Dear Shri Sri Ji,

What you say about journalistic ignorance is certainly depressing. I remember, when N. Dutta died a few years backa leading newspaper wrote obituary to Dattaram and went on to quote songs composed by Dattaram mixed with those composed by N. Dutta. Even on the earthmusicnetwork.com they are calling Dattaram as Dattaram Naik and N. Dutta as Narayan Dutta. By the way I am a novice in film music, so I have not heard this name earlier.

A VCD released by a reputed company carries the name of R. D. Burman as music director of Baat Ek Raat Ki, and that of Angulimal does not bother about giving name of its music director Anil Biswas!

yes, Subhash...this happens.....and it is indeed very depressing to see the lack of commitment from journalists who blatantly report so erroneously.

The real name of N Dutta ( or N Datta) was Datta Naik. He was a Goan - but probably given a Bengali sounding name, seeing the success of Anil Biswas, SDBurman, Hemant Kumar etc - much like Ramchandra Chitalkar took on the name of C Ramchandra (when he made his debut in Tamil films), probably because CRamchandra sounded more 'south indian' !! Thereafter, these names remain - especially when the composers turn out to be successful.

The real name of Dattaram is Dattaram Wadkar - he is living somewhere in Goa i think now - not doing so well.

VCDs and DVDs have wrong names occasionally - sometimes to our disadvantage and sometimes to our advantage too !! I've had the experience of buying a VCD with a wrong name which turned out to have music composed by one of my favourite directors....similarly i've bought some others which turned out to be movies with the same name ( but earlier versions ) - though the cover shows the cast of the later version !! Plus others with wrong names on the covers ..but which i bought anyway since i knew who the real music director was !

The good thing about the programme was that it was a good intro for the younger members who were not born at that time when these wonderful melodies of Naushad were composed. Also It was a nostalgic walk through for senior members like us and reminded of those days of Binaca Geet Mala on radio Ceylon (60's & 70's) when most of these songs were played. This was one of the best tribute for a legend. In fact the TV Channels like Star TV should take a cue from this prog. since I read that it eroneously played Ghulam Mohd. compositions of Pakeezah "Chalte chalte yunhi koi" and some other compositions of Shaukat Dehalvi Nashaad's Baradari (1955) as a tribute to Naushad. This shows the ignorance of the media in general.

Any way, as requested I will post this wonderful film version song, un-released and found in movie only, from Shabab (1954) sung by Lata Ji, Jogan ban ayee hoon saiyan tore karan. In the record the wordings are "jogan ban jaongi sayan tore karan. Also song starts differently in the movie version,
"Ishq me tere pehni ...choda zevar gehna, tu jis rang mein khush hai sajan usi rang mein rehna"

If you thought you've just had a strong dose of Naushad...here's just a little more - to round it off !!

Announcing Part 3 of the NAUSHAD program.....a 30 min BONUS program.......to play all the songs which didn't make the main program ( something like the 'deleted scenes' that they have in DVDs nowadays !! ).

In this you will hear some of the other songs which had to be edited out when the list was finalised to fit the program into 2+2 hours !

This 30 min program will be aired at 10 pm IST on Saturday, June 17 - immediately after Pradeep's program on Naqsh Lyallpuri (9-10pm), which I'm sure all of you will surely listen to !!

While on the topic of songs from Anmol ghadi, there's an interesting anecdote as recounted by Naushad in an interview when he was speaking about Noor Jehan ( with reference to a song uploaded here on post # 86 ):

"Noor Jehan was a very warm and friendly person. At the same time, she was a very mischievous person too. In fact, while recording 'Aawaz De Kahan Hai', we had only one microphone. So, she would stand on one side and Surinder Nath (Surendra) stood on the other side. Surinder Nath was a very timid man, a thorough gentleman and he could never take Noorjehan's mischief in his stride. What she would do was ...she would sing her lines and then, instead of turning away, she would stare right into Surinder Nath's face, making him nervous! When he could stand it no longer, he came to me and requested me to ask her to turn away once she finished singing her lines. Noor Jehan laughed .....and then did what I asked her to do !"

Just for info...
As I remember this song when I heard it in 1967, it was later edited from the movie, RAM AUR SHYAM for obvious reasons. It did not go well with the tempo of the movie and sounded too melancholy.
