Co-artistes had been kept on their feet by the small wonder. Duets with Noor Jehan were always a tough competition for her male colleagues. Mehdi Hassan, Muneer Hussain, Masood Rana, Rajab Ali and Ahmed Rushdi, would be amazed by the sudden last minute improvisation in the final take. Improvisations that took the song beyond the stipulations of the composition into the realm of eternity. This heightened anticipation gave that added edge to scores of duets sung with other legends.
I am uploding some of her all time favorite duets. Please share your views.

Just heard "mundeya dupatta chhad meraa." I remember an anecdote
related to the song. Actor Nadeem who had a decent voice was asked to
sing this song alongwith Madam. Initially, he refused saying that he
would never be capable enough to sing along with Jehan. However, with
pressure from producer, MD and Madam herself he agreed. But he said
that he could never share a platform with a genius like Noor Jehan,
so Noor Jehan completed the recording and then Nadeem's voice was
recorded and put into the song.
Another interesting comment came from Mehdi Hasan who once said-
"Whenever I sang a duet with Madam I felt ashamed of myself as I
could never match the intensity of her singing, her rendition and her
classical mastery."

Dear Inaamsaab,
U have uploaded such absolutely lovely songs!!!! Ek se badhkar ek--I listen to one entranced and then the next one casts me into a similar spell. Especially the pre-70s ones--Madam's singing is always top-notch but the tunes are so lovely in the earlier songs. I really cannot decide which one I like most. The one which I am humming the most is sharmake humse aankh milane ka shukriya--Madam sounds so sweet in the song--I have only heard the duets U have uploaded but from the little I have heard I feel Salim Raza and Madam are a good duet team--their voices gel well--the song is like a sweet rasgulla, the poetry is good, the tune is one of happy old world romance and the singing is beautiful. Madam's enunciation and stress on the appropriate words is as usual remarkable. The way she sings 'achha' for instance--little things that add so much to a song--I cannot get enough of this song. Goes into my alltime favorites. Khushid Anwar and Rashid Attre spring to mind so readily as fav music directors but Inayat saab too is wonderful. I have liked all his songs that I have heard till now. There is always something that lifts them above the ordinary and makes them special.
The song from Koel, rim jhim rim jhim too is lovely. As is chand tu jab bhi muskurata hai with its soft sadness. Madam seems to lead in her duets always. Look at the difference when she takes the longer hai... and when Mehdi Hassan does it--mind U Mehdi Hassan is one of my favs, I love him in his ghazals esp the ones which are more classical in nature--but with Madam, she always seems the more experienced, the more natural, zyada dard hai unki awaaz main. All my opinion of course.
Ik dil ne kahi ik dil ne suni is also such a beautiful song--again I feel the singing pair is so well suited. Salim Raza's voice is a good foil for Madam's--he is subtle, subdued but very good, she is more flamboyant, with more flair--the consummate artist.
Aik deewane ka is dil ne kaha maan liya is again a nice romantic hummable number. It always seems as if Madam is smiling when she sings happy songs. Maybe my imagination.

)
The classical number is wonderful--thanks so much--I have only heard dil ka diya and ja ja mai tose nahi bolun which fall into the 'classical' category--do U have more of these? Has Madam ever recorded a classical album? Please do ul any more such songs U have. Ek taraf aise gaane aur doosri taraf cabaret--in either extreme Madam sounds perfectly at ease and at home--just shows the kind of singer whe is--who can mould herself into any mood, infact it is not really moulding because that implies effort, Madam's talent and music are so God gifted that whatever the kind of music she just cannot help but do a good job. Matlab saaz acha ho to ko bhi taar chedo khoobsoorat hoga.
This mail is getting looooong--thanks Inaamsaab for all these songs and the last batch too--I loved aap ko bhool jayein and the Nooran song. Was tune pehli baar liya hai recorded from cass? I think it has some slight problem.
BTW the one U uled a few days back--tu jahan kahin bhi jayein--does it not have a solo version too?
Also do u have a good version of kabhi tum bhi humse the ashna--I have a bad copy and then the later Tarannum version.
Are these 2 songs good duets?
Mohabbat mein tere sar ki qasm--Ahmad Rushdi--from Aisa Bhi Hota Hai and
Saathi kaha ho, awaaz to do--Mujeeb Alam from Lakhon Mein Aik.
Do u have them?

Inaam sahab
Thanks would be a very small word to convey the feelings of gratitude in return for the rare and superb gems you have shared with us in this thread. Once again, these songs show how versatile Madam was, she could put soul into any kind of song and often surpassed her contemporaries and colleagues. It was a great pleasure listening to all these numbers and they will resonate in my ears for ages to come.
Thanks a lot

Dear Inaamsaab,
I know U have taken all this effort and time so that i can hear all the NJ songs I have missed out on so far. Jaise Pulkit ne kaha yeh itna bada ehsaan hai aapka ki shukriya bahut chota lagta hai. But thanks anyhow--also for the translation of the naat ba huzoor e sarware sarwaran--The rhyming and poetry seemed beautiful and it is more wonderful now that I know the meaning--the naats apart from being beautifully sung have a soothign quality about them.
We talk of Madam and her music and greatness--just think even after death she has brought together so many people from different countries in a bond of friendship just through her music. That is what immortality is all about!
