Friends,

Maanjhi.. a simple, helpful, dedicated, Guru, highly emotional, philosophical and above all a very strong & skillful silent entity.
A single word, which reflects all these qualities. The only competitive word which can match is ‘God’.

Our philosophers, musicians, poets etc are all seems to be enchanted with ‘Maanjhi’.
But why should I mentioned only about creamy-layer personalities rather I would say even very common people are enchanted with this word.

I remember, during my childhood, while crossing the river in a boat, I use to sit very near to boat-man(Maanjhi) because he only seems to me who is capable enough to save me in case of accident.

Maanjhi-Geet = songs related to maanjhi.

Friends, let’s discuss how Maanjhi songs are used in Hindi film Music.

Very first name comes in mind is of Shri S.D.Burman Sahab.(to me, he always looked like a maanjhi, don’t know why?). We can give full credit to Burman-Da for faming ‘Manjhi’. by composing a ‘Maanjhi’ song in film – Sujata (1959)

Sun Mere Bandhu Re
Sun Mere Mitwaa
Sun M..e..r...e Saa.aa..thi Re….

Afterward Burman-Da composed next film-Bandini(1962)…
& Produced a beatiful ever-fragrant manjhi-flower-
Mere Saajan Hain Us Paar,
Mein Is Paar,
O Mere Manjhi Abki Baar,
Le Chhal Par,
Le Chhal Paa-aaar
Mere Saajan Hain Us Paar.

BTW, according to me all the composed songs of this film were ‘Maanjhi’ songs..

-Ab Ke Baras Bhej Bhaiyya Ko Babul, Saawan Mein Lijo Bulaaye Re
-Jogii Jabse Tu Aayaa Mere Dwaare.
-O Pancchi Pyaare, Saanjh Sakaare
-O Jaane-Wale, Ho Sake To, Lout Ke Aanaaa.
-Mora Gora Ang Laii Le, Mohe Shyam Rang Daii De

I suppose, all of us, at certain time, have been washed-away with Manjhi-Songs. Please pen-down here your such experience.

Usrafianji,

You have started a beautiful topic. Many many thanks for this. Actually this type of Manjhi song really takes us (specially me) to a sentimental world. When I listen this type of music just lagta hai ki 'koi na ho' duniya mein hum kho gaye. Samne padaa hua hai ek na khatam honewala nadi.. Immediately I can remember the following songs..

1. O manjhi re apna kinaara.......[Khushboo](Guru)

2. O....Nadiya Chaley Chaley re..[Safar] (Manna Dey)

3. Manjhi Chal [Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke]

4. Manjhi re Manjhi [Asha]

5. O Manjhi O Manjhi Re Movie Name [Bandhe Hath]

Waiting for more more manjhi songs...

Friends,

When Burman Dada was in his childhood, once he was passing thru fields, he saw a old farmer seated under a tree in his farms who was singing a folk song. The tune was so hunting that it resided in his memory for ever & haunted him till last breath. As per Burman Dada , all his tunes are based on the hunting tune of that old farmer. The shadow of that tune has been reflected in this Manjhi-Geet…

Film – Sujata
Lyrics – Majrooh Sahab
MD & Singer – Burman Dada.

In the song, Bandhi, Mitwaa, Saathi represents God & rests are devotional-wishes.

Great thread USR saab.
There is definitely something special in them, not sure what but I have always loved these maanjhi songs.

Two more that come to mind right now are:

1. MAANJHI NAIYYA DHOONDHE KINARA (Uphaar).
2. AWARA MAANJHI JAAYEGA KAHAN (Pyaasi Shaam).
Pradeep
Nayya Jaldi Le Chalo Mujeh Saiyyan Ke Angana, Jiske Liye Daud Ke Leaayahun mein Kangana.. (Tulsidas)
deewani
And later there was O Majhi Teri Naiya Se Choota Kinara from Aar Paar by RD, sounded very much like his father's. Seems senior Burman was as much into boats as RD was into trains. tongue1.gif

Recently Kailash Kher covered the Bandini one in Sacred Evil (A True Story) soundtrack.

Friends,

Sometime I think that measure boost to philosphy was given by 'Maanjhi' only.
While crossing a river on boat, a thinker may have thought , how to cross this worldy-river, who will be the 'Maanjhi' of that boat which will take me across this worldy-river, & so on... & so on...

Same thing has been expressed by Shailendra-Mahaan in following lyrics and tripple impact was given
by Burman-Dada by composing it & ofcourse by singing it in purely maanjhi-voice....

Maanjhi - Guru
Saajan - God
Desires, temptations, lure, etc have created this river which seems to be impossible to cross.

O Re Maanjhii
O Re Maanjhii
O O Mere Maanjhii
Mere Saajan Hain Us Paar,
Main Man Maar,
Huun Is Paar
O Mere Maanjhii, Abkii Baar,
Le Chal Paar, Le Chal Pa.A.A.Aar
Mere Saajan Hain Us Paar.

Man Kii Kitaab Se Tuu,
Meraa Naam Hii Mitaa Denaa
Gun To Na Thaa Koii Bhii,
Avgun Mere Bhulaa Denaa
Mujhe Aaj Ki Vidaa Kaa.A.A.Aa
Mujhe Aaj Ki Vidaa Kaa Mar Ke Bhii Rehtaa Intazaar
Mere Saajan Hain Us Paar.

Mat Khel
Mat Khel
Mat Khel Jal Jaaegii,
Kahatii Hai Aag Mere Man Kii
Main Bandinii Piyaa Kii Chir Sanginii Huun Saajan Kii
Meraa Khiinchatii Hai Aanchal
Meraa Khiinchatii Hai Aanchal Man Miit Terii Har Pukaar
Mere Saajan Hain Us Paar

O Re Maajhii
O Re Maajhii O O Mere Maajhii

Diwaniji,

Aam Ke Ped Se Aam Hi Lagta Hai.

RDB has feelings as of SDB had. Just remember that single line which RDB has sungs in Balika-Badhue ...

O Manjhi Re....
Jaaaiyo.o.o.o.o Piya.a.a.a.a Ke Desh.

just mind goes blank after hearing it.

We will discuss later on it.

Raw-thoughts or in more cultural way, Vedic-rhyme …
Where do I came from ?
Where will I go ?

Originator of philosophy is - MAANJHI way of living.

Bahut Khoob, Please post these beautiful lyrics.

Yes, Naakhuda can not be other than Maanjhi.

Jiska Nahin Khuda
Uska Hai Nakhuda

Nakhuda, Meri Kashti Ko Sahil Tak Le Aata Hai,
Phir Bhalaa Mujhe,
Tufaanon Se Kya ?
Leheron Se Kya ??
Manzil Se Kya ???

Sufi, Saint, Fakir etc are nothing except Nakhudas.

Friends,

Maanjhi-Geet basically are 'Bhatyaali songs' or vice-versa.

As earlier I told, Hemant-Da has created 2 best Maanjhi-Geet, one is already posted...
...here is the second one...

Film- Rahgir
Lyrics-Gulzar Sahab
MD & Singer - Hemant Manjhi wub.gif

Janam Se Mein Banjaara O Bandhu
Janam Janam Banjaara
Kahin Koii Ghar Na,
Ghat Na Angnaara.

Jahaan Kahin Thehar Gayaa Dil
Hamne Daale Dere Oh.h.h.h
Raat Kahin Namkeen Mili
Tou Mithey Saanjh-Savere Oh.h.h.h
Nagri Chhodi
Saahil Chhodaaaaa
Liyaa Majhdaaraaaaaa
O Bandhu
Kahin Koii Ghar Na,
Ghat Na Angnaara.

Socch Ne Jab Karvat Badli
Souq Ne Par Phailaaye Oh.h.h.h
Aashiyaan Ke Saare Tinkey
Daal Se Udaaaye Oh.h.h.h
Ristey Toddey
Naatey Toddey
Chhoda Kul-Kinaara
O Bandhu
Kahin Koii Ghar Na,
Ghat Na Angnaara.

Janam Se Mein Banjaara O Bandhu
Janam Janam Banjaara
Kahin Koii Ghar Na,
Ghat Na Angnaara.

Sometime I feel, 'Manjhi-Geet' is nothning but a state-of-mind when one feels lost, alone or deafeted by circumstances but not accepting the defeat. Under such cicumstances the thoughts comes out in form of Manjhi-Geet.

Here is a lovely poem by 'Kavi Prqadeep', defining the above state :-

Chal Akelaa,
Chal Akelaa,
Chal Akelaa
Teraa Melaa Peechhe Chhuutaa Raahii Chal Akelaa

Hazaaron Miil Lambe Raaste Tujhako Bulaate
Yahaan Dukhade Sehane Ke Vaaste Tujhako Bulaate
Hai Kaun Saa Vo Insaan Yahaan Pe Jis Ne Dukh Naa Jhelaa
Chal Akelaa,
Chal Akelaa,
Chal Akelaa
Teraa Melaa Peechhe Chhuutaa Raahii Chal Akelaa

Teraa Koi Saath Na De To Tuu Khud Se Preet Jod Le
Bichhaunaa Dharatii Ko Karake Arre Aakaash Odh Le
Puuraa Khel Abhii Jiivan Kaa Tuune Kahaan Hai Khelaa
Chal Akelaa,
Chal Akelaa,
Chal Akelaa
Teraa Melaa Peechhe Chhuutaa Raahii Chal Akelaa
