Khaiyyam started his music career in late Forties. Among his early movies were Parda (1949) and Biwi (1949). under pseudo-name "Sharmaji". In Biwi, he composed "Akele Mein Woh ghabrate Toh Hoge", one of Rafi's best known songs. In early Fifties too Khaiyam composed music for many films. One of his better known films of that period is Dilip Kumar - Meena Kumari starrer Foorpath. The film didn't do well at box office, but it had fabulous music by Khaiyyam including the immortal Talat melody "Sham-e-Gham Ki Kasam Aaj Ghamghin Hain Hum"
