a Hindu Brahmin Maharashtrian mother. Amanullah,
her father was one of the writers for the movie Mughal-e-Azam ....and he died when
Zeenat was just 13. ....
graduated from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai and went to Los Angeles for her studies. Upon returning
to India, she first took a job as a journalist for Femina and then later on moved on to modeling. She
was the second runner up in the Miss India Contest and went on to win the Miss Asia Pacific
in 1970.....

A non-descript film Hulchul (1971) happened. Hungama co-starred by
Kishore Kumar made in the same year too failed to create a ripple. A last minute change in
the cast gave her the opportunity to feature with Dev Anand in Hare Ram Hare Krishna (1972)
in a side role. Dum Maro Dum song immediately made Zeenat the high priestess of sex. After that,
there was no looking back for her. The film also was a precursor to one of the most effective
on screening pairing of Indian cinema of Dev Anand and Zeenat. They featured in Heera Panna
(1973), Ishq Ishq Ishq (1974), Prem Shastra (1974), Warrant (1975), Darling Darling (1977)
and Kalabaaz (1977).

She became a sought after face as all the known banners vied with each other to sign her up. In an
era, when sensuality was still kept under wraps, Zeenat gave a voluptuous performance in Raj Kapoor’s
Satyam Shivam Sundaram.
To this day, the film, and Zeenat’s role in it remain hot in controversy.
Opposite Raj Babbar in B R Chopra’s Insaaf Ka Taraazu (1980), Zeenat played a rape victim.
This film too set Zeenat in a class apart—as a crafty actress of iconoclastic roles. However, her Hollywood
career failed to take off as Shalimar co-starred by Rex Harrison, Sylvia Miles, and Dharmendra
turned out to be damp squib at the box-office. Dharamveer (1977) and Don (1978) are
two of her other noteworthy films. Her magic worked in the love triangle of Qurabani (1980) as well...

Her name came to be associated for sometime with Sanjay Khan after she featured with
him in Abdullah (1980). Thereafter Zeenat’s career came into stagnation. Films like
Teesri Aankh (1982), Bandhan Kachche Dhaagon Ka (1983), Humse Hai Zamaana (1983),
and Yaadon Ki Kasam (1985)
came, flickered and faded from public memory. None could give
her back Zeenat Aman lost charisma. Daku Hasina (1987) was a bold effort to resurrect herself,
but the film critics had by then written her professional obituary......

Zeenat Aman married actor Mazhar Khan to lead a happy and peaceful life away from camera lights.
They were blessed with two sons and everything went off well till Mazhar Khan, after suffering a
prolonged illness died of liver dysfunction. Soon after her husband’s death she was caught in an
unfortunate squabble with Mazhar’s family. However, Zeenat Aman was able to restore peace and now
she lives comfortably with her sons. Occasionally she makes an appearance on the screen as in
Bhopal Express (1999) and Kaizad Gustad's Boom (2003).

Shiela Ramani - Born 1937

Sheila Ramani, a forgotten name today, but most of us still remember her in Navketan's Taxi Driver
(1954) where she was cast as Anglo-Indian club Dancer - Sylvie. Sheila Ramani was introduced by
Chetan Anand to Hindi films, which explains her association with Navketan. She was born in
Sindh, and one of the few Sindhi actresses besides Sadhana who made it big in Bollywood. She
was crowned Miss Shimla in the early 50s and was mostly seen as upper class mod girl in the
50s, a role she enacted to perfection all through that swinging era in films like V. Shantaram's
Teen Batti Char Raaste (1953), Sheikh Mukhtar's Mangu (1954), Meenar (1954),
Railway Platform (1955), and Funtoosh (1956).

Her Uncle Sheikh Latif alias Lachchu was a famous Pakistani producer who produced films like
Pattan (1955), Khizan Kai Baad (1955), Darbar-e-Habib (1956) etc. Sheila visited Karachi -
Pakistan on the request of her Uncle, to play the lead in Pakistani film Anokhi (1956). The film was
based on well known English comedy of the time. “Gari ko chalana babu, zara halkey halkey halkey,
zara dil ka jaam na chalkey
” sung by Zubeda Khanum was the popular song from the film which d
id modest to good business in Pakistan....The movie's great music was composed jointly by
Timir Baran (a bengali who came from India for this purporse) and Hassan Latif....

Sheila went back to India and remained as a middle-of-the-range performer in Bombay films. In the
later part of her career, she was reduced to obscure films with titles that sounded like
Jungle King (1959), and The Return of Superman (1960 - one of the last films composed
by Anil Biswas), before she bid adieu to films and disappeared into oblivion.....

Where is Sheila Ramana now Reeth?
Never mind... No use now.. My first oppotunity to see her was in Funtoosh which was released at the Lamington Theatre in Bombay perhaps in 1956. She had lots of oomphs in that movie no doubt and looked a real Sindhi girl. Her role in Naukri opposite Kishore Kumar was reduced to a second fiddle.

Adding some more on Zeenat Aman...

Imran Khan and Zeenat Aman

He was the "Brad Pitt" of Pakistan Cricket and she was the "Angelina Jolie" of 70's and 80's Bollywood cinema. Imran Khan is the most famous cricket player of Pakistan. Not only, was he famous for his cricket but also for his looks and physique among women of all the cricket playing nations.

It was he who brought sex appeal to the game. On the other hand, Zeenat Aman was the sex symbol of the 70’s Bollywood. However, their relationship did not last long.....Apparently he created a controversy in
the eighties by using abusive language against Indian actresses...

i would not compare zeenat aman with angelina jolie. zeenat was a real beauty not a product of media hype, etc. one thing i love about indian actresses is they are naturally pretty and do no need make up.

anyway, i was very impressed with mazhar khan in the movie shaan. he did full justice to rafi sahab's "naam hai abdul mera". i know he married zeenat aman, had some unfortunate kidney illness and so zeenat saved her earnings to get him treated. did not work out and he unfortunately succumbed. then there was a spat with in laws and even zeenat's children did not understand her. i don't want to bring out negativity so just verify this for me: is that zeenat's inlaws were devasted by what happened, placed blame on her (humans must put blame on someone), and then the children were young & emotional were easily swayed and misunderstood zeenat? is that what happened?
jassi
mazhar could not make it in movies,he moved to tv..later in last of 80s he started a movie called gang with jacie, nana, juhi and kumar gaurav..but it got shelved(it was zeenat who spent money on his treatment and also for his directorial debut)..but her in-laws did not understand her...but now her childern are with her...

The last time I had personally seen Mazhar Khan was when he used to stay in the SHAAN building at Yari Road and used to also attend the Friday prayers at the small green mosque there. It was only after he and Zeenat Aman got married that he drew more attention. His role in SHAAN movie was unfortunately reduced to "half" in the sense that his portrayal of a handicapped person and street urchin confined to a small wheel did not do much for him though he had the powerful backing of Mohammed Rafi song: AATE JAATE HUYE MAIN SABB KI KHABAR RAKHTA HOON....

Coming to Zeenat Aman, it is amazing how she could allow herself to be emotionally fleeced by those who got hitched to her. First it was Sanjay Khan. The result was the production of ABDULLAH which did not click at the box office. We can only hazard a guess that Zeenat must have contributed a lot to its production. Their separation was also highlighted by the media. If I remember rightly, there was something written about the 'Slap.' Appears like it was wife-abuse. Anyway... Her alliance with Mazhar Khan too was very painful as has been already mentioned above.

So! It appears that Zeenat Aman is a very soft-hearted person from inside in contrast with her exteriors that shows she is worldly-wise. I only hope she finds the right guy and all the happiness at least that she truly deserves.

To continue with the Slap Story I seem to remember that once Nutan had slapped Sanjeev Kumar during the DEVI days. What about Dilip Kumar and Madhubala? Did something of this kind happened during their court trial before the finalization of the cast for Naya Daur? Of course, the latest to join on board is our current Govinda who slapped someone on the sets to the sadistic delight of the media. closedeyes.gif
