Lata Mangeshkar's recognition as a versatile singer was established in the year '49 with other senior players still in the game. The real onslaught started from 50's onwards when she swept all competition out of sight------except a few of them, like Asha, Geeta, Shamshad etc.

I'm looking for some of her nos. in the 40's-a few of them although I have recorded from SLBC, they are in bad condition. The list follows :

Mohd Bhai...Lambi zoru badi mussibbat...ek thi ladki....the female singer
to me does not appear to be Lata.....it is more like asha...listen to the
pronunciation and the vocal chords carefully....md is vinod...after this
movie...it was asha all the way for him....appears to be a case
of one of the earliest singing by asha...kindly re-confirm the name
of the singer.

According to me its Lata only.. I did not find any trace of Asha.. I may be wrong... but when I checked "Gandhaar", it clearly says lata...

You're right Mahesh it is Asha. The 1st line : chhota baalam badi museebat... may create some confusion but the latter part; ho main haar gayi... and thereafter clearly manifests Asha's voice. Is there any other version?

Balaji..I got the song recorded from 78 rpm record issued originally in 48-49.
There is slight difference in all the songs of this movie...movie version
and record versions..but when I listened to it today i could make out
that it was asha....as it is there is utter confustion in many of the songs
of this movie..if you listen to film version of...dilli se aaya bhai tingu.it
appears to be the voice of geeta roy...but record version gives some
doubt...it appears one or two songs were not originally recorded for
this movie but used by vinod in this movie..particularly the song sung
by zeenat begum.

We had this debate a long time back on the ABF. I too think it is Asha tho like Balaji-ji says chota balam makes one feel it is Lata. Haar gayi is Asha all the way.
VN book says Asha.

Yes Mahesh Bhai, Balaji Bhai and Priya you are all absolutely right it is Asha not Lata, I think also the HMV records are wrong as they show Lata on the records.
