Full Version: En Raag Kayi Rang

Folks, One of the best ways to get the "pakad" of a raag IMHO is to listen to several taranas/bandishes/compositions in which the pakad is clearly heard. Based on this simple observation, here is a thread that helps bring out the flavor of a specific raag clearly through a series of compositions based on that raag.

This one is on bhairavi. And I kick this off with Amjad Ali Khan playing "baju band khul khul jaaye" followed by a dhun in the same raag.

Enjoy, add, and educate! Thanks

Not exactly a classical performance, but spectacular bhairavi nevertheless.

BTW, here is an interesting article on the background of this thumri...

Another spectacular Bhairavi that's etched in every Indian mind is the timeless punjabi classic "Heer". Although Heer is usually limited to folk music, here is an instrumental rendition of Heer by a classical musician. Pandit Ronu Majumdar plays Heer on bansuri:

Mahesh bhai,
This is the only one I have one from your list. Interesting how Janki Bai announces her name at the end of the performance. I have heard this in other performances from that era too. Wonder if that was the common practice then ?

I am attaching the my personal favorite (by far) in Bhairavi. No rendition of this raga has moved me as much as this one. The quality of recording is awful but still reasonably acceptable and hopefully will not take away from this wonderful recording.
The artiste is Durgesh Nandini. I have not been able to find out any information about her at all except that she is/was a "bai"ji. She sings two bandishes here, the second one of which is Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaaye. I have to thank Shri Ramanuj Dasgupta for providing me with this recording.
