bye.gif Hi ALL!!!!

After ample positive encouragement and 'empowerment' from some good friends here (Anurag, Bibhas et al.) and everybody at the Sur Mein Na Sahi section..... (Haan.....Pata Hai Maska Lagaa Rahaa Hoon!!! laugh.gif tongue.gif ) and some friends at the "Oldies-Goldies" and "TV-Life" section........

I'm uploading a track ...which is from the recording of a LIVE Concert performed by our Fusion Band "KASP" .......The song is a Cover Version of a Famous Yesteryears Indian Instrumental Piece.......We start off with the main theme, go on to a small bit of solos..(Improvisations.......not part of the Original track)....and come back to the main Theme......... I'm sure you'll be able to guess the Original Theme song on hearing this.......

PS: I've been looking for the Original track of this song for a looooong time.....and unfortunately.......none of us at TV-Series could get hold of it.....And all I had was this Cover version...... Therefore.....as promised, I'm sharing it with you.... Hope you like it!!! smile.gif

smile.gif Thanks a ton....million......billion.....zillion....etc. for all your wonderful comments........Main aap sabka tahe dil se shukriyaada karna chaahta hoon......I'm feeling as if I'm on seventh heaven...ninth cloud at the moment.. wink2.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif Thanks Thanks Thanks!!!! (Just can't find a "HEAVILY BLUSHING SMILEY"....) wink2.gif :The heavily blushing innocent LOOK: wink2.gif

But I'm really happy that you took time off to download that big attachment.....and patiently listened to that........And this was the first ever time I had uploaded any of my stuff on the web.....and was keeping my fingers crossed as to what's gonna happen..... Just starting to wipe some sweat off my brow(s)...

By the way, as most of you would have guessed by now, the instrumental theme is that of the famous "Torch Song" from Doordarshan.....Remember there used to be a video aired on DD loooooong time back...with many of the famous Indian Sports personalities running with a burning torch in hand??? Well, this instrumental theme was the music for that video, (originally composed by Louis Banks).

Infact, this particular concert was a big occassion for us, as the audience comprised of many eminent personalities from the Indian music and arts scenario.....including the composer of this song Mr.Louis Banks himself!!! smile1.gif (T'ji...talk of goosebumps!!! tongue.gif laugh.gif ) And we had prepared this theme beforehand.....but that improvised bit.....off the theme....that you hear.....wasn't prepared.....(was done on the stage..) ..And we weren't sure whether we must play that song with its composer sitting in front of us with his family......(Agar Baadme gaaliyaan sunaayi toh???? unsure.gif ) Then, me and our keyboardist.....mustered some courage......and before the whole concert began (Well, we weren't the only performers.....all the other big 'baaps'...i mean all those celebs...Louis Banks, Loy Mendonca, Gino Banks.....and many others... also performed before us.......Ours was the last performance) We went and approached Mr.Banks......and asked his 'permission'.....And he gave us a stern...stone-hard look......(Which had us pale for those few seconds)......and suddenly....broke into a LOUD voice and said....."OF COURSE YOU CAN PLAY !!!!!" (Still maintaining the same :LOOK:) (Some competition for Talaikya-Priya-Preety etc??? wink2.gif) And we really BREATHED a LOUD sigh of relief....(Seriously..it was sooooo audible!!! Hehehe)

Then....the evening started....and went on for about 2-2-1/2 hrs....with all the celebs performing.....then......Finally....we were introduced on stage.....And we spoke a bit about this particular theme song.....and announced it as a 'Tribute' to Mr.Louis Banks.....who was sitting there........And Started off.....[Well....remember...that improvisation part wasn't ready as yet???......Well.....risk of playing....smthg...on the spot....risk of playing a song in front of its composer....(who hasn't even smiled as yet!!! tongue.gif )] We somehow came up with something on stage......And as we finished our first song...(THIS ONE).......The whole crowd broke into an applause....we can never forget.....and that wasn't all.......The moment came....When Mr.LOUIS BANKS Stood up and gave an ovation.....And we were stunned beyond limits.....(You must see the video...I'm blushing like anything....and bowing to him with hands folded......Hehehe.... tongue.gif ) Then we went on to play two more pieces....(our originals).....and it was one of our most memorable performances to date......Well...that's another story... smile1.gif

PS: Sorry for all that.....I'm not the one to indulge in any kind of self-praise or boast.....Hate that to the core.......Just....that...Was so filled with extreme nostalgic memories of all that had happened....Tried to pour out a bit......Sorry again!!! smile.gif

Hearty, very hearty congratulations for the wonderful piece. And the story was too interesting, and yes, I'd like to see the video too if you can u/l. I was short on time yesterday but kept listening to this several times while doing work. Brought back all the memories of the sportsters carrying the torch, and a bit of frustration that I couldn't get that piece, but listening to yours was wonderful! smile1.gif Great work indeed! biggrin.gif

Absolutely Shyam. But first let's get some specifics right. What kind of bansuri is it ( 6-hole, 7-hole, 8-hole ?) and more importantly what style are you interested in learning ? If it is carnatic, I won't be of much use but if it is Hindustani, I can do my bit. Let me know.

Shyam,
An 8-holed flute is designed for playing in carnatic style. While it can be used for playing hindustani as well, the fingering is going to be very different as compared to the standard hindustani fingering. Hindustani flutes are typically 6- or 7-holed with Sa played as top three holes closed. Carnatic flutes are typically smaller and Sa is played with top two holes closed. Since you're already trained in classical music, you should be able to play the notes by "ear", so I don't think it'll be a problem. However, if you're serious, I'd recommend getting a hindustani flute as it becomes easier later on with meend etc.

Wow Bibhas!!!! That was fantastic......great to finally hear you.... thumbs-up.gif .....Looking forward for more!!! smile1.gif

Well, as I mentioned I'm definitely serious about learning Hindustani.......Have checked the other flutes too........ (there were total 3.....sorry)......the second one.....is a 'small-sized' one....but with 8-continuous holes........and the third is a long, big one (Like the first one) ........but is having the 8 holes "spaced out" in a Three-Three-Two pattern.......... Are these pointers of any help???? (can the last one be used as a 6-holed flute as well......just asking....going by the deliberate pattern used in the making....) Or else.....will go in for a 6/7 holed flute........Do advise me.....after going through the 'observations' mentioned above... wink2.gif smile1.gif

And I'm sure you are going to be laughing like mad on seeing it......I've 'moved' my head throughout like anything......(still feels so embarassing to see myself like that.....never knew before that I used to 'move' my head so much while playing..... laugh.gif tongue.gif) and hence PM seems a much 'safer' option....than u/l at the forum.....what say??? Shyam,
Thanks for the nice words- both here and "there". Based on what you describe, all 3 are carnatic flutes. The reason why the hole placement differs on the bigger flute is simply to get the notes right. As I said, you can certainly start off with the big flute, see how you like it and then buy a hindustani flute. Being in Bombay, you can certainly get very good qualty hindustani flutes.
Ok, here is Lesson #1.
Hold the flute sideways and position the blowing hole. The blowing hole should be almost at the exact center of the lower lip. The flute should be placed under the lip and not 'on' the lip. It actually doesn't matter whether you hold the flute on the left side of your body or on the right side. Don't hold the flute too hard. Try to pull both your little fingers down. It automatically increases the pressure of the ring finger on the flute. Curve your fingers along the body of flute. It helps in a better grip. Press the flute firmly on the lower side of the lip. When you cover the holes, try to do so with the middle of the fingers rather than the fingertips (it becomes easier to learn this way when you move on to long bass flutes). When you open all the holes, use the little finger of the hand away from the blowing hole to support.
First thing to do is to try to produce a consistent note from the flute in shruti. Close the first two holes near the blowing hole and blow smoothly. It takes a while before sound comes, keep practicing and try to change the angle between your lip and the flute. I'm sure your dad can help you with the grip and blow since he's already learning it. Once you are able to play a note, try to tune an electronic (or a real) tanpura to that note. That will be your Sa. (For a hindustani flute, the Sa is played by closing the first three holes). Now try to play the Sa consistently trying to match its tune with the Tanpura. Once you achieve this, we can go to Lesson # 2.

And hence tried again, with the fingertips......But I'm sure.....once I'm more comfortable with handling of the instrument, I'll start using the middle of my fingers.....) Good start Shyam. I think I know why you had better luck with fingertips than the middle of the fingers. Can you tell me what is the size of the flute you are playing - length and diameter ? Smaller flutes are easy to play with fingertips. No harm, you can play it that way too and if you find it comfortable doing it that way on longer flutes, then that's fine as well. There's no hard and fast rule.

BoohooHoo... cry.gif Thats soo bad.....the thread's VANISHED!!!!!!!! OH No......No wonder when I spent so much time on the Forum search engine, couldn't get anything on that.....(except OUR posts here ABOUT that thread... tongue.gif) I would have loved to check that out.......Toh kya hua.....pics nahin hai toh......atleast by reading others comments....kuch toh clue milta....(Remember....Shyam - the THINKER??? tongue.gif) And its always fun to read the posts...... smile1.gif

Well......TTG...first...you say....... some of you were getting "Uncomfortable" with JUST your PICS out there......And you are having the guts to pull my leg about uploading a whole video itself.....???? (Video is much much more than a PIC.......yeh toh aapko pata hoga hi... tongue.gif) (Especialy with me moving my head....so silly......Aap ke pics toh still hoti hai... wink2.gif) Again.....it isn't that bad.....like 'shaking' the head...and bad body language on stage....(like some of the artistes have)......its just....that...(dunno how and why)..I got a bit too involved....and was 'into' the mood....(more of a 'trance'??? tongue.gif) and was moving my head as I played.....But yes.....it definitely WAS damn embarassing to know that about myself on watching the video for the first time....I felt very 'wrong' about it....and started working on getting better 'control' of myself ...... smile1.gif ...... (sochiye agar aap meri jagah hote toh kaisa lagta... smile.gif )

Yes TTG.......you bet......with such a great Guru like Bibhas......you can very well imagine how well the lessons would be going..... Yes Bibhas ...I'm really working hard on it....tremendously enjoying the experience... smile1.gif And just now checked (measured) the dimensions of the flute for you.....Its 18 1/2 Inches in length....and 1 cm in Diameter.... (including the wooden exterior)....Is that info of any use??? Did I measure the right way??? PLsss let me know more on this.... thumbs-up.gif

Yaar, kaahe ko sharminda karte ho, main koi great-wate nahiin hoon. I am already wondering how I will be able to translate the fingering from a 6-hole flute to an 8-hole flute. I am kinda banking on your classically trained ear for that. Measurements seem ok, proves my hypothesis. You'll have better luck using fingertips with this flute, so keep it that way. Like I said, the important thing is playing the note right.
Bibhas
p.s. Come to think of it, instead of taxing my already senile brain, why not use the fingering your Dad uses ? After all, the swaras are same whether it is CM or HM, right ?
gkshyam
I know...this must be troublesome for you.......But...first of all....I was very keen on learning the Hindustani style........Second....I agree the swaras are same in both systems.......so why not learn from my dad.....the basics.......(since he's completed more than the beginner's level......1.5 yrs into it now....)

But...the problem is.....my dad's tooooooooooooo busy a man...for me to sit and learn ....After lot of coaxing ..one fine day.....I made him teach me a bit......I progressed upto Sa-Re-Ga......(3 notes!! Gr888 na??? tongue.gif) But after that....(that was loooong ago) we never sat together..or discussed flute......he's too busy.....with all his work....infact...he himself hasn't gone for his classes for about a month now......due to excessive work load.....So..I lost all hopes of learning from him..... sad1.gif And....hence......I tried learning it from you ...Infact.....to be honest....I've completely forgotten those 3 notes too...that I had learnt then from him......

I think it would be a much better and easier option for both of us...If I get another flute (6/7 holed)??? Then your already taxed brain won't be taxed as much.....And my lessons can also progress.......What say??? smile1.gif

That would definitely be easier for me, especially since you eventually have to buy a 6/7 hole flute anyway. Just keep one thing in mind though, make sure you buy a flute that is well tuned and all notes are in key- a lot of the cheap stuff is just that, cheap stuff. Make sure you go to a reputed shop and get someone to play it for you and you can listen and make sure they are in tune. Meanwhile, keep trying to get the Sa right on the current flute. I can take you through the first few notes using an 8-holed flute.
Sa = top two holes closed.
Shuddha Re = topmost hole closed
Shuddha Ga = all holes open

Can you try this for me, if you close all holes and play the note, does it play shuddha madhyam (eqv of shuddha madhyamam of CM) ?
gkshyam
Hmm....yes......hoping to buy a 6-7 holed Bansuri pretty soon. By the way, did try out your request, of closing all the holes and playing, and to be honest, it didn't sound like Shuddha Madhyam ....Or rather, no 'proper' sound came out.....it was just plain.....blowing sound..... (like how it comes, when you struggle to get the proper sound in the initial days) tongue.gif wink2.gif Dunno if I played something wrong, OR whether there was really was no note in such a position.....You may guide me better.... smile1.gif Looking forward to hearing from you.......Waise bhi...its been quite some time since this thread and my class made any sort of "progress"...... tongue.gif smile1.gif

Sounds more like a technical hassle to me Shyam. It is usually a bit more difficult to get a note in that position, requires all holes to be closed well with no air leaks and also requires the blowing to be sharpened a little bit. Oh well, never mind. If you're gonna get a 6/7 hole flute anyway....
Bibhas
p.s. when you get the seller to play the flute for you, let him play each note with the hole fully open. Use the first three holes closed position as Sa and the flute should play a perfect aarohana/avarohana of Kalyani for you. That's how you know it's in tune. Here's a convenient fingering chart that might be useful for you:

Oh Wow!!!! That was quite an informative chart Bibhas....thanks so much...... Well.....the bad news is that....with all the rains and related problems.......Still not found the shub-muhurat to go and Check out some good Hindustani flutes........ Hope to get one soon.... Phir shaayd the lessons can make faster progress... sad1.gif

Hi Bibhas........Long time since we got in touch.......Wanted to tell you something...... I tried our a friend's flute (He plays Hindustani clasical)...Infact.....not so close a friend.......Had met him for the first time......just day before yesterday.....and got the opportunity to check out his flute......His was a six holed flute......And I had a very very tough time handling it....I couldn't even hold it properly...and was finding it very difficult to grip it......My fingers (guess, they must be small... tongue.gif) were not able to close in properly on the 6 holes.....(Couldn't properly "reach out" the gaps.....between each.... sad1.gif) Need your advice soon...regarding this technical...(or maybe... "physical") hassle that I'm facing..... Will I be able to play it after all???? sad1.gif Please reply soon..... sad1.gif

Don't worry Shyam, I assure you that you will be able to reach all the holes of that very same flute. Typically, hindustani artists like to use flutes that are about 30 inches long and are in Key of B (Tonic of E). However, those are meant for trained flautists and not for students who are just starting. I would suggest you pick up a flute that has a Tonic of B or C (would be 19-21 inches long) and you should be able to close the holes well with such a flute. Once you get the basics, you can slowly work your way up to a 24 inch, then a 27 inch and finally a 30 inch or even a 34-inch. When I started learning, I had trouble with even a 20-inch flute ( like you, I too had first gotten the blow and finger technique from a carnatic flute) but now I routinely play a 31-inch flute.

Oh...is it so Bibhas??? :PHEW: tongue.gif I was really tensed up for quite some time.......I thought, maybe my fingers are small.....or deformed....and I will never be able to play the Flute..... sad1.gif cry.gif Aapne humen tasalli dee......iskeliye.....bahut bahut dhanyavaad.... smile1.gif I shall try out your idea.....of starting off with a smaller flute......Kya pata......I maybe able to close the holes properly...and get a proper grip too......(to start with... tongue.gif) Please continue posting here Sir... smile1.gif Thanks again, meri tension door karne ke liye... smile1.gif :sigh of relief: wink2.gif

GURUJI!!!!! Pranaam!! bow.gif bow.gif smile1.gif One good news for you!!!!! smile1.gif I somehow managed to go to a music shop in the city yesterday, and buy a Hindustani flute!!! (FIINNNNAAAALLLLLYYYY!!!!!!! tongue.gif tongue.gif wink2.gif)

This one's smaller in size....and tuned to the 2D scale........Its a 7-holed flute.....(6 holes at the 'regular' places, and the seventh one a bit away....towards the non-blowing end of the flute) And most important thing is.....I simply tried it out at the shop.....and actually shocked myself....by getting the sound right at the first try... blink.gif ph34r.gif wink2.gif ....just played 3-4 notes........got happy....and bought it...........Now to start off with the lessons on a regular basis...... wink2.gif

PS: {Planning to try out the notes from that CHART you had sent me, today smile1.gif}
