Did any one get a chance to listen to Ustad Rashid Khan on saturday ? He was superb (as usual). Although the concert started over 30 mins late, Khan sahab more than made up for the delay.
Ustad Rashid Khan was accompanied superbly on the sarangi by Pt. Ramesh Misra and on tabla by Pt. Anandagopal Bandopadhyay. Harmonium support was by Shri Jyoti Guha and Vocal support by Khan sahab's disciple, shri Prasad Kapade.

There were no introductions as the artists came on stage and no foreword. The artists waited a few minutes and decided to start the concert after all ! Ustad ji started with Raga Jog and used the bada Khayal "Piharvaa ko phir maano" to take us through all the delicate nuances of Jog. And as the first hour was coming to a close, he moved on to a madhyalay cheez "baat banaavat" and then onto drut laya with "saajan more ghar aa". By the time Jog ended, he had sung for nearly 80 minutes and it was a marvellous experience marred only by Prasad kapade's inattentive and "out of sync" vocal support although he did come into his own in the drutlaya cheez.

After a short break, the organiser of the concert came on stage and then introduced the artists with apologies for the shoddy start doh.gif ! The second raga that Rashid ji sang was one of my favorites- Kaushikdhwani aka Bhinna Shadja and he sang "Una Sang Laage". Though short, his alaap was breathtaking and he sang very melodiously and emotionally. Kaushikdhwani was followed by Sohini and he sang three pieces: "Kaahe Ujaadi Mori Neend" in madhyalay, "Dekh Dekh Man Lalchaye" (I am not sure about the first two words, they sounded like Dekh Dekh) and a Tarana in drut lay. As midnight was drawing close and the organisers made it a point to mention they had reserved the auditorium for a finite time, Rashid ji thought of venturing into Malhar (at least I thought so as he started to tune his swamandal into the Malhar ang) and then almost as if he remembered the organiser's words, switched gears, tuned his swarmandal to Bhairavi and gave us yet another wonderful "Aaj Radha Brij ko chali".

Despite the little hiccups with the arrangements and Prasad Kapade's inattentive vocal support, it was an awesome concert. The Kaushikdhwani is still ringing in my ears !
