Interesting to note that amidst all the Sitar players he mentioned, Ustad Imrat Khan never talked about Pt. Nikhil Banerjee !

Very interesting article. A notable feature which comes out og this article is the sad nature of rivalry between two stalwarts. I just wonder how much we have lost or gained due to this kind of rivalry

Bibhas,
I noticed that too - and was equally surprised. I do find that Nikhil babu's playing moves me in a way that few others do - and to me that is really what matters most. I humbly submit that I do not believe that the ability/inability to play a particular "taan" should decide on the who is the "greatest" sitar player of the last century! These are matters of personal preference and taste - it is like trying to define beauty....
I am really not trying to start anything here - just my two cents!

I agree with you a 100% Shaibaal. The performance has to move me to get to the top of my charts, technical superiority comes a distant second. Same reason I love Hariji's bansuri even though some critics claim he's not a great "musician". Have you heard Nikhilji's Bhimpalasi, Malgunji or Bilaskhani Todi ? Absolutely breathaking peformances that move your innermost core.
NATURE
Absolutely correct statement about Pt. Nikhil Banerjee ... a Great and Great Sitar Maestro ...
If he was alive 2day then he could reach much more Popularity and Success in the world of
Music though He has already achieved that but still that matters ....
----
And Shaibaal Ji to some xtent u r correct. "Playing a Particular taan can't decide whether some 1
is a great Musician or not" because lots of things depend, like the way he songs/playes ..
For example, u may feel better in listening to Pt. Jasraj in some tunes than Pt. Bhimsen Joshi
Because they came from diferent "Gharanas" and so the way is different. 1 of my Uncles used to
Say "Pt. Nikhil Banerjee could get much better proclaim than what Pt. Ravi Shankar got if he could
Live a few more years .. Sorry I am not comparing them, just giving some1 's view.
He(My Uncle) may be wrong ..
But just to mention that Pt. Nikhil Ji was an xcellent Performer /Musician ....
******************************************
Here just adding 1 request ... Can any 1 please upload some Albums of Pt. Ravi Shankar and
Pt. Nikhil Banerjee ??? and also Ustad Zakir Hussain with His father ? I already requested that in
"Kachchaa Dhaaga" Topic ... Waiting for u to post ...

Bibhas,
And Megh, and Sohini, and Ramdasi Malhar, and Nat Bhairav, and .....
It is wonderful that you mention Malgunji. I had searched high and low for a copy for years since I had heard and read about it and finally got it a few months ago. I was trying to look for another adjective but I will settle for yours - breathtaking! And such a sweet raga..... I do not have any vocal renditions on this raga by the way and was wondering if someone could upload one. All I have is a Nazrul Geeti (again!) based on Malgunji that I have just uploaded in the Bangla forum.

Shaibaal,
For a geet that starts "Gunji Mala....", no surprise Nazrul chose Malgunji to compose it. I do not have any vocal renditions of Malgunji but India Archives has a recital by Vidyadhar Vyas which is the only vocal recital I can find online for Malgunji. Coming back to Nikhil Babu, one recital I am searching High and Low for is a full length Hemant. I hear it is quite a masterpiece. If you have it, please do the honors. I am also looking for Puriya Dhanashree by him.

There is a recording of Narayanrao Vyas & Vinayakrao Patwardhan in Malgunji. (HMV). The vilambit bandish goes 'ban mein charawat gai'.

Bengalis may have heard a famous recital of Jnanendra Prasad Goswami (Bishnupur Gharana) singing 'ujal kajal duti nayantara' and 'ratat ratat radha manmohan..'

Regards-Archie.
