Film : AAS KA PANCHI

Lyrics : Shailendra , hasrat

Singers : Lata, Subir , Mukesh, Rafi

MUSIC : SHANKAR JAIKISHAN

Storyline :

“Give every man the choice of his work and every woman the choice of her love......”
“Aas ka Panchhi” unfolds on the screen the passion filled tender tale of how a young man dreamt of big
things in life and how the love of a beautiful and young girl inspired and helped him to achieve his
ambitions.
The story centres around three childhood friends, Rajan, Ramesh and Mangal, in search of their
professional careers and, of course, life mates. While Ramesh, who is intelligently guided by his
parents, gets everything rather easily in life (till at the time of the narrative's final denouement he
learns that happiness and love are commodities that are not very easily bought), Rajan has to overcome a
great deal of family prejudices before he can don an army man's uniform and claim the hand of the girl he
loves. The girl's father is his officer; it is easy to win over the girl, but it is more difficult to
persuade the father to give him his daughter's hand, especially since Rajan joins the army as a mere
soldier.
Mangal, who falls in love with a rather plump daughter of a sweet-meat seller, evolves his own formula of
love and happiness, in which the convenience of today is more important than the prospects of tomorrow.
And so the three friends, with their own ideas of love and life, their problems overlapping each other's, go
through their respective lives till the shattering powerful battlefield climax in which Rajan proves that
the only important thing for a man-is to act like a man! And Neena, who had in her own quiet way loved Rajan, looked after the family and prayed for his success, is happy when she sees the frustrated young man change into a confident hero of the battlefield. All the world loves a lover and when the story ends on
a happy note with Rajan and Neena stepping out of their cloudy past into a sun-kissed future, the two
friends Ramesh and Mangal have smiles on their faces.
For, so rare, indeed, and fortunate are the instances in life where a man gets the job he wants-and the girl
gets the man she loves !
And, indeed, equally rare, is a film like “Aas Ka Panchhi” in which you will see and experience all that
you have ever wanted to see and experience in a good motion picture.

THE END

**********************

Aas ka panchi is another classic musical from Shankar jaikishan. This movie also start the assocation of SJ with Jubliee star Rajendra kumar. Needless to tell abt the contribution of SJ in Rajendra kumar's career. one more star begins his journey with the help of SJ's music.
Subir sen is also used in this movie for 2 songs. If iam not wrong it was SJ who had given break (??)to this singer in 1957 film kathputli . This year is the best year of Subir. considering he features in 3-4 SJ movies. I dont know what made SJ again use Subir after 2-4 years???
SJ didnt used hemant after patita- badhsah etc . Subir was supposed to fill that void.

Anway starting off with the first song. All info related with this movie is welcome. so please add whatever u know abt this movie's music and songs.

Could anyone inform me what made SJ choose Subir Sen for the title song and also one other song? Beats me. I do know they had given one popular song to an earlier film KATHPUTLI to him.. Rajendra Kumar and Subir Sen seem strange bedfellows, especially since that very year there was Sasural with the best song of the year sung by Rafi under their direction.

Nasir ji Suber sen had v similiar voice like Hemant kumar. SJ didnt used Hemant kumar after Patita/badhshah. ( u see.......no one ready to share trade secrets.biggrin.gif ) Sharing my view for possible reason of usig Subir.

Amaya chakraborty seems to like Hemant kumar's voice. Amiya had used him in Patita/ Badhshah. so seems this could be the reason he introduced Subir sen in his film katputli. And then again in Apne hue paraye. moreover SJ too seems to liked Hemants voice . this could be the reason for few songs in choti behan, aas ka panchi etc

As far as Rajendra kumar is concerned......I think he was in initial stage of his career. hardly having any choice regarding MD or singers.

Excellent information Sonuji. It was in 1961 I remember that some four to five movies were being screened in various theatres in Bombay at one go. Aas Ka Panchi was running at Novelty; Sasural at Naaz, etc. It was on this occasion that Rajendra Kumar got the title of JUBILEE KUMAR.
I did like Subir Sen's duet with Lata in Chhoti Bahen (ran at Liberty cinema): Mai.n Rangeela Pyar ka Rahi, Joru meri Manzil...... Again, I also liked his Ai Dil Kahan teri Manzil....Na koi deepak hai na koi saaya haim, ....(I dont remember the movie's name at this stage).
How come he vanished later?

Bahut khoob Nasir ji. I had no idea of such things. Five movies se yaad aya.. Abhi Recently DD per program dikhaya gaya.

Wahan per bhi Ramanad Saagar ne yahi baat repeat kari....... he said there were instances when 3-4 dif movies of SJ were running to packed houses.

Nasir ji iam giving m;y view for his exit....I may be wrong also. Subir was copy of Hemant da. After 50s not many MDs were using Hemant da as palyback singer. Most of the sngs of Hemant da were from his own productions. So in a way Hemant Da's voice was not much in demand in 60s. In such circumstances how could we expect his clone to do good ?? and then by 1961 Mukesh was back with full force after few years of low phase. Remind u Subir was mainly used by SJ. when Mukesh/manna were availble as alternative other then Rafi..it was bit diffcult to give songs to subir.

Good analysis my friend regarding Subir Sen's exit. One thing more I would like to add namely, (and it is only my opinion) The early sixties were the years when I believe Rafi Sahaab was at his zenith, culminating in the year 1964 (DOSTI) and the movies of Shammi Kapoor(RAJKUMAR), Biswajit(APRIL FOOL), Joy Mukherjee (Door ki Awaaz), Dilip Kumar(Leader), Rajendra Kumar (Sangam), Sunil Dutt (Beti Bete) and many other movies.
Truly, the Sixties I find the most melodious decade.

Nasir Bhai

The song "Ai Dil Kahan Teri Manzil " was sung by Dwijen Mukherji ( with Lata) and not Subir Sen, for the 1961 movie Maya. Both Dwijen and Subir sounded similar and were sometimes mistaken for Hemant Kumar.

And yes, as a child of the sixties myself, I completely agree that it was a great decade for music, movies etc stc.

Thank you Anil for that pertinent information. I confess I never heard that name: Dwijen Mukherji.
By the way, speaking of the sixties, do you have any other interesting info on songs and movies? It would be great to go down the lane of nostalgia.

If we are discussing Rajendra Kumar, I liked him for several reasons. His admiration for and resemblance to Dilip Kumar. In fact, I read once that he was so glad that he had an opportunity to come on the sets where Dilip Kumar was shooting. This has particular reference to JOGAN (1950). You will see him by Dilip's side.
So JOGAN would be his earliest movie where he can be recognised.

Other notable picture was VACHAN. Remember one great hit song was O BABU EK PAISA DE DE.
Some other movies of the fifties I remember were TALAQ with Kamini Kadam. I liked a Mukesh number: DIL NE USE MAAN LIYA, JISKA ANDAAZ NAYA.
Then there was PATANG. (Listen to the title song).
I also remember MAA BAAP for one song: LE LO LE LO DUAA.N MAA BAAP KI.

He was at his zenith in the sixties at least till 1966, with SANGAM topping all his films. Ah... he was indeed lovable at that time. As a matter of fact he missed out on the Best Actor Award for that movie.
For his role in DIL EK MANDIR, he was highly praised by Dilip Kumar who rued that while he was doing the flamboyant role in Leader, R.Kumar was doing such a good role in the said movie.

Sadly, once the decline started, the never occupied the upper slot. AMAN was disaster; JHUK GAYA AASMAN, AAP AAYE TO BAHAAR AYEE, etc.
