SB Dear

Ye chori chori NJ Forum mein aana aur chupkey chupkey chaley jaana achha nahiin --- share your thoughts and opinions about the songs with all of us please

To say that I am a newcomer wrt NoorjehaN's music is an understatement.
The only reason I got into her songs was thanx to Priya. In her inimitable
style, she was so passionate about NJ, that I got pulled in to see who this
other singer that had captured the Asha devotee's heart.
I had heard NJ's earlier songs i.e. before she went to Pakistan and her
style did not appeal to my tastes. She had a heavier voice, while I had
been raised on a thinner diet of the Maharashtrian variety

However, on listening to her music from the 50s (and Priya's HF radio
presentation was a big help in this), I realized that a lot of NJ's style in
INdia was connected to the style of the composers at the time. Music
styles changed with time even in Pakistan and she had some gorgeous
songs in the 50s. The voice mellowed and sweetened, losing some of its
harsher edges.
And so I discovered beautiful songs like "Ab yahaaN koi nahi koi nahi aayega"
and "Dil ke afsaane zubaanoN tak aa pahunchi" from "Baaji" and the lovely
"Dil ka diya jalaaya maine" (for which I don't know the film or any other info),
and "Kaisa naseeb laayi thhi" (from "Jaan-e-bahaar").
There were other songs that caught my attention, but I don't remember them
cause I am still not comfortable with her music.
Her later work does not appeal to me at all, certainly not anything in the 80s
that I have heard. It lacks the finesse that I like. And the PUnjabi side of
it is also not to my interest although there are some songs that I have liked.
All in all, I have only been exposed to a small subset of her work. So I
don't have opinions. I need to Doobo in her music a lot more to get there,
the way it is with Hindi Film music.
Aapne sawaal kiya to maine bata di.
