Uma Devi or ‘Tun Tun’, who became another regular in the Guru Dutt team. Uma Devi had begun her career as play-back singer; her most famous song ‘Afsana likh rahi houn’ (I write this story), in the 1947 film ‘Dard’ led to further recording opportunities. When Uma Devi decided to abandon her singing career, music director Naushad suggested that she work as a comedienne and exploit her natural flair for comedy. Her screen name derives from her first screen role as the comic character Tun Tun in the film ‘Babul’. In an interview in ‘The Illustrated Weekly of India’ in April 1987, Tun Tun commented that it was only Guru Dutt who insisted on crediting her in his films under her real name. She added that her favorite role was as a Christian landlady in ‘Mr & Mrs 55’ – a role that she found particularly easy to portray because she lived in Mahim, an area of Bombay where many of her neighbors and friends were Christian.
