Full Version: Geeta And Her Co-singers
Hamara Forums > Legends > Geeta Dutt
mahesh
hello friends,
i am starting a new thread for duets of geeta duttji.geetaji has sung with all the major singers of her era both male and female.among the trio of geeta-lata and asha, she was the only one who sang few duets with star singer-actor surendra.she sang with surendraji in meri kahani, kamal, maya machendra.it's also likely that she sang with him in chittor vijay and mere bhagwan;films for which detailed information is not yet available.mohd bhai has already uploaded a duet from meri kahani[48] in his thread;i am uploading the other one .i am also uploading another duet from kamal[49].
i am also pasting some information about surendraji from the web

Surendra was born on November 11, 1910 in Batla village of Punjab. He always used B.A., L.L.B. with his name and wanted to establish himself as a successful lawyer, but due to his pleasent voice everyone suggested him to become a singer and try hands at Hindi cinema. Finally, he agreed with them and came to Bombay to join Mehboob Khan's Sagar Movie Tones.

In 1936, he got his first break in Deccan Queen. Deccan Queen established him as a sining star. He released a parody of K. L. Saigal's 'Baalam Aaye..' in his voice as 'Birha Ki Aag Lagi..' which became an instant hit with the film-goers. His next film Aansuon Ki Duniya went un-noticed. He sang 'Tumhi Ne Mujhko Prem Sikhaya..' with Bibbo in his next film Manmohan which became very successful soon after the release of the film, and he got recognition as a singing star of those times. With Jaagirdaar he got his first chance to sing under the baton of great music director Anil Biswaas. Anilda recognised the talent in the young man and was very much impressed by Surendra's voice and ability to sing. Anilda fortified his singing abilities. He gave further chances in Gramophone Singer, Jiwan Saathi, Alibaba, Aurat, Ghareeb, Jawani, etc.

When Anil Biswaas switched over to Bombay Talkies, Surendra sang under Khemchand Prakash and Gyan Dutt for about 2-3 years. Khemchand's Bharthari (1944) was among his best musical creations. Surendra sang 'Bhanwara Madhuban Me Jaa..', 'Bhiksha De De Maa..', 'Allah Naam Ras Pina Praani..' and 'Prem Bina Sab Soona..' in Bharthari. In 1946, Surendra got the opportunity of his life time, when, Mehboob who was making Anmol Ghadi, called him up and gave him the chance to work against the then singing stars Noor Jahan and Suraiyya. For Anmol Ghadi, Naushad gave him a golden chance to sing with Noor Jahan, and Surendra lived up to all expectations. Surendra got songs like 'Aawaz De Kahan Hai..' a duet with Noor Jahan, which was a huge hit, 'Kyun Yaad Aa Rahe Hain Gujre Hue Zamaane..' and 'Ab Kaun Hai Mera..'.

Anmol Ghadi was a huge success and thus Naushad repeated Surendra in Anokhi Ada, Elaan, etc. Surendra sang probably his best song in Gawaiya (1954) under music directly Ram Ganguly, the song was 'Teri Yaad Ka Deepak Jalta Hai Din Raat..' the other version (faster) of the song was sung by the great Talat Mehmood. But, it was the slow version sung by Surendra who took the notice of the film-goers. Ironically, after this he almost stopped singing and confined himself to acting. He acted in many films, like, Dil Deke Dekho, Mughal-e-Aazam, Baaghi, Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne, Waqt, An Evening in Paris, Milan and Sarasatichandra, to name a few.

a major singing star of late forties and early fifties was suraiya.
geetaji sang a lovely duet with suraiya in navketan's debut film afsar[50].
geetaji sang in few suraiya starrers like shaan, dillagi, rajput, jeet etc but they didn't sing any duet together in these film.but in jeet and dillagi they sang two different versions of the same song[too mera chand-dillagi and kaam karo-jeet].
i am uploading the geeta-suraiya duet from afsar composed by sachin dev burman and written by pt. narendra sharma.
happy listening,

hello friends,
continuing the thread after a break.
when geeta dutt made her debut in 1946,shamshad begum was the topmost playback singer.unfortunately shamshad begum has not been given the due recognition by film historians.her immense contribution to hindi film music in the forties and early fifties has been ignored unlike the other ghulam haider protege -noorjehan -whose contribution to hindi film music from 1941 to 1947 is greatly over emphasised and over rated.

shamshad begum sang around 20 songs with geetaji.i am uploading few of them.
here is a article about the great shamshad begum from the net.

Birthplace: Amritsar
Profession: Playback Singer, Bollywood.

Even after six decades after she began singing she is remembered for her immortal voice and unforgettable songs...

Shamshad Begum, the nasal voiced legendary classical and playback singer of yesteryears was born in Amritsar. Making her debut on radio in Lahore in 1937, the Amritsar-born singer captivated the hearts of listeners with the enchanting depth of her voice. The then AIR Lahore helped her in entering the world of movies as frequent broadcasting of her songs induced music directors to use her voice for film songs. Shamshad Begum also recorded naats and devotional songs for a couple of gramophone recording companies which where then located in the Bakshi Market of Anarkali, Lahore.

Lahore-based composer Ghulam Haider used her voice skillfully in some of his earlier films, mostly in Punjabi. When he shifted to Bombay in 1944, Shamshad Begum went with him as a member of his team. In 1944, when Mehboob Khan launched his historical venture, Humayun, Master Ghulam

Most of her songs were memorable hits. Even the one rendered in 1960s for Kismat, after her retirement: "Kajra mohabbatwala ankhiyon mein aisa dala" composed by O.P. Nayyar, proved a superhit. Her duet with Kishore Kumar, Meri neendon main tum, meri khwabon mein tum from Naya Andaz (composed by O. P. Nayyar), similarly, remains almost a touchstone of melodious romance.

Shamshad—reputed to be a stunningly beautiful woman in her youth - performed live, both on stage and the All India Radio (AIR) through her musical group The Crown Imperial Theatrical Company of Performing Arts, set up in Delhi. Her crystal clear voice caught the attention of sarang maestro Ustad Hussain Baksh-wale Saheb, who took her as his disciple.

Shamshad went to Mumbai in the late 1930s to try her fortune. She was immediately grabbed by master music directors like Naushad Ali, Ram Ganguly, S D Burman, O P Nayyar and Khemchand Prakash. Throughout her film singing career, she remained a particular favorite with Naushad and Nayyar who used her voice not only to its fullest range but to the maximum extent possible. Shamshad became a national rage between the 1940s and mid-1960s rendering songs in her nasal voice which helped her carve her independent niche in the world of music. Her songs like O, Lagi Lagi (Aaan) Dhadkar Mera Dil (Babul), Teri Mehfil Main Kismat Azma kar Hum Bhi Dekhange (Mughal-E-Azam),

Similarly, she gave superhits for Nayyar like Kabhi Aar, Kabhi Paar (Aar Paar), Poochh Mera Kya Naam Re, Nadi Kinare Gaon Re (CID). Among other notable numbers she rendered were Saiyan Dilmain Aana Re, Aake Chhup Na Jana Re (Bahaar - S D Burman), Ai Dil Na Mujhe Yaad Dila (Saawan Aaya - Khemchand Prakash) and Kaahe Koyal Shor Machaye (Aaag - Ram Ganguly).

Today she is living in Cuffe Parade with her daughter.
