mumbai • After months of speculation the cat is finally out of the bag. Actors Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan got engaged yesterday evening. Abhishek's father and superstar Amitabh Bachchan has confirmed the news to CNN-IBN.

The engagement ceremony took place at Aishwarya's residence here soon after the couple landed from the premiere of their latest film Guru in Toronto and New York.Among those present at the ceremony, which was a closely guarded ceremony, were Amitabh Bachchan, his wife Jaya Bachchan, their close friend and Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh, the parents of Aishwarya, and industrialist Anil Ambani and his wife Tina Ambani.

Sources have told CNN-IBN that the couple is expected to tie the knot shortly. It is believed that Abhishek proposed Aishwarya after the premiere of Guru in New York and the actress accepted the proposal immediately.

Rumour mills were abuzz all through the year regarding their affair first and then about their wedding. In November last year, Aishwarya — accompanied by the Bachchans — emerged from the Sankat Mochan temple sending the media, which had been camping overnight, aflutter.

Soon after the temple visit, speculation was rife that Abhishek and Aishwarya had got married much earlier at the Meenakshi temple in Madurai. But now all speculation can be put to rest and the film industry can gear up for the biggest wedding of Bollywood's first family. [color="black"][/color]

Are the rumours that Aishwarya's quitting true?2007 looks like its going to be a great year for Bollywood stunner Aishwarya Rai - her last film Dhoom 2 was a massive hit and her forthcoming flicks Guru and Jodha Akbar are also expected to do well at the box office.

But the latest rumour is that the 33-year-old beauty doesn't want her film career to continue after her marriage to actor Abhishek Bachchan.

And the eagerly-awaited marriage is not far away - it will take place on February 19 this year, says Indian FM.

By that time Ashutosh Gowariker's feature Jodha Akbar will be complete, where Aishwarya plays lead opposite Hrithik Roshan.

It is still thought that the actress will star in Gaurang Doshi's Happy Birthday after her wedding.

Producer Gaurang Doshi denied the actress has pulled out, saying: "No, Aishwarya hasn't backed out of the project. Nor she has refunded the signing amount.

"Happy Birthday is starting in March and definitely with Aishwarya Rai. There's no truth to this rumour."

Finally Ash-Abhi have come out in the open and publicly accepted their relationship by getting engaged on Sunday. The couple are also celebrating the success of their film Guru together along with their engagement. Amitabh Bachchan has confirmed the news that his son Abhishek has gotten engaged to Aishwarya Rai. The engagement was held at the Bachchan residence ‘Jalsa’ and was a low key affair. Abhishek is supposed to have proposed to Ash after the premiere of Guru in New York and Miss Rai immediately accepted.

The engagement took place immediately after the couple returned from New York, a ‘roka’ and ‘shagun’ ceremony have taken place with bollywood’s first family welcoming their soon to be daughter-in-law. Ash and Abhi have been seeing each other for around a year now and after repeated denials about their relationship they have finally come out in the open with it. The couple have been spotted at several events together and Ash has often been seen with the Bachchan family too . Though a date has not yet been set for the big day between Ash and Abhi, it will in all likelihood be some time soon. There was a formal engagement party held in the evening at the Bachchan residence which saw several big bollywood celebrities and other important guests attending to wish the couple good luck and give them their blessings.

The engagement was held on the auspicious day of ‘Makar Sankranti’ which is considered a good day for Hindus. Ash’s mom and other family members were also present at the event. Amitabh Bachchan along with good friend, politician Amar Singh was seen greeting guests on their arrival. Some of the celebrity guests included director Karan Johar, actress Kirron Kher, industrialist Anil and Tina Ambani etc. While the couple celebrated inside the Bachchan home along with their families and close friends, the scene outside the Jalsa bungalow seemed to be equally festive and jubilant. Hundreds of fans and media personnel had gathered outside the bungalow to catch a glimpse of the most happening couple ‘Ash-Abhi’ and other stars. Well two of bollywood’s most eligible stars will soon no longer be single! But here’s wishing them all the best!

The love story of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai seems straight out of a Bollywood movie.

There is suspense, romance, drama and a bit of humour in their love story. About four years ago, they were dating different peoples and it

hardly looked then that Abhi and Ash would one day be a couple. Today, they are.
When Aishwarya began her acting career in Bollywood, she was asked in an interview who were the people she found most good-looking in Bollywood. She had just one name then : Salman Khan .

It was not long after when she got to act with Salman in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam , and it was during the making of this film Salman and Ash became close to each other. But their relationship was not to last long.

Firstly, Ash’s mother Vrinda did not approve of Salman. Secondly, the actor’s own bratty ways and his reckless lifestyle pushed Ash away from him. Their dirty linen came into public view when Salman barged on the sets of Shahrukh’s movie Chalte Chalte and created a scene with Ash.

It was the last nail in the coffin of Ash-Salman relationship. The actress moved away from Salman and found love in Vivek Oberoi .

On the other hand, Abhishek’s engagement to Karisma Kapoor was broken off and she married a Delhi-based businessman in 2003. Abhi accepted the break-up and sank himself into work.

That was the time when Abhi and Ash had already worked together in two films : Dhai Akshar Prem Ke and Kuch Naa Kaho . They were friends but there was nothing more to their relationship.

Even as Abhishek was single and available in those days, Ash was seeing Vivek. She even offered prayers with him at a temple in South India. But this relationship too was not to last long.

Things began getting sour when Vivek acknowledged in a TV interview that he was seeing Ash, and admitted that marriage was a possibility between them. This allegedly angered Ash who had strictly avoided talking about her personal life in media.

Reports of Ash-Vivek break up surfaced in November 2005 and within weeks it was confirmed that the couple had split.

It is hard to tell when exactly the first sparks of romance began between Ash and Abhishek. Some people say it was during the shooting of the song ‘Kajra Re’ for Bunty Aur Babli . Anyway, seeds of love were sown between them, and Abhi fondly began calling Ash ‘Number Nine’ because she was named the ninth most beautiful woman in the world by a magazine.

By the beginning of 2006, Ash and Abhi romance was already fodder for gossip mills. However, the two never acknowledged their relationship in public.

Then, in February 2006, Amitabh Bachchan ’s brother Ajitabh made a visit to the Bangalore-based astrologer Chandrashekhar Swamy with the horoscopes of Ash and Abhi, thereby fuelling the speculation that marriage was certainly on the cards for the couple.

In the meantime, Ash and Abhi began signing a string of movies together. They signed Umrao Jaan , Dhoom 2 (in which they were not paired) and Mani Ratnam’s Guru .

It was during the making of ‘Guru’ in June 2006, Ash and Abhi became less cautious about being seen together at public places. They visited a cancer hospital, they saw movies together and visited nightclubs in Chennai.

In the months that followed, Ash began to be a part of the Bachchan family, attending dinners and visiting temples with them. In November 2006, just after the release of ‘Dhoom 2’, Ash and Abhi performed a series of pujas at the Kashi Vishwanath temple and Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi.

ENGAGEMENT

It is learnt that Abhishek proposed to Aishwarya after the premiere of ‘Guru’ in Toronto last week and the actress accepted his proposal without a second thought.

After flying back to Mumbai, the couple got engaged on Sunday, Jan 14, at the Bachchans’ residence. Only close friends and relatives from both the families were present at the engagement ceremony.

While there is still no word on when the marriage would be, it is being speculated that Abhi and Ash might tie the knot on February 19, 2007, because it has been declared an auspicious day by their astrologer.

Well that’s her engagement ring that Abhishek slipped into her finger. Sources say that Tina Ambani, a close friend of the Bachchans, selected the solitaire on behalf of the Bachchans from a jewellery store in Breach Candy. Apparently, Tina visited the store just days before the engagement and told the staff that she was buying the diamond ring “for someone else”. The association was solemnized on Sunday evening. "Every father wishes for his children to settle down in life and get domesticated, I am no different. It's an extremely happy moment when children decide to settle down. After my son and Aishwarya returned from Toronto and New York we did a small shagun at her place." The wedding date hasn't been decided yet. "They are all out of town. Abhi and Jaya left this morning for Rajasthan for Goldie's film. Ash is shooting in Karjat for Jodha -Akbar. Audiences who will now go to watch Sanjay Gadhvi's Dhoom 2 in nearby theatres will be utterly disappointed to learn that the daring kissing scene between Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai has been chopped off from the film.

The lip lock had raised eyebrows and sparked off controversies right from the time the film released on 24th November last year. One lawyer had filed a legal suit against Hrithik and Ash. However, no formal action was taken against it by Yash Raj Films. But after the Bachchans formerly announced the engagement of Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, the kissing scene has been chopped off. Sources say that the Bachchans asked Yash Raj Films to chop the scene that shows their to-be daughter-in-law doing a bold smooch. Surprisingly, when director of Dhoom 2, Sanjay Gadhvi, was asked about this issue, he turned a cold shoulder to the media, saying that he would rather not comment on the issue.
