Nehle Pe Dehla was previously named on its characters, Jimmy and Johny. The story has been seen many a times on the silverscreen and this one too has nothing novel to offer. The archetypal, humdrum, unexciting masala of two crooks wanting to upstage each other to lay their hands on a booty have been cycled and recycled time and again over the decades.
10 minutes into the film and even a child can predict the script. You definitely don’t need a brain to understand this one.
The film revolves around two thieves, Johny (Sanjay Dutt) and Jimmy (Saif Ali Khan). Johny has a fetish for robbing
expensive watches from showrooms during the day, while Jimmy robs mansions in the wee hours of the morning. One night, they encounter Guptaji [Avtar Gill], who has been killed by the villains [Shakti Kapoor, Mukesh Rishi, Aasif Sheikh and Shiva]. Just like a masala film, the dying man blurts out some words ‘Roxy Hotel’ to push the story further.
As obvious as it seems, our heroes land up at the
hotel giving false stories to Balram [Shakti Kapoor] and get employed as stewards. Meanwhile, Balram’s niece Pooja [Bipasha Basu] and her friend Kim [Kim Sharma] plan to start a hotel in Mauritius and instruct Balram to dispose off the Goa property. But Balram has usurped all the money with the help of three crooks [Mukesh Rishi, Aasif Sheikh and Shiva] and hidden it in Mauritius. Johny and Jimmy get to know Balram’s game plan and demand a share in the booty. Balram calls them to Mauritius. Meanwhile, the three crooks also hatch a plan to eliminate Balram and usurp the booty themselves.
The action shifts to Mauritius. Balram is murdered. Johny and Jimmy are in a fix since only Balram knows where he had hidden the booty.
The film makes a mockery of itself in including scenes which add sad humour. The scene where the three crooks rob the body and take it to a tantrik [Supriya Karnik], who says that the dead body of Balram will only react to a Mauritian song, is irritating to say the least.
There is nothing called logic and narration in this flick. The
writer definitely deserves a trophy for pinning up a tale that is dependent on a dead body. Shakti Kapoor plays the immortal dead body which dances to music, drives a car, completes the formalities in the bank, reaches the place where the booty [Rs. 30 crores] is hidden and even fights the goons in the end. Wait, there’s more…the dead body falls off from the hotel, is thrown in the sea but returns to the shore, it meets with an accident but the body shows no bruises, is even hidden in a refrigerator but it remains normal… now, doesn’t that sound fun…Hahaha!
This film would have certainly be a
blockbuster had it been released in the 1980s but in today’s times this plot will not manage to pull any crowds to the theatres. Except for a few funny moments NPD has nothing much to offer. The music is stale and out of place. Cinematography is fine.
Performance wise, everyone is hammy. Sanjay Dutt has played similar roles in many David Dhawan’s films in the past whereas Saif also makes his first attempt at this non stop nonsense. The actresses Bipasha and Kim are expressionless. Shakti Kapoor is good all throughout.
Watch this one, if you have nothing else to do this Sunday…
