Remembering Laxmikant ji
Laxmikant S. Kudalkar passed away due to kidney failure on Monday 25th May 1998. He was 62 years old when he passed away.
Laxmikant was born on the Laxmi Poojan day if Diwali in 1937. He spent his childhood amidst dire poverty in the slums of Vile-Parle (E) Mumbai which in those days was comparable to today's Dharavi slums. Due to his father's early death, Laxmikant's academic education ended after passing Standard 4. Laxmikant faced a lot of hardships in this phase. He had to hang on to petty jobs in Mumbai and Pune and has even survived some of those days on plain water, without food ! In Pune city he has even worked as a newspaper delivery boy. It was here that some street-side toy music instruments vendor had who was playing the harmonica (mouth organ, something new then) had an enchanting effect on him. He purchased one of those for six anna (= 37.5 paise). Later in life, he was also impressed by the mandolin, and on his own developed a knack to play the same starting off with his friends' borrowed one. He used to play on street functions and mesmerise people with his art. Laxmikant's father's friend, a musician himself then advised him and his elder brother Shashikant to learn music. Accordingly Laxmikant learnt to play the mandolin and his elder brother learnt to play the tabla. In spite of spending two full years in the company of known mandolin player Hussain Ali, Laxmikant was never really given an opportunity to operationally learn how to play the instrument. However he mastered this art on his own. He began organising and performing in Indian Classical Instrumental Music concerts in order to earn some money. Later Laxmi did get the opportunity to learn the mandolin from known player Bal Mukund Indorker and also to learn the violin from none other than Husnalal of from the popular duo of Music directors Husnalal Bhagatram, especially in the 1940's. All this occurred when Laxmikant was barely 10 years old

Laxmikant was a master in creating melidous , easy to sing tunes. which were
hugely popular. Its well knwn that mostly it was Laxmikant who used to make
Tunes and if required Pyarelal used to do modifications to it.
