Music legend Manna Dey returns to playback singing after nearly two decades

Fans of singing legend Manna Dey can now rejoice! The doyen with the mellifluous voice has decided to return to singing after a hiatus of nearly 20 years.
Dey has recently recorded a song for an upcoming Hindi film titled Umar, directed by Karan Razdan.
He spoke to BT in an exclusive interview from his Bangalore residence. Dey says that he never really ‘left’ singing per se. “I have been doing stage shows and singing songs in various languages. It was just that 1 ceased to do any playback singing since Prahaar’s release, which was back in 1991,” says Dey. He adds that it was the severe dearth of songs to suit his age which prevented him from lending his voice to film tracks.
“The subject of the film was close to my heart. It deals with the trials and tribulations of three, senior citizens who are battling life’s challenges. I could identify with the three men in the film,” says Dey of his reasons for lending his voice to this particular song.
Shamir Tandon opines that getting Dey to sing his song is one of his highest achievements. “I am truly blessed and honoured that Mannada agreed so graciously to sing this song. I managed to get Lata Mangeshkar for Page 3 - my first film and now Mannada is a double bounty for me,” says an ebullient Tandon, who says that he went down to Bangalore to record the track with Dey.
“The extreme professionalism of such greats is something that I have seen as a common factor in both Latadidi and Mannada, something so severely lacking in our newer lot of singers,” concludes Tandon. So will we be hearing a lot more from the great singer? “I will continue singing for as long as 1 can,” he signs off.
