doh.gif Wonder which mean mind generated this idea that I am musically limited and ignorant. A name comes to mind. mad.gif Then there are the creatures who call me frog. abuse.gif

Actually like so many things in my life, the credit goes to Asha!!! tongue1.gif As U know I wanna hear everything she ever sang. So when a friend told me he had some of her Bangla songs, I asked for mp3s. He said the cd had space left and so added several compilations. And another cd! So I got a lot of Dada Burman's music (which I love), Shyamal Mitra, Lataji, Ashaji, Geetaji, Guru, Hemantda, Mannada, Aarti M, many Bangla singers whom I do not really remember by name--Pratima someone, Dhananjay someone? Then compilations of mds--Salilda, SDB, Sudhindas Gupta, songs from satyajit Ray films and so on. I have a reasonable collection. True, I do not listen to all always but some of the songs U played were known to me, so presume I have them. smile1.gif
Dada Burman ko sunne ka ek aur reason hai--the owner and brain behind the SDB site (have U seen it) is my friend. She used to make me listen to quite a bit on yahoogrps. smile1.gif

3 people made this site. One is my friend Ritu Chandra--an SDB maniacal fan and also that of Dev Anand. doh.gif

BTW did U play na jao saiyyan's HK version this morn? Found that on my HDD.

Thanks J !!

Yes, though it sounds easy...i find that a lot of effort does go into putting together a program. The choosing of songs is so difficult ( esp the leaving out bit !! ). And then I need to have them in a proper order so that they blend well together. Then there are the daily changes as I keep reviewing the list.....and everytime the order has to be re-shuffled if one slow song is removed and a faster one inserted etc. Plus male and female songs have to be distributed uniformly throughout the program etc etc. Being a fussy virgo doesn;t help !! I listen to the sequence several times before finalising ! Then there is the 'information' bit which has to be kept ready.

This time i had the added burden of making some translations......i couldn't complete them for all songs..but even then it was a challenge for some songs ! Needless to say, that this was done mainly for YOU...since you had expressed some reservation during our chats..about listening to songs without understanding the lyrics !! However, I do hope that this program has at least given you some confidence that you can actually enjoy music in a language that you don;'t know !!

Looking forward to having you around during the repeat !!

Yes, I did ..that was the first Hemanta song on the program....and I also mentioned that it took me a long time to realise that the two songs had the same tune...simply because i like the Hemanta version so much, while i kinda disliked the Sahib bibi song !!

Ya I remember U saying U did not like the SBG one now. Why? I love that song. cry.gif And I loved the film. cry.gif Poor poor thing. cry.gif

OK, here is the Hemantda song. smile1.gif

I don;t know why i don;t like that SBG song much...maybe bcos it's such a nasal, tearful song....perhaps it fits the film,..i can't say....i haven;t seen it... not too keen on that sad, crying, 'poor thing' type of stuff !

Priya
U have never known absolute desperation, Sri and hopeless longing love? cry.gif

U speak like a man. sad1.gif I do not like our filmi melodrama but this was a good film I feel. As for MK, she was drunk in the song. All the more reason for the letting go of emotions.

Not that U have to like the song. biggrin.gif But has always been one of my favs even as a kid before I could even begin to relate with any of it or had seen the film.

T, U have to know there are people who feel that way. Natures differ.
Talaikya
Yes Priye, I know that natures differ. I am impatient na tongue1.gif can't take too much self pity! I like "Koi door se awaz de chale aao" and "Piya aiso jiya mein" much better than "Na jao saiyyan". I mean if the guy isn't staying well kick him and move on... but then it does fit in the movie. I must watch it again, I wonder if I'd still like the movie as much as I'd liked it then, if it'd still hold me smile1.gif
sri
Priya - i can understand what you are saying here

Surely, some people will like the stuff..........i may also like it on some obscure day if i'm in the mood for it !! And if the film is well made ...then it becomes easier to go through these kinda stories.

But, sometimes, even to motivate oneself to see a depressing film is difficult for some people ...like yours truly !!

I like Guru Dutt a lot though..including his sad movies like Pyaasa, Kaagaz ke phool....so SBG should be on the cards sometime in the future.....but not right now !!

Sri

Priya
I like sad movies and comdey--if well made and not contrived.
Unlike Jags and U, I can identify with MK in the movie. I am a gloomy dark soul. biggrin.gif

I actually found Kagaz ke Phool much more haunting and depressing. sad1.gif

Another interesting addition has been planned on this thread :

For some of the Bengali songs listed above, there are Hindi versions, which were , typically, released subsequently - sometimes sung by different singers. Jagrati, the great collector (also known as Talaikya), has graciously volunteered to give us the Hindi versions corresponding to the Bengali numbers - so that all those interested can get to hear both versions and observe the similarities/ differences etc.

Why do pots insist on calling the kettle black? sad1.gif I'll accept the good quality and well tagged, especially the latter considering the amount of time I spend on it biggrin.gif. No greatness here Sri in either collecting or providing, just doing my bit, a drop in the ocean, tau please do not embarass me tongue1.gif !! Ah now my Mom... she was a great provider in her time, maata Annapurna, the number of people that would dine at her table with no notice at times and it was considered nothing unsual!! My bow.gif to all the silent, un celebrated (I couldn't find the word!) providers everywhere.

I better upload one song at least to make this post relevant before I become guilty yet again of being unable to practise what I preach!

All hindi versions - CD rips @ 128 unless otherwise specified.

Song 1 Ghum bhulechi nijhum.

Hum Bekhudi Mein Tum Ko Pukare Chale Gaye
, Mohd. Rafi, Kala Pani (1958), S.D. Burman, Majrooh

But, U do not want me to play music? sad.gif Asha is not that bad a singer. unsure.gif

No honey sigh.gif I always think of your bandwidth na sad1.gif In fact it'd be a treat to hear as yet unheard sublime Asha - like when you introduced me to Kaise kahoon mein baat jiya ki or when Stalker ji introduced me to the nuances of Ab jo mile hain tau

Me want U to hear Gujju number: maara raam tame sitaji ne tole na aayo (forgive the spelling mistakes). One of mah favs.

And Asha has some wonderful Bangla songs. I think Rinki should do a program--she has such a huge collection. Sri ke Part II mein can we hope for some Asha gems? rolleyes.gif

I have it, listening as I write. No spelling mistakes bar one - it's aavo (not aayo). Sure would love more regional programs, just that I might not have the luxury for a while to be as obsessive about HF as I have been since long now. It amazes me, you can really appreciate a Gujju song without understanding it? Cool!

Hindi version of Song 2 O banshi keno hai

Yeh Bansi Haaye Yeh Bansi Kyon Gaye
, Lata Mangeshkar, Parakh (1960), Salil Chowdhary, Shailendra

Actually I can understand a bit. Gujju and Punjabi are langs that have some similarity with Hindi--U get a bit here and there. But the songs of this album were very sweetly translated for me by Chitz and Tadatmya (a member of yahoogrps)
