Shuklas,

Here's one I like from Aao pyar karen (1964), sung by Lata
Ek sunehri shaam thi, behki behki zindagi
Raah mein hum tum mile, meri palkon ke tale
Aashiyan tera ban gaya

Music of Usha Khanna and lyrics of Rajinder Krishan

Enjoy ! gift.gif

Madan Mohan and Lata Mangeshkar - a well known and fabulous combination !! Here's one such classic from one of Madan Mohan's later years, from the film Dil ki rahen (1973).

"Rasm-e-ulfat ko nibhayen to nibhayen kaise
har taraf aag hai daaman ko bachaen kaise"
lyrics of Naqsh Lyalpuri

The track begins with a small speech by Madan Mohan ( from one of his radio programmes). This is a very typical Madan Mohan composition which has his style stamped all over it. Listen to the lovely sitar interludes and the sitar music at the end - all played by Rais Khan, who used to play regularly for Madan Mohan. A few years later, Madan Mohan, apparently feeling insulted by something that Rais Khan had said, dropped him from his music. In fact he dropped the sitar itself from his compositions.... and for Mausam, his next film at that time, he switched completely to the flute with a background of strings. And, what fantastic music and orchestration he produced with 'Dil dhoondta hai phir wohi fursat ke raat din' !!

Such monumentally great composers we had in those days ...

Anyway, enough of my speech ... now enjoy the song! gift.gif

sorry ...changed my mind about the duet I was about to upload... because I came across this TRULY LOVELY and RARE song, which I thought I must immediately share with all of you

Tuhi Shyam mera - from the film Panchayat 1958 (starring Raaj Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Shyama and Nasir Hussain) with music by IQBAL QURESHI ( his first film ) and lyrics by SHAKEEL NOMANI
Words are :
Main gun gaoon tera, tuhi shyam mera
jale jyot jag mein, mere ghar andhera, tuhi shyam mera

Enjoy this melody, sung so beautifully with so much feeling, by Lata ! gift.gif
This will surely be a gem in my collection.

Sri Bhai...Rais Khan had a very long association with O P Nayyar saab, much more than
any other music director. You will find many of the Nayyar saab's song with Sitar taking the
centre stage amongst from all the other instruments that nayyar saab have used beautifully
in his songs. Alas this is Lataji's forum and there is no song of this combination
(Lataji and Nayyar Saab) in the Indian film music.

mahesh - thanks for the info
..and yes, the fact that Lata and OPN never got together will always remain a loss for HFM. But then, if they had also worked together like all the others did.... who knows, we may have lost all the Asha - OPN gems that we were blessed with in the 60s !!

by the way...how do you find the Lata song in Panchayat - Tuhi shyam mera?

Sri

This is a beautiful song. Based on the songs that I know, I would rank this as the best
song in the Lata/Usha Khanna partnership. I believe the Lata songs from "Hum hindustaani"
were popular, but I think none of them come close to this song or the other solo from
this film "TamannaoN ko khilne de". Thanx for a good recording of this song.

Lata is just superb in this song. Last night, while flipping thru channels, I came across
one of those shows where singers are given training. I think this is related somehow to
Ismail Darbar (in fact, he may have been the guy coaching). This girl was trying to
sing "Na ja mere humdum". And she seemed good enough. But the coach was trying
to explain to her that this was a Lata song and had to be handled with the appropriate
delicacy. As he explained to the girl how to do it, she failed several times. When she
finally sang it on stage, she had managed to tone down the rough edges but in the
process, the life also went out of the song. And that is when one realizes what the
Mangeshkar sisters are able to achieve, and why they epitomize the best in their craft.
And the 2 Lata solos from this film show just how magnificently Lata provides delicacy
to a song.

was included in the film or not. Anyway, I have heard about this song, but never
heard it myself. Is it on the "Benazir" CD??

sangeetbhakt - thanks for your great comments.
about the song 'alvida jaan-e-wafa' - i somehow thought these words were connected with the last song of the film when meena kumari dances for the last time in the story and dies ... but that song in the film is 'gham nahin jo zindagi veeraan hai' and these words do not appear - in any case the last song is an Asha Bhosle number and not Lata's. So my fault for misleading on this issue .... there is no song with these words in the CD of the film. Earth music also lists a Rafi song 'le gayi ek haseena' - this song is also not to be found

I do believe the song was recorded for this film and somebody who has
heard it says that it is a really lovely one. But as it is not in the film
itself and not on the CD, it is hard to come by. Perhaps Dharamvir-ji
or Mahesh have it???

After the great success of classical music of Baiju Bawara (1953), Naushad had already won the admiration of the famous producer V. Shantaram. In 1953, when Shantaram was planning to produce his most famous film Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje , he initially invited Naushad to compose music for this film. At this time, Naushad already knew that great music director Vasant Desai was already an employee of Shantaram's Rajkamal studios. Naushad thanked Shantaram for the offer. But after a few minutes of chat, pointed out that when music director of the caliber of Vasant Desai was already available in Rajkamal Studios, it would be appropriate that Shantaram offer this film music to Vasant Desai. He also stressed that Vasant Desai was fully capable of giving classical based music. So Naushad was noble enough to forego the opportunity to compose music for Shantaram's film. After coming to know about this incident, next day, Vasant Desai, with tears in his eyes, personally came to Naushad and thanked him for this noble gesture. We all know that Vasant Desai did a wonderful job in composing classical based music for the film Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje.

From JJPB - O suno suno ji more rasiya man basiya, kuchh kuchh tumse bole ankhiyan. Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri. It's a CD rip and sounds restored. How much restored, I can't tell.

Lovely, lovely, charming song from 'Main bhi ladki hoon' 1964 - and one of my favourite tunes :
Chanda se hoga woh pyaara, phoolon se hoga woh nyaara
Lata Mangeshkar in rare combination with P B Srinivas
(his name 's always spelt as Srinivos, though !!)
P B Srinivas was well known in south indian films for his lovely, soft voice - a-la Talat Mahmood and has many many hits to his name. I was fortunate to have heard him in a live concert about 30 years ago ... where he sang this song and left all of us in a trance for several hours

On screen, Meena Kumari and Dharmendra sing the song - eagerly anticipating the arrival of their baby - whom they are describing in the song. This tune was originally composed by R Sudarsanam (with the lyrics of Kannadasan) for the Tamil version of the film 'Naanum oru penn' released in 1963 - and was sung by T M Sounderarajan and P Susheela. The same tune has been retained by Chitragupt for the hindi version. For those interested I am also providing a small sample clip of the original song in Tamil.
Enjoy !!! gift.gif

Sri
visuja

The film DAADI MAA (1966) had many nice songs by ROSHAN
Here's a nice one by Lata Mangeshkar :
Chale aaye re, hum to chale aaye re, sabse bacha ke ankhiyan

Here's a nice number composed by Khayyam for Aakhri Khat 1966. Some parts of it are reminiscent of the composer's earlier musical masterpiece 'Phir Subah Hogi'

Mere chanda mere nanhe tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaoon
Enjoy !! gift.gif

sri
Gunga Jumna 1961 had many well known songs. This one - which I like very much - was also well known but not quite as famous as the other ones. Here's

Ho re Ho re, Jhanana ghunghar baaje,
mora man jhoome piya, tori dagar choome piya,
aaja ghar aaja

Just love the lively tempo of this song. It also has some 'Ho-ho-ho'-ing by Mohd. Rafi towards the end..but he is not credited for it - knowing him, he must have done it for free - since it was only a very small bit of singing !!
Enjoy ! gift.gif

Marhaba Sri Bhai,

If you don't mind, I have a request.

Mohabbat Ki Jhooti Kahani Pe Roye by Lata Mangeshkar; Film: Mughal-E-Azam (1960); Music: Naushad Ali; Lyrics: Shakeel Bedayuni

I found a rearrangement version (I think its sung by another lady), the song is really awesome, but you know that I absolutely like the original versions of old songs.

Is it possible, to upload it at least at 128 kbps?

I would be grateful.

Thanks in anticipation with best regards...

Here's a very rare one from Lata with the music of Chitragupt - from the film Do Shikari (1979). Song was recorded in the late 60s but the film was released a decade later (with a new name). Picturised on a very young Rekha wooing Biswajit.

(chand kyon zard hai) ...O sajna, daraati hai yeh tanhai ki raatein

Specially requested by our own Lata after hearing it on HF radio !!
Enjoy ! gift.gif

Sri

P.S. (added later)
Apparently this song was truncated in the film soundtrack (on VCD) - which accounts for the unusual beginning - starting with the antara (first verse) - chand kyon zard hai. The complete song starting with the mukhda 'sajna daraati hai' has been uploaded by Mohsin in another thread named 'Sajna daraati hai' in the Lata forum. Pl see that too.
