Arghhhhhh Khobi cry.gif ......the best fenmale music director of Bollywood
She was introduced in Bollywood by the one and only lyricist Indeevar!

Usha Khanna is the only female music director to have survived for three decades in an almost exclusively male dominated profession and industry. One uses the word survive because she has literally survived and bore the brunt of some ugly and unpleasant episodes.

She made music in films like:

*Aaja sanam
*Lal bangla
*Dil deke dehko
*Saajan bina suhagan
*Sajan ki saheli
*Bin phere hum tere
*Hotel
*Laila
*Raktha Bandhan
*Dil pardesi hogaya
imjagdish
Souten was another movie for which she composed music for...If I am not wrong, at one time she was married to Movie director Saawan Kumar Tak.

I saw this thread just now,and went through your article on wikpedia , it was very informative,i would like to add that Usha Khanna was a very good singer as well, almost all the songs that she sang were very popular at the time of release ,'Sham dekho dal rahee hai' a duet she sang with Rafi for the film 'Anjaan hai koyi' is one of my favourite songs. She was also the MD of this film.

Hi Deep

Just read your much needed article on Usha Khanna on Wikipedia. Needed a clarification though, your article and others I read suggest that she was introduced to Shomu Mukherjee by O P Nayyar. However, the musicindia online article states that she was introduced by Indivar to the Mukherjees and infact was set up as a possible contender of O P Nayyar and not as a protege.

Here is a longish quote from that article:

QUOTE
Her foray into the film industry and a game of one upmanship in which she played no part:
Usha was quite talented as a kid and at an early age she displayed a flair for composing music. ‘When my father wrote lyrics, I would spontaneously set them to music’. Her father was quite a close associate of lyricist Indeevar. Usha was barely in her teens when Indeevar took her to S. Mukherjee (the Filmalaya boss). S Mukherjee first heard her sing and showed no reaction. Then she sang for him one of her own compositions, which he heard a little more keenly and wanted to hear more. After hearing a few of her songs, he asked her from which film she'd picked them up. She told him they're her own songs.

S Mukherjee fetched his wife, his son Joy Mukherjee and asked her to sing 'That O.P. Nayyar' number. She paid no heed to that and sang her own composition. ‘When they realized that I wasn't singing an O.P. Nayyar composition, but one of my own, there was great excitement. I came to know much later that there had been some friction between them and O.P. Nayyar. The Mukherjees who were on a 'We'll show Nayyar' trip, were thrilled to find a music director whom they could introduce as his competitor,’ she reminisces.

In the ego tussle between two big names of that era, the winner turned out to be a skirt-and-blouse clad 16-year-old who had to force herself to wear a sari with a big border and keep a huge bindi on her forehead to be taken seriously in the recording rooms. The debut that turned out to be a gold mine for everybody was the flamboyant Shammi Kapoor starrer, Dil Deke Dekho for which the credit strangely went to O.P.

Could you throw some light on this?
deep750
Hi, I dont know what is correct. the article from deccan herald is an article based on a conversation with Usha-ji while music india online's article is based on "net sources" I would regard article based on a conversation with the person as more credible than an art. based on writings about her on the internet.
Hope you agree. As I dont know the story ab. her from any pther place than the internet my self, I'll trust the deccan herald article wink2.gif
