Born to a musical family in 1947, his real name is Pervez Akhtar. He received his initial training in Hindustani classical music from his father, Bashir Hussain Rahi. Later he was trained by Ustad Mehdi Hssan, who also renamed him as Pervez Mehdi. He also learnt Sitar from Siraj Ahmed Qureshi.
His first break was through Radio Pakistan in 1968. Like his guru, he composes all the ghazals himself. Mehdi Hassan's influence on his compositions and rendering are quite heavy. There is even a resemblance in their soft voices. But, unlike Mehdi Hassan, his ghazals are light.
Pervez Mehdi has released quite a few albums, both in Pakistan and in India. He also gives concerts in both the countries regularly.
