(ladies welcome too)
I dont remember all the 9 ras that I learnt about a long time ago
shrungar, shaant, viir, bhakti, bibhatsa, raudra, karuN
(some may be made up by me just now biggrin.gif)
But I think I am going to start one thread for each ras that I can remember
and list songs, poems
please add as you like.

For shrungar ras lets start with kavivary baa. bha. borkar's
japanii ramalaachii raatra as read by P. L. Deshpande
(This one is from anandayatraa kavitechii)

(one point about the poem, the poet didn't actually spend any time with a geisha, this is all imagination of a poetic mind)

I will also post lyrics later

But before he became recognized by his household name "pu. la."
He seems to have been known as PL to his buddies. (and pii. yal. to the kanaDii buddies smile1.gif)
(as written by him in the sketches of his acquaintances)
(someone I knew used to call him P.L. uncle)

just found out that our admin-in-chief is konkanii
so posting bakii-baab's poem must win some points for me in getting to that trusted group
(next up will be a konkani poem by baaki-baab, recited by PL, tyaa disaa vaDaakaDe gaDat tinisaanaa, ma.nd man.d vaajat aalii tujii go pai.njaNaa) biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

ok here are the lyrics thanks to one Kedar MhasavaDe

Since I cant download the file, I can not test it. But lately I am not actually zipping the files, just changing the extension from mp3 to zip. may be that is the problem. try to change extension and see if that works.

Anybody else having same problem?

I could to listen to the file, just by changing the extenstion to mp3. But NM, you should be able to download from this site, since you have more than 50 posts to your name. (Unless the rules got changed in the meantime ).

By the way, it was an amazing poem thumbs-up.gif !!!!! But I must admit I struggled with a few words here.. Would really appreciate if someone could help with their meaning (MANDRAKE, AKEL...Where art thou ?? camera.gif )

NM, do you have any more of such stuff ? Just bring 'em on !!!
Mandrake
Dhananjay, quite a few clarifications smile1.gif

1) nm cannot download even though he's past the 50 post mark. That rule was only for 1 week. Now he needs to PM Pradeep.

2) Since the arrival of Akel on HF, I have retired from the translation business wink2.gif (though I admit that this poem is a cakewalk)

3) I am sure nm also will be more than equal to the task of translating what he has u/l ed thumbs-up.gif

Warm regards,

I will leave the complete meaning to someone else more competent
kukkut - rooster
sakundi - mantle (?)
duhita - daughter (actually duhitru - sanskrit word is pretty close to latin word for daughter)
waiduryi - like the presious stone waiDurya (I wouldnt know which one it is in english)
wetra - wet - (flexible bambuu)
rajat - silver
nm007
If borakar was the poet of love of yester years, suresh bhaT has to be the poet of love of current marathi literature

So next up will be ...

(anybody wants to add his/her favorite?)

Maad, Rasaavali, Jhela, Sapaata, Alak, Lakhiya (as in "nakhe lakhiya")

first the easy ones
sapaataa - flip-flops, slippers, sandals
alak - hair
laakhiyaa - I dont remember the english word right now, but laakh is the red paste that was used to seal the envelopes. It is made from tree sap. here it us used to suggest the red nail paint
mad - it is the juice that flows from the ga.nDsthaL of a male elephent when he is in heat. (notice the words maadak, or madamast both are made from mad)
so
हृदय मदाचे मोहळ झाले जडावली दृष्टी would mean
my heart was filled with mad (lust?? ugli word really) and eyes couldn't stay open

and the ones where I am not quite sure
jhelaa - some sort of cloth like uparaNe (a variant of shela may be)

rasaawalii - again I am not quite sure
if we break the line as
gaatrii vichitra reshim chitre rasaavalii hotii
avayavaanmadhe vegaLiich reshmachii chitre rasarasalelii hotii
or if those two are two separate things then
vegaLiich reshamii chitre (bhintiwar) hotii aaNii (tujhe) avayav rasarasalele hote.

of course I can be completely wrong with rasaavalili having a different meaning

since no one added a suresh bhaT favourite
I am going to add one of mine.
(I had to decide between taruN aahe raatra, maalavuun Taak diip, chaa.ndaNyaat firataanaa)
taruN aahe aaN cha.ndaNyaat firataanaa are by asha, but the first one is awesome byut a bit sad and the second one sounds like the immature love of a college student. So going with maalavuun Taak diip (actual zip, not extension change)

That was a mistake, malamalii taaruNya maajhe is the best shrungaric poem by suresh bhaT bar none. (mokaLyaa kesaat maajhyaa tuu jiivaalaa gu.ntavaave - vaa, kyaa baat hai) (and it is sung by asha too, lataa's marathi shringrarik songs seem to be sung with a quiet aliptataa, whereas aashaa just brings forth the wanting (please someone suggest the right word here)) I do not seem to have it on CD. So can some/one u/l it please?

lol... allow me pls wink2.gif
jhela = swing (jhoka, jhula in marathi)
(remember vegavegali fuley umalalee... by H. Mangeshkar? He sings "kadamb tarula baandhuni jhele, oonch ghaalati jhokey'? Translated that looks like: tying swings to the kadamb tree, taking high swings...)

rasaawali = became full of 'ras' (whichever ras (juice) pu la meant)

NM / Mandrake,
Thanks a lot for your efforts in making us understand the song better clap1.gif ...... Adds so much value to the pleasure of listening !!!

Mandrake, good to see you back. I was dumbstruck when you mentioned that you are "out of the business of translation" blab.gif !!! It has been your forte, all this while... and we've really enjoyed your posts so far. Now with NM and Akel joining the gang, we are looking forward to good times ahead thumbs-up.gif

Well here's the song NM asked for.. Malmali tarunya maajhe from the movie Gharkul.

Talking of Suresh Bhat, here's another of his songs which fits the bill for this thread....

Pahaate Pahaate mala jaag aali
Tujhi reshamaachi mithi sail jhaali

This song has two versions, one sung by C. Ramchandra and the other by Suresh Wadkar. Here's the Suresh Wadkar version (beware....the quality isn't great !!!)

Dhananjay, for a moment I was taken aback by your very kind words. (Thanks so much for that). Didn't ever think that my part-time 'translation business' could bring joy to anyone. But now that I understand, I think I'll follow the tradition of Imran Khan and other cricketers and 'come out of retirement' wink2.gif

However, let me tell you that Aniruddha (akel) with his obvious grounding in sanskrit (or so I believe) seems to be far ahead of me in this department. So as long as others are doing such a precise job, I think I'll just hang around in the background and make contributions when I think they are required.
Am I talking right? I do hope so... blab.gif

1. You do a great job!
2. Your public needs you.
3. I am not any better. If I were to do a complete translation, I am sure to not be able to tranlate some parts (and even worse, translate some parts wrong)
4. my visits here are infrequent.

yup, passion is the word. (but not just the passion of love, but the passion of life)

The next one is not sung by anybody (as far as I know).
However the "greatest marathi poet ever" needs to be represented in this thread. So I will be itransifying the poem "pruthviiche premgiit" by kusumaagraj (who was awarded a very well deserverd dnyaanapiiTh, the second marathi writer with that award. Another one of his beautiful poems is swapnaachii samaaptii - kaaDh sakhe gaLyaatiil tujhe chaa.ndaNyaanche haat, kshitiijaachyaa paliikaDe ubhe divasaache duut)

For the non-marathi folk,
The poet has imagined that the earth is going round the sun because of its love for the sun and in this poem, the earth is telling the sun about her unrequited love

This one belongs to the lavaNii genre. Though lavaNii is essentially shrungaar ras, most laavaNii songs are heavy on double entrande and relatively coarse/physical presentation of the shrungaar, (the worst kind being "maajhyaa vhiriilaa engine basavaa" priyaajii - please dont ask for translation biggrin.gif). For this reason and the fact that we already have a thread on lavaNiis, I intentionally did not add any laavaNiis in "shrungaar ras" thread. However I do want to add "sundaraa manaamadhe bharalii" by shaahiir ramjoshi to that thread, since that poet is the FIRST shringaarik poet of marathi at a time when poetry for anything less than gods or kings was looked down upon. I do not know if it is ever sung by anybody. If any of you know, please u/l.

I have no idea about the details of this song. I guess, now your father can help us out !!! rolleyes.gif

The singer is Jayaram Shiledar who played Ramjoshi in the film.

Warm regards,

NM,
This reminds me of another song from kiichakavadh -
dhunda madhumatii raatra re, naath re
tan man naache, yauvan naache
ugavalaa rajaniichaa naath re, naath re

I was wondering if it qualifies for shrungaar ras unsure.gif
I have the song in my collection....Will upload, if it seems OK for this thread !!!

of course Dhananjay. (If you feel like singing it to your wife/gf (real or imaginary tongue.gif) in a romantic mood, it is shrungaar ras wink.gif) Please go ahead and u/l it.

Here it is.... Not sure of the effect it'll have on GF. If she reads too much into it, I'll end up with a swollen eye !! tongue.gif

"dhund madhumatii" is a very nice soft mdelodius tune. and ga. di. ma. has written a song with fitting words that match the softness of the tune. All in all a great song matched with a great tune!

details:

dhund madhumatii raat re
chitrapaT: kiichakavadh (1959)
gaayikaa: lataa ma.ngeshakar
sangiit: maaster krishNaraav
giit: ga. di. maa.

I would classify it as shrungaar (talks about love after a long "virah"). However it is in a different mood. (I get the feeling that the woman's love is not being returned with the same intensity sad1.gif )

mangesh paaDagaavakar, the eminent poet of the new generation is not represented in this thread
So here is
