i got to know that J.P. Dutta is going to make a remake of the famous, superhit movie Umraao Jaan and the Umrao jaan of this movie is going to be Aishwarya Rai....

now this is something very very indigestible to me.... Aishwarya will never ever suit this role not because i personally dont like her but because if people know the story of Umrao Jaan they will know that she will be just the opposite of what Umrao Jaan looked like...
In the original movie Rekha did a wonderful job of portraying the most famous prostitute of Lucknow not only acting wise but looks wise too...

ok for those who dont know… Umrao Jaan was actually a girl from Faizabaad, her real name was Ameeran she belonged to a poor Muslim family her uncle or someone from her village abducted her and sold her to a pimp... this person had another abducted girl with him and he took both the girls to Lucknow city.
this fella then went to a Nawab's palace where the lady of the house wanted a daughter so she bought the other girl who was a fair, simple looking kid...rejecting Ameeran because though she had good features she was not fair and was not fitting into the family of fair beautiful nawabs... and thus by the twist of faith she was bought by a Prostitute so she became a courtesan instead and because she grew up to be a beauty she soon became the most famous one of them all....
in the course of time because of the British government she had to fled back to Faizabaad where she was reunited with her mom and Brother but her brother rejected her and she had to go back….

For some assignment a few months back I went to the Phoolwali gali (or the thandi gali) in Chowk, Lucknow (the area where these Courtesans lived) and clicked some pictures of the old dilapidated buildings.

In the pic you can see the house where Umrao Jaan lived… its now almost in ruins and the man who claims to owe the house now (let me tell you I had a major fight with this man he wasn’t allowing me to take the pics but I took it anyways ) is going to knock it down soon…

And does the street.....(Phoolwali/Thandi Gali) still house courtesans & prostitutes? Or is it that....there's no such activity now....but the name just stuck???

As far as the public and the government is concerned no... there are no more prostitutes there and yes the name stuck… all the houses have been turned into shops you remember AB's niche paan ki dukaan uppar gori ka makaan they have their house above their shop but the activities still take place under cover now...
i had to go inside some of the houses too to click the pics and not everyone was cooperative a lady did cooperate she introduced the women there as her daughter or daughter in laws and im not sure if it was the truth or not and none of them allowed me to take their pics

Sawaal hi nahin uthtaa....cent percent they werent her daughters or d-i-l's....hehehe... And yes....there's no way these activities will stop...... no doubt they go on.... under cover yah over cover....koi farak nahi padhta re... Btw .....what was your project...with 'these' connections??? Is it the same Lucknow-heritage-promotion thing??? or something more to it, that you had to visit thse areas, and talk to people & get pics????

no it was not the lko heritage conservation thing though this was done at the time keeping in mind this final project.... actually i had to make an awareness campaign for AIDS and for the TVC i needed to shoot a typical prostitute area i wasnt comfortable doing that in Delhi so i came to my own city for the pics and the case study

Good job for the picture... There was a famous book on Umrao Jaan.... ,I dont remember the title as have read it long back... I think the movie is also made from that book.... I happen to get chance to see one episode of Umrao Jaan on ARY or GEO , some channel from Dubai.. at a friend's place here in USA.... I felt the serial was pretty good.. lots of facts and details on her life.....

Did you knew , Priyanka was initially chosen for the role... but with her tight schedule or something JP Dutta dropped her idea and went for AISH.. yuckkk will never see that movie but might have to change the mind... isnt Abhishek the hero in that movie ....

From the time I have seen Umrao Jaan, I have always wished Madhuri Dixit to do this role. But that never happened.

From the current generation heroines, I don't see anyone perfectly fitting this role. Rani Mukherjee can give it a shot.

Umrao Jaan Ada, considered by many the first modern Indian novel, was written at the end of the 19th Century by Mirza Hadi Ruswa (1858-1931). The novel concerns the famous real-life courtesan, Umrao Jaan, who as an old woman narrated her life story to Ruswa. The girl Amiran, later named Umrao Jaan, had been kidnapped and brought to Lucknow in childhood by two criminals, who sold her to the grand madame Khanum.

At one point she returns home, only to be rejected cruelly by her family. The novel's main strength is in its portrayal of the golden age of mid-19th Century Lucknow, and its frank discussion of the moral hypocrisy of Indian society.
In Ruswa's novel, Umrao Jaan herself can be seen as a symbol of India, and the suitors that flock around her as images of the British. Captivated by her youth, beauty, wealth, and culture, her suitors seek to possess her, and ultimately to exploit her.

yes Khobi he will... i read in some of her interviews that Her husband Shree Raam Nene has no problem with her working in movies and once her kids are a bit grown up she will resume her work... also read somewhere that some directors who wanted to start a movie with her have shelved there project just because they dont want any other actress in her place....
oh by the way have you niticed in most of the hit songs of Madhuri Dixit the word Raam ji has been repeatedly used... was it fate that her Husband's name is Raam???
