Thats a tough decision to make between 40s, 50s and 60s. I voted for 50's, but i really enjoy Noor Jehan output from the 40s and early 60s. It was touch decision between 50s and early 60s, however I voted for 50s. Who can forget Intezaar, Neend, Gulnaar and Koel. blink1.gif blink1.gif

What u think Priya? thumbs-up.gif

Undoubtedly, Noor Jehan's output was Best in 1950s.

Dopatta, Chanway, Gulnar, Intezar, Pattey Khan, Lakht-e-Jigar,
Nooran, Chhumanter, Anarkali, Jan-e-Bahar(one song),
Neend, Koel and Padosan were her films during that decade.

Yes, I agree: Apart from all the magical hits during the period, if U evaluate her singing based on voice quality, expression, style, so on too I think the 50s would be the best. Though like Ummer, I too enjoy a lot from the 40s and especially the 60s, and unlike him so many of her songs in the 70s and 80s too.

Ya? Have not heard that many of her 90s songs. Ya in the 40s and 50s due to acting she did not sing that much. cry.gif

Yah! She was very active in early 90's. I am sure her 90s output is MORE than her combined output from the 40s/50s.

Hi friends

Yes ofcourse it is too difficult to judge her best decade, but i think she done quite a good in 40's may be she got very good opportunities here right from khandaan to mirza sahiban.it was her melody mixed with excellent lyrics and music which added to the golden years ,
this decade was full of changes and she brought a very new style of singing, nasal with melody and in this decade she inspired many others too which rose them to greater heights..i voted for 40's.also 40's were her starting period from baby noorjahan to heroine noorjahan and she conquered the bollywood in this starting decade of her life
It cannot be denied that 50's and 60's are excellent too. ireally enjoy teri vanjali di mithi taan, mera sohna shehr kasoor, and many others and she turned to Mallika-e-tarranum in these decades

Whatever she sang in 40s can be simply summed up as BRILLIANT.

In my openion, She was 2 good in 70s too. So I voted for 70s. I love Naag Muni songs, I thing this was a 70s film.

This has been the most difficult poll for me. Only a hardcore sadist could have thought of such a poll tongue.gif laugh.gif I love Noor Jehan's music from all decades and it was a very difficult choice between 40s, 50s and 60s. But, after a deep thought I went for 1960s- the era in which Noor Jehan ventured full time into playback. She has sung a range of songs during this period giving a versatile output doing full justice to her talent.

Just listen to the puritan classical: 'rasile morey rasiya najariya mila' (Mausiqar, 1962) or the sombre and yearning 'jabse gaye piya bheji nahin patiyan' (Haveli, 1964) and 'mere piya ko dhoondh ke lao, kabhi tum bhi humse the, rahon pe thahri (Ghoonghat, 1962) and 'kanoo kita pyar tere nal ve' (lado, 1966) and phikki pai gayi chan tareyan di loe' (Badla, 1968) or the lament 'mujhse pehli si mohabbat' (Qaidi, 1962) and 'har qadam par nit naye' (Mere mehboob, 1966) or the devotional 'man mandir ke devata rakho laj hmari' (Lakhon Mein Ek, 1967) or the naughty lot 'meri chichi da chhalla' (Dhee Rani, 1969) and 've aeho mera ji karda' (Dil da jani, 1967) or the classic 'mujhse pehli si mohabbat' (1962) or the pathos filled 'ab yahan koi nahin ayega' (Baaji, 1963) or the romantic 'dil ki dhadkan teri awaz hui' (Farishta, 1961) or the contentious 'arre o bemurravat arre o bewafa bata de kya yehi hai wafaon ka sila' (Sawal, 1966).....there are really abundant shades of her singing captured in the music of 1960s.

Yasmin just like you, I also madly love the Naag Muni songs. I can listen to 'man mein uthi nayi tarang' and 'pag laage daasi daras ki pyaasi' for hours. And then 'aaj bhi sooraj doob gaya hai' and 'jiya tarpey naina barsen' has such a haunting effect and 'tan tohpey waarun' makes you so emotional. Naag Muni and Salam-e-Mohabbat(1971) were among NJ's musically best urdu films of 1970s in my opinion smile1.gif

A very difficult choice between 40's and 50's. But my vote ultimately went to 40's.

The decade begins with Khandan, followed by Nadaan, Lal Haveli, Dost, Badi Maan, Gaon Ki Gori, Zeenat, Anmol Ghadi and ending with Jugnu and Mirza Sahiban has to be Noorjehan's best. An awesome collection by any standard. Not to forget the the top notch music directors; starting with Master Ghulam Haider, followed by Datta koregaonkar, Rafiq Ghaznavi, Sajjad Hussain, Mir Saheb, Shyam Sunder, Hafiz Khan, Firoze Nizami and Pandit Amarnath who provided Noorjehan with some of their best compositions. Yes, Dopatta, Gulnar, Intezaar, Lakht - e - Jigar, Anarkali and Koel were were fabulous scores in their own right as were some of the solos such as 'Mujhse Pehli Si Mohabbat' in 50's. But the best decade, 40's undoubtedly.

It is good to see that we have votes for different decades. I'm sure if Bilal would have been around he must be voting for 1980s smile1.gif
Priya
The fact that the 40s gets maximum votes--does it reflect the immortal nature of the melodies of that era or just that those songs are popular and easily available in both India and Pakistan?

Quite a contentious matter indeed, I think the jury should remain out. In my opinion we cannot go for an either/or answer. Noor Jehan's songs of 1940s are immortal without any doubt but the availability factor is also very much there. There are people who have hardly heard of Noor Jehan of 1960s. The music of 1950s is still better available in both India and Pakistan. Collectors and recording companies have Dupatta, Koel, Intezar, Lakht-e-Jigar, Gulnar, etc but same is not true for 1960s. smile1.gif

Having already voted and backed it with an opinion, I guess I am not entitled to a second chance. So let me just present a sample of songs to plead my case in favour of 40's. To keep the list to manageable proportion (only 10 songs), I am just including 2 songs from only 5 movies of Noorjehan. But, believe me, compared to the decision on the best decade; it was far more painful to select just 5 movies and then to select just two songs from those movies. Anyway, savour this list:

Khandan: Tu Kaun Si Badli mein and Merey Liye Jahan Mein
Dost: Badnam Mohabbat Kaun Karey and Koi Prem Ka Deke Sandesa
Badi Maan: Diya Jalakar and Kisi Tarah Se Mohabbat Mein
Gaon Ki Gori: Kis Tarah Bhoolega Dil and Yeh Kaun Hansa
Jugnu: Aaj Ki Raat and Humein Toh Sham - e - Gham Mein

At the end of this exercise, I feel I have committed a sacrilege by omitting Anmol Ghadi, Zeenat, Mirza Sahiban, Nadaan, Lal Haveli and other movies of 40s and by omitting songs such as Baithhi Hoon Teri Yaad ka, Aa Intezar Hai Tera, Umangen Dil Ki Machli and other immortal melodies of Noorjehan from selected movies.

But as far as the choice of the decade goes I am not much in doubt; though I must confess that actually the exercise of this choice is limited to her songs in 40s, 50s and 60s only. Not very familiar with her songs from 70s and 80s, barring a few exceptions.

Uff, this one was really a hard one. Probably the hardest Poll i've ever voted on. Well, a time where I really liked Madam the most( musicwise) was probably during the during the 40's, 50's and 60's. The music of those times, were extraordinary. But voicewise I liked the 60's, 70's and 80's most. Maybe thats because of the change of how music was broadcasted at the newer times. The 90's werent bad either(I really liked Ki Dam Da Bharosa).. But between all those years, I really liked the 70 and 80's the most. Hats off 4 u Inaam Bhai, for making this fantastic poll. clap1.gif

A very tough decision to make-I think we have to look at each song on an individual basis;and if we do this, this makes cmparisons very difficult; if we look at her voice quality & melodies, then I think her greatest period of output was with Khurshid Anwar (NJ herself said there is no one quite like him & found his style of composing to be unique & above everyone else's). He definitely did bring out the best in her!
