Sahitya Akademi winning poet and film lyricist, Nida Fazli, and songwriter Sudhakar Sharma have registered separate complaints with the Writers’ Association in Andheri against songwriter — Sameer — accusing him of copying a song, which both claim was written by them.
The song, Sajan tumse pyar ki ladai main toot gai chudiya kalai main, features in the Salman Khan-starrer, Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya.
The Association decided to give all the three parties a hearing on August 6 in order to reach a settlement.
However, Sameer gave the association a written application stating he was out of town. Now, the amended date of the hearing will be fixed after Sameer’s return.
It’s from my book: Fazli
“The first two lines of the song are from my poem in the book, Mor Naach, published in 1978. I have sought compensation of Rs 5 lakh from Sameer,” said Fazli.
I wrote it: Sharma
Sudhakar Sharma whose songs have featured in movies like Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya and Hello Brother among others, has his own version of the story.
“I wrote this song in 1994, and it was actually recorded for two films — one in Bhojpuri called Lagi Chhute Na; the other a Salman Khan-starrer, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, where the score was composed by Himesh Reshammiya.
Unfortunately, the song wasn’t used in either movie,” said Sharma. He has now asked Samir to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation.
Coincidence, says Sameer
Sameer, on his part has termed the similarity as ‘coincidental’.
“Hindi film songs have an established tradition of stock phrases, words and expressions that everybody uses. Obviously using them does not amount to copying. Let them say what they want.”
