Full Version: Asha-tai The Great

archimoz
A song from the movie 'Room No. 203'. (1980).

The song has a progressive chord change which happens very subtly in the antara. Hence the mukhda after the first antara goes up by 2 notes than the original. Same for antara # 2.

And then! Asha-tai does the near impossible of doing a reverse chord-change to conclude the song. And this without any prompt from the accompanying orchestra!

Who else would have dared to sing this song?? Lata did something similar in Salil-babu composed bengali number ('jhim chik chak'), but that reverse chord chage was performed only once. asha-tai does it twice.

In some other fora, one encounters a few posts which compare the Mangeshkar sisters. It's a futile exercise as both the sisters have superceded the definitions of greatness.

Regards-Archie.

Absolutely Archie,
As RD had put "if one is Don Bradman another is Garry Sobers" in cricketing language.
Both are great in their own ways.

Dear Ms. Priya,

Glad to know that you liked this number. I remember that Ms. Usha had once uploaded Asha-tai's 'moina re moina' in this forum (music by Salil-babu) and I had gone bleary eyed in admiration of that song.

That's when I had asked her (Ms. Usha) about this song. I have just got it from a friend recently and promptly uploaded the same for other members to enjoy. I'm niether a big collectoer nor a prolific uploader like many greats in HF. I endeavour, in a humble way to share whatever rarities I have with me.

This song of Asha-tai can rank alongside 'daiyya yeh main kahaan aa phansi' in terms of difficulty of rendition.

Interesting-ly, the bengali version of the song was sung by Salil-babu himself as nodody else wanted to attempt this complex tune! Salil-babu had sung is pretty well but who on this earth can match Asha-tai's style of singing??

Salil-babu and Asha-tai would have made a killer-team. (Someting to repent as much as the low output of the Salil-babu-Kishore-da team). Her 'yeh ghunghroo' from 'Jeevan Jyoti' is another beautiful number. I prefer it over the hugely popular bengali version version of Lata-bai: 'o mor maina go...' (I must be in the good books of Nimi because of this - chuckle!).

Does anyone have this song? Would be grateful if it is uploaded.

Meanwhile, another nice number of Salil-babu from 'Maya'.

Regards-Archie.

Two songs from Parivaar. (1956). The opening lines of 'ek do teen' is inspired by Beethoven's 6th Symphony (Pastoral Symphony)

ARCHIEEEEEEEEEEEEE I dunno how I missed this set--saw the songs before it and the ones after but not these!!!! doh.gif Have not heard most of these--am dling now.
BTW the song jhoom le matwale dil is most def a direct copy of an English song maybe by Elvis? Cannot place it--where is Oooni when one needs him? That high ooooooo is exactly like the original and how well Asha takes it--mind blowing!!!!!
Thanks so much for the songs.
Why is it whenever a composer had a truly tough number he rushed to Asha? *sigh*

Just because you brought this up, I condescended to listen to it. Yeah, it did sound familiar.

But then several of her "better" songs are infact copies of great originals. blab.gif

But no way I'm gonna check my Elvis collection just for this! abuse.gif

In other words U Do Not Know!!!
Do U know someone did a copy of Asha's Bangla song in the film Sunny!!! tongue.gif

Dear Priya,

Glad to know that you liked the songs (all songs courtesy Mr. Gautam Chowdhury).

I empathise with your last line-comment, but not perhaps in Salil-babu's case. Lata, too, has sung some mind-bogglingly difficult numbers for him.

Regards-Archie.

P.S. A question to the moderators. Why am I unable to download any song today? Do I need to do something at my end to rectify this? Thanks in advance.

A rare bengali song from the movie 'parabesh' (1980?). Asha-tai has sung the lorie beautifully.

Priya-sis & Unni-saab, I have heard a malayalam version ages ago. The wordings go something like 'o mana thingal.....'. Sung by P Susheela or S Janaki. Can you clarify please?

Regards-Archie.

It is "Omana Thingal Pakshi" sung by Susheela (Quite popular on Aakaashavaani Thiruvanathapuram Aalappuzha, if I may, Priya!). An ethereal song, that floats on and on.
