Last month I had a chance to attend Pt. Jasraj's concert at Houston. Being fairly new to Houston, I was kind of alone with no one to talk to and listening rather overhearing to what people were perceiving what the concert was going to be about. I also overheard someone saying that these days, Pt. Ji sings for a max of one hour and leaves the rest to his desciples. Nevertheless, I was keen on listening to him again since I remember his performance for barely an hour 5 yrs back at IISc, bangalore where he was fantabulous.
Pt Ji was accompanied by 3 of his desciples in thiis concert (i apologise I dont remember their names too well) Pt. Ghosh, Smt Trupti Mukherjee and one more.
Pt. Ji sang 4 raagas/ compositions all along with his desciples filling in with small jugalbandi's once a while. Though, I am not a literate in classical music, I should say that even at this age (75)..He was not letting go the "sur". The taans and murkis that he took were at times far better than those that were followed by his students.
I have a special word of appreciation for Ms. Tripti Mukherjee who was awesome. If any of you are classical enthusiasts, I strongly recommend you to listen to her.
Coming back to the concert, I was fortunate enough to listen to the Jasrangi Jugalbandi (where a male and a female sing in their respective scales and different raagas). Then there was a composition in Raag Jog (the first performance) and a bhajan about Hanuman. I do not remember the raagas exactly, but yes..it was a treat to be a part of the program all the way.
Pt Ji was in a wonderful mood. It was evident from his singing. He also mentioned that the audience response made him think that he was performing somewhere in India. On a couple of occasions, he appreciated Lata Mangeshkar's singing and mentioned a couple of incidents. Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan apprently once said "Lataji Kambhakt kabhi sur se nahi jaati" and he promptly extended that compliment to Ms Trupti Mukherjee who again was singing to a wonderful effect.
Overall, I was lucky to be a part of that concert.
