though i couldn't manage to watch it ... ( especially in the last video song, too good video )
didn't like bipasha basu ... anyway, nice movie.

Omkara, watched it last night.

My points: 5/10
IDOL
Name:.....................................Omkaara
Theme/Type............................Jealousy
Rating:....................................** (ok)
Recommandation to watch......no,no, yes

Story:-

A lawyer's girl, dolly ellopes with Omkara.....a dark black politician....., but the girl is really beautiful.....the girl's dad, lawyer, warns this Omkara that if a girl can cheat on his father, she can cheat on anyone ..............this word rings in this Omkara's ears all the time.........Omkara gets a good position in government and he appoints another guy called Kesu as his assistant.........this out rages Langda......he's determined to destroy Omkara's life...........and he does!

My comments:-

I was crazy for this movie because the novel impressed me alot.......however, i didn't find the movie as good as i wanted.......first of all, what bothered me the most was the back ground music was not effective........this was a movie dealing with emotions and jealousy......there should have been great music backgrounds......i didn't get any..............and that really disappointed me...........next, there was not much focus on jealousy.......accordin to the book, Othello spends most of his time worryin about his wife...........however, this Omkara is busy with other business too.....only once in a while he asks saif ali if his wife is not a good woman..............on the other hand, saif's character as Iago was not very effective either......i guess the producer or directory tried to chage Iago's character abit to make it closer to reality................however, that weakened this character.............Iago is very effective in the book...........however, saif's character doesnt' seem to be very jealous and devil like nature...................over all, i was disappointed to see Othello in Omkara movie!

the best parts of the movie:

Bipasha's songs and the way she looks in this movie...........that's it

Indopraba reviews...(Aug-02)IPB Image Gangster husband doubts committed wife's pre-marital relations with his co-gangster. Result of this age-old suspicion wipes out the gang in the end. This Indian picture is a capture of Shakespearean Othello and applied to the daily intra-gang rivalry in the Hindi heartland – Uttar Pradesh.

Ajay Devagan, Shaif Ali Khan and Vivek Oberoi with Kareena Kapoor, Konkana Sen and Bipasha Basu try to give viewers a flavour of violence with a wonderful theme. Naseeruddhin Shah plays the politician role with ease. To enter Lok Sabha with money and muscle as his only credentials, Shah hires Ajay and gang for eliminating his competitor in the party for the parliamentary seat. As expected, Shah enters the portals of parliament. But there is not a single frame of reference to what he does to people as a M.P except his victory procession and blue beacon light fitted vehicle occasionally taking rounds.

The well-advertised movie starts with threat to a man who is waiting for his baraat to start. He was warned not to go ahead with his marriage and allow the bride to marry the gun-wielding guy. A busload of people was terrorized by a gunshot. Finally the groom in waiting takes a moped and informs bride’s family about the mishap. Shah strikes a compromise solution between both sides in his usual style. The movie rolls on with the typical north Indian political conversations with adequate dirty words in circulation. Shaif and Konkona have put in their best cine foot forward. Ajay with an innocent look on his face is an odd selection for this hard role. There is a kind of artificiality in his performance. This movie is not for the faint-hearted viewers who are averse to bloodshed and vulgar vocabulary. But anyone who is interested in understanding the dust and din of Indian politics should watch this highly hyped Bollywood release.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IPB Image This movie surpasses all expectation from hindi movie. Certainly oskar winning movie. Darkness in the movie adds haunting as well as darker emotions of the plot. Saif is the perfect one in the movie. It seems that the whole movie is around him. Fierce, jealous, shrewed, once loyal...and excellent expression of each emotions...Certainly best actor nomination even i say for Oskar.

Plus Points: Direction
story (Othello)
Casting
saif's award winning performance
First time good acting by Karina
And as always a good justice for the character by Ajay Devagan

Minus Points: Slow, but slowness in the movie makes it more haunting and exciting..

manasi bhor reviews...(Aug-01)IPB Image director was successful is bringing about the tragedy of the character of omkara. A rural setup doesnot affect the plot of the original. Use of abusive language is justified n mst be accepted as d need of the film. extreme efforts of the director on the characters especially 'langda tyagi' r worth apreciation. however character of omkara cud have reached xtreme heights. the director seem to b in luv with langda tyagi so much so dat other characters especially desdemona (dolly)remain kind of neglected. Dolly appears to be an angelic character, divine and innocent. origially desdemona is faithful and innocent but with it she is very intelligent. dolly here is just beautiful but appears dum.what qualities in omkara attracts sch beutiful girls is not justified. (however the director shud b given his artistic liberty).Music is good and supports the film well. The film to a general audience may seem to start with a political note and ends with focus on the characters. Here its important to mention that omkara is all about the fall of a great hero due to a single flaw in his character i.e. doubt and insecurity plus complex to a certain extent. Overall a MUST WATCH

Plus Points: Character of langda tyagi (iago)
Good set up
Performances by actors (excluding kareena)
saif and konkona is their best
good supportive music

Minus Points: Lack of focus on the protagonist omkara
Kareena couldnot elevate the character of dolly.cudnt blend well into the setup as well as the character.
Bipasha great efforts with looks to sophisticated and elegant for the role.No fault with bips but wrong choice of d director

A creative and brilliant endeavor miraculously has found its way to our cine screens, in the dried, parched lands of Bollywood. It’s now your turn to come out and support this outstanding attempt... Vox Media reviews...(Jun-08)IPB Image Set in Uttar Pradesh and based on Shakespeare's Othello, the grim love story takes the director's fascination with the bard - his Maqbool was based on Macbeth - one step forward...

The story begins when Omi appoints Kesu and not Langda as his chief lieutenant. Langda's pride is slighted and raging with envy he hatches a plot to falsely implicate Omi's lover Dolly (Kareena), in a love affair with Kesu...

With the unwitting aid of Indu (Konkana), Langda's wife, and the willing help of Raju, a fellow grouch, Langda's plan takes shape and results in tragedy...

Using petty insinuations and lies, Langda keeps poisoning Omi's mind till one day it snaps and Omi goes about tearing up his own safe and secure world...

By the time he realises his folly and the backlash of his actions it is too late...

(Courtesy - hindustantimes.com)

Set in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh against a political backdrop, Omkara is the story of a powerful warrior, who lets his blind passion and unfounded jealousy destroy his and other’s lives...

Omkara (Ajay Devgan) is the chief commander of a gang, and Langda Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan) and Kesu (Vivek Oberoi) are his chief accomplices...

All hell breaks loose when Omi appoints the brave warrior Kesu, instead of Langda. He is spewing venom from within, but manages to maintain a calm and noble outward appearance...

Langda decides to use the love of Omi’s life, Dolly (Kareena Kapoor) as a pawn in his sinister plan. He implicates Dolly and Kesu of having an affair, behind Omi’s back...

The seeds of jealousy have already been sowed in Omi’s mind and his pride has been hurt and his heart has been broken...

And hell hath no fury like a lover who is scorned and so Omi with his own hands manages to destroy his love and loved ones...

But within the ruins of love, there is something more to come? Will there be a silver lining for the doomed Omi or will the black clouds envelop him? (Courtesy - santabanta.com)

NATURE
recently watched few movies ...

1. omkara ( 2006 )

genre: drama/crime/gangster
rating: 7/10 ( imdb rating: 8.3/10 (183 votes) )
director: vishal bharadwaj
writing credits: vishal bharadwaj (screenplay), Robin Bhatt
story: as khobi, the best movie journalist already said it all, but i will try to type few lines ...

kareena ( dolly ) loves ajay devgan ( omkara, omi ). omi's group stopped her marriage with another
man and then ajay-kareena mariage follows ... in the middle, ajay gave high position to vivek oberoi ( kesu )
and not to saif ali khan ( langdaa tyagi ), so saif with the man ( to whom dolly was about to marry ) take the
revenge ... they creates some misunderstanding between dolly and omi saying dolly loves kesu ...
at the end, ajay kills dolly. when konkona sen sharma ( indu ) tells the truth, ajay kills himself. indu kills
langdaa tyagi and then kills herself ... at the end, two people remain alive. kesu ( vivek oberoi ) and
bipasha basu ( billo ), who were in love already ...
--------------------------- From Wikipedia ---------------------------------
Omkara or Omi (Ajay Devgan) is initially the 'General' or enforcer of a political party, leading a group which
includes the crafty Langda Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan) and the dynamic Kesu (Vivek Oberoi) amongst his chief
cohorts. The story begins when Omi appoints Kesu and not Langda as his replacement as 'General' once he
enters politics himself. Langda's pride is slighted and raging with envy he hatches a plot to falsely implicate
Omi's beautiful lover Dolly (Kareena Kapoor), in a love affair with Omi's “favorite lieutenant”, Kesu. With the
unwitting aid of Indu (Konkona Sen Sharma), Langda's wife, and the willing help of Raju, a fellow grouch,
Langda's plan takes shape and results in horrific tragedy. Using petty insinuations and lies, Langda keeps
poisoning Omi's mind till one day it snaps and Omi goes about tearing up his own safe and secure world. By
the time he realizes what he has done and the backlash of his actions it is too late.

But like all love stories which never really end…out of the ashes of this one too comes a twist. Omkara's dark
love for Dolly, Dolly's unquestioning love for Omi, Langda's warped loyalty and jealousy for Omi, the vibrant
Kesu's unswerving devotion to Omi - all leading up to a dark tragedy where Omi finally realizes what he has
done.
-------------------------------------
the music is good, composed by vishal bharadwaj himself. vishal bharadwaj, another good job
after maqbool which was again based on william shakespeare's machbeth ....
ajay devgan always gives the best performance, but saif ali khan goes ahead and shows his acting
skills ... i think the people who got disapointed by his national award in hum tum, will be happy now
cause saif ali khan's performance was ulti ....
he deserves some award this time i guess ... ( i loved his cloth and shoe )

imdb rating: 4.6/10 (5,512 votes)
director: tinto brass
writting credits: gore vidal (screenplay) and franco rossellini (dialogue) (1984 version)

i was willing to know about this roman emperor, but the movie was made in a different style that you may
get disappointed ... so watch it only when you are ready to accept the unexpected ....
------------------- From IMDB -------------------------
story: The rise and fall of the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula, showing the violent methods that he employs
to gain the throne, and the subsequent insanity of his reign - he gives his horse political office and humiliates
and executes anyone who even slightly displeases him. He also sleeps with his sister, organises elaborate
orgies and embarks on a fruitless invasion of England before meeting an appropriate end. There are various
versions of the film, ranging from the heavily- truncated 90-minute version to the legendary 160-minute
hardcore version which leaves nothing to the imagination (though the hardcore scenes were inserted later and
do not involve the main cast members).

Us patthar ko bhi Bhagwaan kaa roop maan liyaa jaataa hai )

The place which makes you remember the God
That place is called "Aura"

Raju is a railway guide who befriends Rosie, a neglected wife of an archeologist Marco. Rosie has a passion
for dancing which Marco doesn't approve of. Rosie, encouraged by Raju, decides to follow her dreams and
walks out on her husband. Raju becomes her stage manager and soon with the help of Raju's marketing tactics,
Rosie becomes a successful dancer. But a man should not live off a woman. On the other hand, what if she is
successful only because of that man? The relationship between Raju and Rosie is strained. Marco reappears
and Raju inadvertently gets involved in a case of forgery and gets a six-month sentence. After completing the
sentence, Raju is passing through a village when he is mistaken for a sadhu (a spiritual guru). He doesn't mind
this mistake and makes the village temple his home. There is a famine in the village and Swami Raju, like the
sadhu in one of his stories that he used to narrate to the villagers, is expected to keep a fast to get the rains.
And he does go on a fast. 'Can there be any connection between one man's hunger and the rains?' 'Is there
someone up there and does he listen to you'? He is undergoing a spiritual transformation and the place has
become a shrine. 'Will it rain?' Well, the villagers have faith in him and he has faith in their faith. And it does
rain. But Raju has realized the Brahman (universal soul) by then and has merged into it. Nothing exists but 'me'.
Indian philosophy at its most entertaining form.

K does not imply a HIT, 12 August 2006

If the thought is that the title should start with 'K' for a hit then its wrong. You have a decent story, good star cast, great banner and then how come you end with a crap like KANK. I think it was sheer hard work.

Cheap comedy, overacting, dragging....I think in future such kind of movies should have Money-back Guarantee. It is just the idea on which the movie was based that I liked and was generous to vote a 1 for it. The music was good so another 1 point for it making it a total of 2/10.

Some of the scenes are just horrible and cheap. It was the most hyped movie of the year signifying how people were eagerly waiting for it, expecting it to be something classic but I must say it is a blunder.

I think it is the biggest flop of the year.

After Kaal and KANK I think the 'K' myth is also going to end and we will not see Karan's movies having title beginning with 'K'.

Suggestion : Please don't waste your time and money on this.

By Taran Adarsh, August 9, 2006 - 14:35 IST

IPB Image The wait has finally ended!

KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA has generated tremendous heat within and outside the film industry. It's not the star cast alone that has resulted in unparalleled, unmatched and unprecedented craze for the film. It's also the person seated on the director's chair that makes KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA special. Very special.

With KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM, his directorial accomplishments, Karan Johar has set such high standards that an all-important question crosses your mind as you walk into the screening: Will Karan surpass his own achievements with KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA?

Book Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna movie tickets online KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA is also an acid test for Karan for yet another reason. It's the first time that Karan has changed tracks. Agreed, the supremely talented director has tackled romance and relationships in the past, but KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA goes a step further. It takes a bold look at relationships and makes an equally bold statement on the institution of marriage.

Just don't expect KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA to be a typical candyfloss entertainer. Or an archetypal fare that Bollywood is known for. In those 3.06 hours/22 reels, Karan packs in some solid stuff. And the conclusion to the story is bound to hit the orthodox elements hard. A film like KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA is sure to have its share of advocates and adversaries no doubt, but it's a film that has the courage to say what it believes in.

IPB Image There are bound to be comparisons with films of similar genre. But let's put certain myths to rest at the very outset. The story revolves around two couples, but it's not CLOSER [Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Clive Owen], it's not SILSILA either. The speculation should end there. Karan's take on relationships is fresh, bold and innovative. It takes you by surprise. It shocks you as well. And it's also trend-setting.

Frankly, a film like KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA is akin to a big gamble. The subject matter has to be treated cautiously and delicately, or else it can boomerang badly. It might even hurt the sensibilities if entrusted in wrong hands. But Karan's skilled directorial abilities take the film to a different level altogether. The film charters a novel path as it progresses and gets bolder gradually.

In a nutshell, KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA bears the unmistakable stamp of a genius -- Karan Johar. The master storyteller only polishes his skills further, proving yet again that he's a forward-thinker and also, a progressive storyteller.

KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA narrates the story of two families -- Sarans and Talwars -- both not connected to one another. But circumstances bring them together. Dev Saran [Shah Rukh Khan] has an uneasy and troubled relationship with his wife Rhea [Preity Zinta] and son Arjun [child artist Ahsaas]. He resents his wife's growing success and in the process, ends up turning all his anger towards his loved ones.

IPB Image Maya Talwar's [Rani Mukherji] relationship with her husband Rishi [Abhishek Bachchan] is layered with a lot of self-doubt and question. She is unable to whip up enough passion for Rishi and is disappointed that her love for him does not match her own expectations of what it ought to be. This dilemma pulls her further apart from him, thereby causing a strain on their marital life.

One fine day, Dev and Maya's path cross each other…

KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA starts like a nice romantic drama, with Abhishek getting married to his childhood sweetheart and SRK talking to his wife about the $ 5 million deal after he has won a game of soccer. But minutes later, the film does a 180-degree turn and establishes the friction between the two couples.

The tension between the couples surfaces gradually, but reaches the crescendo 20 minutes before intermission. The spat between SRK and Preity on one hand [Preity: “I wear the pants in this house”], followed by the heated argument between Abhishek and Rani [Abhishek: “You can't even bear a child”] is amongst the most remarkable portions in the film. These sequences hit you like a ton of bricks!

IPB Image It's not that the first half is laced with tense-filled moments. In fact, the first hour-and-a-half has light portions in abundance. Amitabh Bachchan's philandering lifestyle provides ample moments of laughter and of course, eye-candy, what with some gorgeous firang babes jumping out of the closet.

In the post-interval portions, infidelities occur, betrayals are discovered and the couples' worlds go upside down. The sequence at the dinner [Sr. Bachchan hosts a sit-down dinner on Kiron Kher's birthday], when SRK expresses his feelings, or when SRK opens up to Preity and Rani to Abhishek about the affairs are master strokes from the writing and execution point of view. Note another scene: SRK waiting with a bouquet of roses for Rani and by a sheer coincidence, Preity walks in at that time at the signal crossing. This sequence [it depends on treatment alone] deserves distinction marks.

The end is powerful, but disturbing. Disturbing for those who believe in the age-old traditions. The film moves about in a serpentine fashion. Just when you thought that the couples have decided to go separate ways, there's another twist in the tale and yet another, in the end.

Karan Johar takes colossal strides as a storyteller. Films like K.K.H.H. and K.K.K.G. were the tip of the iceberg. Karan's take on relationships and marriages is refreshingly different because there's tremendous identification with the characters. You see it happening all around you these days. Technically too, this is Karan's finest work to date; he balances style and substance beautifully.

IPB Image KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA is not a date film and the writers [Karan Johar, Shibani Bathija] spell it out at the very outset. The screenplay balances the two extremes -- light moments and dollops of emotions -- with amazing ease. The relationship between the couples or even those between the parent and child [the Bachchans] is delicately handled. If there are moments that move you to tears, there are ample moments that bring a smile to your face as well. Another noteworthy aspect is its forthright dialogues [Niranjan Iyengar]. The lines sound straight of life and there also exist a host of interesting observations. Yes, the film is talky, but in a smart way. You never feel that the characters are talking to hear their own words or to fill up screen time.

Anil Mehta's cinematography is awesome. The film has been filmed in New York and the lensman captures the various seasons and colors with gusto. The outcome is easily comparable to the best in Hollywood. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is melodious. 'Mitwa', 'Rock N Roll Soniye' and 'Where's The Party Tonite' appeal also due to the vibrant choreography [Farah Khan]. The styling and the production values are topnotch. Editing could be tighter. A bit of trimming, in the first half mainly, would only sparkle the film further.

In KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA, the actors get a chance to shine and no one shines brighter than Shah Rukh Khan. Let's just state one thing here: This is SRK's finest work after D.D.L.J. His sequences with Preity specifically, when the couple has their spats, or in the climax, when he just stares at Rani from inside the train, proves that he's undoubtedly the best in the business. The ferocity with which he delivers his lines and the restless energy he imparts to his character electrifies every scene that he's in.

IPB Image Rani is remarkable yet again. In fact, if you consider BLACK to be her most memorable performance so far, then watch her in KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA. This surpasses her work in BLACK or VEER-ZAARA and PAHELI. Her makeup as well as her overall appearance is tremendous. She's never looked as good before!

It would be unfair to describe either Abhishek Bachchan or Preity Zinta's performances as 'lesser'. Abhishek is brilliant, especially when he gets serious towards the end. His penultimate sequence, when he gives a golden advice to Rani, is outstanding. Preity not only looks gorgeous, but the dedication to her role shows at vital points. Her penultimate scene with Rani, when she confronts her at the marriage reception, is fabulous.

Amitabh Bachchan is in superb form. The naughty streak that he displays soon disappears in the second half, when he realizes that something is amiss. In fact, his expressions at the dinner first and also in the hospital only reiterates the fact that he's an icon. Kirron Kher excels in a brief but significant role. Arjun Rampal looks perfect for the part. Kajol and John Abraham [both appear in songs] add to the glamour quotient. Child artist Ahsaas looks cute and acts well.

On the whole, KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA is an outstanding film from the writing, performance and execution point of view. It has style, substance, it takes challenges and doesn't follow formulas -- and that is its biggest strength. At the box-office, the film will embark on a hurricane-like start, establishing new records in days to come. The first weekend will be superb, while the weekdays [15th and 16th August are also holidays] will result in a record-shattering first week billing. With no opposition in sight for the next few weeks, KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA will have a dream run at the box-office. Its business in Overseas will also be remarkable. Has the potential to prove the biggest money spinner in this territory.

still about KANK from smashits:

---------------------------------------

DON'T LEAVE YOUR MARRIAGE UNATTENDED

By Satyajit - Eye TV India Bureau

Critic's I-view

click for larger viewIPB ImageConjugal bliss is Mother Nature's divine gift to mankind, but how many of us cherish and make the most of it? The deep rooted marital relationships are driven by hardcore rules and regulations of society but love has no precincts, rituals or boundaries. Why do small quarrels, confrontations and unavoidable barbs between the spouses result in venomous confrontations and then follow in separations? Does the relationship lack the eternal bond of togetherness or the comfort level or the gratification level? Has the compassion between them decimated to all-time low? What relevant and important part do elders play in rejuvenating these beleaguered relationships? These are some of the realistic factors the much awaited 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' projects.

The film is primarily conceptualized on the circumstantial repercussions of events when the protagonist is "head over heels" in love with his soul-mate after being married. Karan's tryst with perplexed human emotions continues with 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' ('KANK') where the meek and unexpressive husband (Shah Rukh Khan) suffers from inferiority complex and shelters in the arms of mentally perturbed lovable wife (Rani Mukherjee). Unlike previous family tearjerkers, this film has modern and upbeat outlook with realistic characters infused in complex love saga. The film comes out with statutory warning "Do Not Leave Your Marriage Unattended" and it collages with every character of the film.

click for larger viewIPB ImageAccording to filmmaker Karan Johar, he has plagiarized these realistic and conceptual facts of life after scrutinizing falling success rate of modern day marriages. The film promises to be a solution of these problems but does it explain broken relationships? The answer is purely individual and situational and may vary from person to person. It may strike a blow to orthodox minds and age-old rituals but works mechanically with the present state of youth genre. An average Indian audience may find the concept alien for its different treatment.

click for larger viewIPB ImageWhether it's a tomboyish infatuation of love struck girl ('Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'), bondage of united family ('Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum') or the eternal love and sacrifice of a dying lover ('Kal Ho Na Ho'), Karan Johar has triumphed them all and returns with much more mature subject with 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna'. The magnanimous success of his earlier releases like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho' makes him the most priceless directorial prodigy of business. He returns with the finest line-up of stars to make it the most awaited mega event of the year. Bollywood has glorious past of family oriented melodramatic flicks ('Sangam', 'Tere Mere Sapne', 'Pyar Jhukta Nahin') in the past. However, they are handful in present scenario.

click for larger viewIPB ImageThere is a load of factors that decides the final outcome of the family entertaining endeavors and this is where "Yash Raj Banner" and "Dharma Productions" have excelled. The immaculate "treatment", flawless presentation, impressive performance, melodious and foot-tapping music and fine craftsmanship of cinematography and chorography are all that make it different from others. 'KANK' delivers all with grace and generosity and makes the film worth its gigantic media hype . Candy floss romance, trendy outfits, skyscraping and visually spectacle locations, funky music and thematically heart-piercing performance from the lead actors makes it a "must see show".

click for larger viewIPB Image'KANK' is an emotional confrontation saga of two families - Sarans and Talwars, driven by destiny and not by relationships. Dev Saran (Shah Rukh Khan), an emotional, self expecting joyful youth who loves to live, work and enjoy his life. Dev's better half Rhea (Preity Zinta) is sassy, ambitious and trendy career woman who has skyscraping ambitions and the skills to achieve it. Dev, an aspiring footballer, signs a deal of five million dollars and Rhea's talent places her in top slot of her company. Kamaljit Saran (Kiran Kher), Dev's mother is a lovable woman and understands his son better than others. The couple has an adorable kid -- Arjun (Master Ahsaas) who prefers violin over football. Samarjit Singh alias Sam (Amitabh Bachchan) is an enigmatic entrepreneur whose philandering habits show his lively and jovial attitude towards life. Rishi Talwar (Abhishek Bachchan), son of Sam, is hardcore party animal with high profile business. Maya (Rani Mukherjee), Rishi's wife, is a sensitive, homely girl who aspires for true love and happiness in life. On one fateful day, Maya and Dev meet and it's a day of Maya's wedding. It turns out into an interesting conversation about love, relationship and marriage but ill luck strikes them. Dev meets an accident and is handicapped whereas Maya marries Rishi out of compromise. After four years they meet again with estranged marital relationships. Rhea's growing success makes Dev envious. Depression and frustration make Dev a pessimist. The feeling of being a loser haunts him every time. On the other side, Maya has inferiority complex of not conceiving child. Rishi's pleasant nature pacifies but she fails to react to his advances. The unpleasantness develops between them and leads to unwanted arguments. Dev and Maya decide to sort out the matter by being each other's best buddy. In hot pursuit to rejuvenate their shackled marriage life they develop an eternal bond of love and togetherness between them. The climax shows them in a whirlpool of emotions where they have to choose between love and a "compromised" life partner.

click for larger viewIPB ImageIt may sound ridiculous to an average viewer that the director has tried to narrate the story from the a pessimist attitude. The concept sounds too westernized and will be difficult to digest for Indian audiences. Karan Johar's concept of plagiarizing the concept in New York speaks volume of technical vision, but the theme of the film will sound alien to many. Shibahni Bathija's co-scripting the film has been innovative and shows inhibited shades of traumatized marital relations.

Niranjan Iyenger's dialogues are witty, whimsical and show their class in developing characters in the film. Big B's philandering acts, his one-liners, Shah Rukh's initial confrontation with Rani, Abhishek's outburst at Rani and Big B's speech over the long lost moments of married life are the striking features of the writing work.

Cinematography by Anil Mehta is brilliant at many places and shows the natural and urban beauty of New York. It scores maximum in soundtracks "Rock "N" Roll Soniye", "Mitwa" and "Tum Hi Dekho Na". Farah Khan's finely crafted chorography is an added catalyst, especially in "Mitwa" it captures the emotional moments of Shah Rukh and Rani that form the crux of the story.

Shanker Ehsaan Loy deliver their best musical soundtracks of the year with "Mitwa" being the best of the lot. The background score works with the "tonality" of the script and each soundtrack has relevance with the script. The title track and "Tum Hi Dekho Na" evokes an aura of serenity on screen that was earlier witnessed in soundtracks of 'Kal Ho Na Ho'.

click for larger viewIPB Image'KANK' has been garnished with the best of acting talents available in the film industry. Shah Rukh Khan has the major role to play and he delivers it with panache. The sorrowful outburst of his being handicapped, accepting love for Rani, resentment with Preity and confrontation with Big B show his versatility as an actor. Abhishek Bachchan matures as an actor with some fine sequences -- his love for philandering father, compassion with Rani and finally his separation with Rani. Legendary Amitabh Bachchan plays the naughtiest, most wicked and the honest character and his face language delivers it all. The witty one-liners with Kiran Kher, conversation at the dinner table and the death scene speak of his flawless acting intellect.

click for larger viewIPB ImageRani Mukherjee's acting prowess is immaculate throughout the film and shows her command over her emotions and expressions. The perfect timing in the emotional scenes is mind-blowing and gives her edge over her competitors. The actresses have many dimensions to display and she lives up to the monumental expectations. Mickey Contractor's finely garnished make-up is an added factor to her physical grace and charm. She leads the show from the front and gives her best performance of the year. Preity Zinta's upbeat attire of successful woman fits into her body language perfectly. The actress needs no introduction as she has already been an acting icon in films like 'Veer Zara' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho'. Manish Malhotra's trendy and sassy outfits are class apart and depict the designer's outstanding vision. Rani's ethnic wears, Preity's urbanized outfits, Shah Rukh's trendy jackets, Amitabh's fashionable suits and Abhishek's connoisseur looks build the characters well. The designer has his best work in recent times and should be applauded for this.

click for larger viewIPB ImageIt may sound boring and irritable for movie buffs to visualize realistic concepts on commercial mainstream cinema format for three hours plus. But Karan Johar's intellect of balancing style with substance speaks volume of scripting, directorial and creative genius. The extra long length of the film (22 reels) may be a discouraging factor for the film's prospects; otherwise the film promises to be visually spectacle. The slow, unorthodox and melodramatic treatment might lead to a difference of opinion but it will have the biggest opening of the year. It will be best in multiplexes and overseas and will have mixed response in the interiors.

All sites or critics give a biased view in one form or other, the best is to c the film and be a critic yrself though that 2 is going 2 b one's op. but Critics are given a freebie n if they slash the film like they do in US they don't get a chance to b part of the"CAMP" whereas in US it is different they have to have media present for previews. Whether the film gets slashed or not. In our des it works differently. sad.gif

i agree here, we gotta watch it anyways.....whether bakwas or not laugh.gif.........the thing is , we our selves, have different views......for me Omkaara is a flop...........caoz i've read the novel......i've watched two version hollywood movies..........and this was my fourth try on Othello, therefore, it did not match my taste at all...............however, majority view on a movie can be correct, that's how a movie is being counted as a winner in award shows wink.gif

Sowmya Venkatesh reviews...(Jul-25)IPB Image Excellent movie.Shahid is a good actor like his father.Shahid and kareena makes an excellent pair.Neha dhupia is fine but needs more training.Dancing both kareena and shahid needs improvement.

Plus Points: Excellent comedy.Combination is good.

Minus Points: Music is o.k.Not up to the mark.

---------------------

mohanraaj reviews...(Jul-21)IPB Image It was the best movie to watch the family.Nowadays many films are so glamour. But it is fun mixed movie to watch.

Plus Points: All sceans in the film.

Minus Points: To my knowledge the was no minus.

--------------------------

BabyPhat reviews...(Jun-26)IPB Image Kareena Kapoor is one of my fave actresses but as a hearing impaired person who communicates both orally and through sign language, I really really HATED how they kept calling deaf or those who are mute "dumb" and made the disabled seem really awful life to live. I had many proposals and never "suffered" like that girl. I was hoping it to be like that movie "Black" that shows disabled can do anything. Overall, I did like the sign language and the dancing. My fave scene was the engagement, I love the beautiful clothings. Deaf can do anything except hear. I am just GLAD they didnt try to do a "cure" that she will suddenly be able to talk. Hopefully there will be more movies with deaf characters.

---------------------------

alexander reviews...(Jun-26)IPB Image What happens when Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav get space in a movie, a riot of laughter! The first half of the movie is full of comic moments from these two. The second half is quite a drag, but even there Paresh and Rajpal managed to sprinkle some fun moments.

IMO the best thing about the movie is that the comedy, for most part, is clean and spontaneous.

Om Puri also packs some punch in the movie. It was interesting to watch Kareena in a role where she doesn't get anything to say. And she is "well-dressed" in most of the parts, perhaps that's what makes her look pretty.

Overall a good movie to watch!

Plus Points: - Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav's comedy

Minus Points: - Shahid Kapur's acting in the first half
- Second half & the climax

----------------------------------------

only god knows reviews...(Aug-03)IPB Image One of the worst Bollywood cinemas I have ever seen.
Karina F. Langoor and her fruity boyfriend did the most pathetic depiction of Dumb and Deaf, one is likely to see in real life. Paresh Rawal did his bit of acting by shouting out of his throat (which was supposed to be comedy ….). It would be nice to see him in a role of Dumb for a change. This stage actor thinks that shouting is seriously funny.
Others were pathetic as usual.

Plus Points: Can not find one.

Minus Points: World would be better place for dumb and deaf without this movie.---------------------
