"My Selection of Tamil Film Songs" - largely from the 60s, which was aired a few weeks ago on HF Radio

The radio program will feature a selection of Tamil songs - largely from the 60s. These are mostly songs which I had heard as a youngster - mostly when we would visit the South every summer, for our holidays. After several rounds of listening - I have selected those which still sound good to my ears !
I have also added a few which have connections with Hindi songs - for the non-Tamilian listeners ( if there will be any !!).

The timing is in the night for India and in the morning for the US

Tamil songs program on HF Radio - my selection of film songs, mainly from the 60s

All in all, 32 of my favourite songs were played in this radio program. Now, these will be up-loaded one by one. During the repeat of the program, some more songs were added in the form of smaller snippets...these additional songs will be uploaded later...after round 1.

I will also add some excerpts from the 'commentary' that accompanied the songs...at the HF Radio Chat Group. Enjoy the songs !!

Singer and Music Director - A M Raja sings this song along with P Susheela

- This film 'Then nilavu' ( Honeymoon ), directed by Sridhar, starred Gemini Ganesan (the father of Rekha..and who was usually a 'romantic' hero) and Vyjayantimala

- A M Raja sang for many Tamil and Telugu films in the late 50s and early 60s and also composed unforgettable tunes for a few films ...but apparently he did not get along too well with the film fraternity and was sidelined in later years. Great loss for Tamil film music.

- Sridhar recalls how A M Raja would not allow a single note to be changed in his compositions for this film. Apparently, Kannadasan had written some great lyrics for a particular song...but Raja wouldn't bend...ultimately the great lyricist himself made way.

This film 'Kalyana parisu' (wedding gift) was produced and directed by Sridhar - his first film - starring Gemini Ganesan, Saroja Devi and Vijayakumari - love triangle. Music of A M Raja

Sridhar promised Raja a break whenever he made his first film..and that's how A M Raja got the opportunity to score music for Tamil films.

He worked with Sridhar on a few more films...making some lovely music ( like the first song on this program )

The music directors Viswanathan and Ramamoorthy were, by far, the most popular composers of those days...a-la the Shankar-Jaikishan combination in Hindi films

Viswanathan Ramamoorthy ( or VR ) composed for a few Hindi films too .....notable among them being the song 'Laut gaya gham ka zamaana' sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata for 'Naya Aadmi' 1956

The humming in this song is in the voice of M S Viswanathan - one of the music directors !
Kannadasan was the leading lyricist of that time...a colourful personality ...and very well-respected by all
This powerful combination of P Susheela, VR and Kannadasan...was to reign for many years

Tune is based on the Hindi song 'Gaya andhera hua ujara' Talat/Lata duet with music of C Ramchandra - from Subah ka tara 1954

Music director for the Tamil song was C Ramchandra himself.....but there was no info on the CD label, and info about the film is also not traceable easily.

This was for 'Vazhkai padagu', a Gemini film (S S Vasan), which was also made simultaneously into Hindi as 'Zindagi' 1964, starring Rajendra Kumar and Vyjayantimala
The corresponding song in Hindi should be 'Muskura laadle, muskura' sung by Manna Dey

Another song from the film 'Anbu engey' - we heard 'Dingiri dingale' from this film earlier

A M Raja sings this duet with Jamuna Rani....it's based on a Hindi song from a film of the same year. Don't know if the producers were linked in any way - that used to happen a lot in those days

The Hindi song is 'Jaan-e-jigar, yun hi agar, hota rahe ishaara tera' sung by Asha and Rafi for Mujrim 1958 starring Shammi Kapoor - music of OPNayyar

Music direction of Veda - this music director's name does seem to crop up in more than one 'inspired' tune, though !!

P B Srinivas sings again for the popular combo of VR-Kannadasan. P B Srinivas (or PBS) was another multi-lingual singer, like P Susheela, singing in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu. He was the voice of Rajkumar, the leading Kannada film star.

I remember this B/W film 'Veerathirumagan' for its duels (sword-fights)...and of course, the nice songs. AVM film starring : C L Anandan, Kumari Chachu, E V Saroja

Film 'Naanum oru penn' 1963 ( means Main bhi ladki hoon ) was an AVM film starring S S Rajendran, Vijaya Kumari, S V Ranga Rao ..and was made into a Hindi version in the next year, 1964.

The Hindi song was 'Chanda se hoga woh pyara, phoolon se hoga woh nyara' - sung by Lata and P B Srinivas ( for Meena Kumari and Dharmendra ).

Same meaning ...in the Tamil song

This song is credited to C Ramchandra......for the film 'Nalla pillai' (year unknown) which was a remake of 'Albela' 1951 in Tamil.
The tune was also a remake of the original Hindi song from Albela - 'Mere dil ki ghadi kare tik tik tik, aur baje raat ke baarah, hai teri yaad ne maara' - lyrics of Rajinder Krishan, sung by Lata and Chitalkar
P Leela accompanies A M Raja in this one. Leela was born in Kerala, but sang in all the south indian languages, and made her mark as a devotional singer.

I remember, when this song was played during the program...and when the name of the hindi song was mentioned...with the words 'baje raat ke baarah'....it was exactly 12 o'clock in the US - prompting some people to think that maybe it was planned that way !! Can't take credit for that, I'm afraid.
