Discovery of a master of melody, a melody queen and a lyricist
n issue of Filmfare dated January 3,1958, carries an article by
Dalsukh M. Pancholi. He describes his chance discovery of Master
Ghulam Haider ,Noorjehan and Wali Saheb in it.
excerpts of the article:
" One morning a ten-year-old girl was standing at the enterance and, on
seeing getting me out of my car, she began to sing. Her singing lacked
polish and her movements were clumsy, but her voice had a rare charm-
it held my attention. I took her on and cast her in my three films - "
Gulbakawali" , "Yamlajat" and " Khandaan". The girl was Nurjehan, who
became famous as a singing star and was known as the Nightangle of the
Punjab.
I discovered a music director at a chemist's shop, where I had gone for
some medicinefor a toothache. The owner was a genial man. He not only
applied the medicine himself, but asked me to sit there till I felt
better. He than brought out a harmonuim and began to sing beautiful
songs with his own accompaniment. Soon I was so lost in the music that
I forgot all about my toothache.
I sent for the next dayand ap(p)ointed him as music director on Rs. 150
a month. This was Ghulam Haider who composed hit tunes like " sawan Ke
Nazare Hain Lala Lala !". It was through his efforts that Shamshad
Begum, who is a popular playback singer today, entered films. The first
song she recorded was for " Gulbakawali".
Song-writer Wali was also discovered by me in a similar situation. He
was a junior clerck at a hospital. One day, he came to my office to
collect a bill. I was out at the time. When I returned, I found my
staff eagerly listening to his singing of ghazals of his own composing.
It irritated me at first to see my staff thus occupied, but soon I
myself came under the spell of Wali's poems. That very day I engaged
him to write songs and dialouge for my pictures."
Real great discoveries.
