Aahh Bhoopali !! In no way connected to raag Bhoopali, which is an evening raga I suppose ! smile.gif Theres another raga Bhoopali Todi thats a morning raga !! I'm confused again ! sad1.gif

Heres a link for Ragas and thier "times" -- Ragas - Times

Apart from the name, could someone tell me if all the songs in this genre are composed in Raag Bhoopali ? Does the word "Bhoopali" itself have a meaning in Marathi, apart from indicating this genre of songs?
Prabhakar
I would love to listen to Ghanashyam Sundara - which I have not for a long time. I used to wake up to this when I lived in Bombay.

Please do upload this and others too.

Prabhakar

Here's a lesser known, but really good Bhoopali sung by Vani Jairam - uthaa uthaa ho suryanaaraayaNaa.

Although some of the Bhoopalees are in the Bhoop raga, Bhoopalee as a Raga is different from the Musical type or Geet prakaar of that name. The Raga is also called Bhoop and has got fixed notes (A night raga, strangely !).

Dehaachi tijori, Pahaatechya ya prahari, Ghanashyam Sundara, poorvechya deva tujhe are based on this Raga. Tujhya Kaantisam Raktptaka is also a bhoop.

But many other songs of BhupaLee type have added notes and hence come under the 'Pahadi' (A raga based on the folk music). Examples - Uthi uthi gopaalaa, Chal uth re mukunda, Vani Jayram's Utha Utha ho Suryanarayana, Dhaav paav saavale vithaai etc.

One may also include in the list Utha utha chiutai (A Pahadi) ! !

Dev maajaha vithu sawaala is in the Bhoopal Todi Raga which has no relation to the Raga Bhoop.

Prabhati Soor Nabhi Rangati and Uthaa uthaa sakal jan (Both by Asha) are in Yaman Kalyan. Uthi Sri Rama is in Pahadi.

I do not know the original meaning of the word Bhoop. But the Bhoopali as a geet prakar, is generally an appeal to arise in the morning. These are also symbolic invocations for the inner divine to wake up. (Like Jaago Mohan Pyare - A Bhairav song)

Some of the songs mentioned and offered above by Kaustubh are not Bhupalees - Runanubandhachya (although a Pahadi), Raama Raghunandana (Bilaskhani todi), Pratham Tula Vandito (Yaman Kalyan).
I have not heard Utha Utha Sainath Guru, but is a bhoopali type.
Ramprahari Ram Gatha (which I am looking for) is in in the Mishra Charukeshi.

Hey Kaustubh, pls will you u/l 'tuj kantisam raktpataka' at ur convenience?

Interestingly, though Bhoopali is listed as an evening raag, most songs based on it are morning songs smile1.gif

It is also called jokingly as the poor man's raag, as it has the notes 'ma' and 'ni' omitted - 'money varjya' wink2.gif rollf.gif
