Reeth,

i am glad that you started this thread. smile1.gif

Brando was one of the best performers in Hollywood.
with Godfather, he proved that age hardly mattered to him when he wanted to steal the show.
Jack Nicholson was his neighbour and dear friend till his last breath and took great care of him when he was suffering in last days.

Jack is another great actor. perhaps the best imho. smile.gif
i am looking forward to your post about him. smile1.gif

Sensitive yet masculine , cynical yet romantic, hardbitten yet enigmatic...his various portrayls have
combined to create a larger than life image which remains the archtype of the contemporary Antihero.
He was respected as an actor by all his co stars.

Pity that GODFATHER was banned in India for twelve long years. Firoz Khan came up with a desi version in DHARMATMA in early seventies. As regards THE LAST TANGO IN PARIS I don't think it was released in India intact.

Yes, Dharmatma was of course good. I liked it.
Regarding the Last Tango...this was a movie of pure carnal relationship between the lead actors. Defnitely, it couldn't pass the Censor Board. But having seen it on the video, I think it was a boring movie - as one critic exclaimed: Even with the butter it was a boring movie.

Unfortunately Nasir, she was self destructive and by all accounts naive....quite incapable of handling her huge success and all else that came with it....She was the dumb blonde stereotype in real life too, which led to her personal problems and the final tragedy...her unnatural death.

For me, one of the greatest actors i have ever seen from the yester years is Paul NewMan for his diversified roles, the ease and panache with which he wud carry out his role was fabulous.
Some of his movies like Cool Handluke, The String,The Hustler were a treat to watch.
From the recent periods, i love Tom Hanks. He has really represented the diversity of an actor who can take up any challenging role and carry out in an emotional manner which lefts an indelible expression on one's mind.
Some of his worth watching movies are Philadelphia, Cast Away, The Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, Sleepless in Seattle.

You're right Reeth. I got mixed up between David Lean and David Niven. But the picture is that of Sir Alec Guinness as you stated.
I had seen this movie back in 1957 as a kid at the Regal Cinema, Bombay, and therefore the goofup. By the say this movie was a smash hit in Bombay and ran upto the Silver Jubilee week (all shows). smile.gif

AUDREY HEPBURN indeed had the physique of a ballerina. She seemed to be innocence personified. I had the opportunity of watching her in several movies out of which I remember only THE ROMAN HOLIDAY, WAIT UNTIL DARK, and MY FAIR LADY The last two named movies were releaased at EROS Cinema in Bombay. smile.gif MY FAIR LADY ran over thirty weeks there.

P.S. By the way, wasn't it Audrey who made the citation for India's ace Director Satyajit Ray and presented him with an honorary Academy Award?

My favorite is Vertigo, everytime I watch it I find something different in it. It is wierdly atmospheric, with Jimmy Stewart, one of Hitchcock's favorite lead heroes, imo, in one of his best roles. The stunning opening sequence sets the tone of the movie, fear, obsession, compulsion and destruction... (wow... I seem to have an "ion" complex... biggrin.gif )...

If you have not seen it yet, watch it.... I would love to go back to the experience of watching it the first time...

Mujahid,

Have always intended to see it but never got around to it...Trading Places, I mean. I thought "Tere Mere Sapne" did pretty well at the BO considering it was a completely new cast, including the director. Wasn't this movie and "Maachis" the two movies that gave Chandrachur Singh a brief glimpse of fame? In fact the incredibly silly "Josh" which was a copy of the Holllywood classic "West Side Story", had the director trying to switch the "popular" pairs by casting Chandrachur against Aishwarya Rai and Shahrukh Khan(in a guest appearance?!!!) against Priya Gill or whatever her name was (in a non-existent appearance)... in what he must have imagined was a casting coupe...

By the way Woody Allen payed his tribute to this masterpiece in the "Manhattan Murder Mystery"(I love most of Woody Allen's movies too) ...check it out. And I don't know about you but I kind of like Brian de Palma's films too that are so heavily inspired by Hitchcock, despite the gore and excessive showmanship.
