Have there been any female lyricists ?
I can’t think of any.

Come to think of it, I can only think of only Usha Khanna as the only female MD, were/are there any more?

Lets list.

Thanks

Neither "Tulsi" is a female. We all know he is Inderjit Singh 'Tulsi'.

Maya Govind is of course a female who wrote some hit numbers like

Naino main darpan hai darpan main koyi....Aarop

Jab se tumne bansi bajaai re...Aarop

Yahan kaun hai asli kaun hai naqli......Qaid

O laila o laila tere pyar main majnu rota hai....Aafat

Then there is Rani Malik who wrote songs for Aashiqui and Baazigar

Some more:
1. Sudha Malhotra was MD for some movie, don't remember which one though.

2. Indu Jain wrote lyrics for Chashm-e-baddoor and a few other Sai Paranjpe movies

3. Kishori Amonkar was MD for Drishti

4. Ila Arun was MD for Govind Nihalani's Rukmavati Ki Haveli

5. Khursheed Hallauri wrote lyrics for Parinda and Market. If you're wondering who this is, remember this wonderful Ashaji-Suresh Wadkar number:

pyaar ke mod pe chhodoge jo baahein merii
tumko DhuunDhengii zamaane mein, nigaahein merii

If you move outside the realm of HFM, Bhanumathi was a prolific singer/composer/lyricist for telugu movies. Lata mangeshkar composed in Marathi under the name of "Anandghan".

Bibhas it is said that during the making of the film "Didi", the music director N. Dutta fell ill and the track was needed urgently. Young Sudha Malhotra was the singer. She stepped in and took over. She composed that marvelous piece ‘Tum Mujhe Bhool Bhi Jao to ye haque hai tumko...meri baat aur hai maine to mohabbat ki hai.
Such beautiful was the melody that even the great Mukeshji could not resist singing that one. blab.gif

Saroj Mohini Nayyar is related to composer O.P. Nayyar. She even penned down the famous song- 'preetam aan milo dukhiya jiya bulaye preetam aan milo.'
As far as female composers are concerned, both the melody queens Lata Mangeshkar and Noor Jehan have composed some songs and done a decent job.

1)Saba Afghani was by all accounts a male lyricist. (Manek Premchand in his book describes him a "he" smile1.gif Saba is a common female name...but remember Saba Karim the former Indian Wicketkeeper?

2)Tulsi is also a name used by both men and women. And as someone has already pointed it out this particular perosn was a guy. Arshi too is name which is used both by girls and guys.

3)If the details of this Naag Mandir song are correct, this is very very interesting indeed! Because O P Nayyar has mentioned it time and again that the lyrics he wrote under the pseudonym of his wife (Saroj Mohini Nayyar) was primarily for the reason that he could collect the payment...both for music as well as lyrics. He also mentions that his wife did not have any interest, nor the skills to write lyrics. That's why if Saroj Mohini Nayyar has written for L-P, it means that either OPN was not speaking the truth about his wife's talents or OP Nayyar wrote the lyrics for L-P in the same year when he got the lyrics of his own films made that year by varied people such as :Aziz Kashmiri, P.L. Santoshi,Kaifi Azmi, Shevan Rizvi, Anjaan, S H Bihari & Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. Both these scenarios seem highly unlikely.

4)Pilibheeti? which Pilibheeti. Pilibheet is a town in Uttar Pradesh. If Pilibheeti is a lady lyricist so could be (Majrooh) Sultanpuri, (Kaifi) Azmi, (S H) Bihari, (Shakeel) Badayuni and (Sahir) Ludhiyanvi.

5)Nida Fazli is of course a very accomplished Urdu poet.

I think all of us should be a little careful before passing off assumptions as facts.

Humble Bhai, I think Pilibheeti is name of some place,
city/town. Two names come to mind : Anjam Pilibheeti
and Nazim Philibeeti. Can't say about the gender of
AP but NP was male. He was brother of producer, director,
lyricist etc Wali Sahib.

A bona fide addition to the the list of female lyricists: Padma Sachdev, the Dogri poet, wrote the lyrics for at least two songs from "Prem Parbat":

- ye neer kahaan se barase hain
- mera chhotaasaa gharabaar

Great lyrics in the first one.

Bulo C. Rani was an accompalished Singer and Music Director. He was an assistant to Khemchand Prakash during his Ranjit Studios days and sang several songs under his baton. He started as an independent music director in 1944. His first musical hit was "Moorti" in 1945 in which there were several melodious songs, the best of the lot being that immortal melody, "Badariya Baras Gayi Us Paar" sung by Khurshid, Hameeda and Mukesh. Throughout his career he lived in the shadow of his more renown contemporaries such as Anil Biswas, Gyan Dutt, Khemchand Prakash, Naushad, S.D.Burman, Husnlal Bhagatram and later several other music directors but in terms of the quality of music he could match up to the best. His musical peak was of course Jogan, Dilip Kumar na Nargis starrer but no less beautiful was the music of "Bilwamangal" with such immortal melodies as "Parwanon Se Preet Seekh Lein", "Mohan Pyare Ab Aur Saaz Par Ga Re", "Panghat Pe Morey Shyam" "Ab Sooni Bhayi Re Atariya Hamar". He maintained the quality in his music right till the ned of his 25 year career. One only has to listen to "Mangne Se Jo Maut Mil Jaati, Kaun Jeeta Is Zamane Mein" , a Lata Mangeshkar beauti from 1966 film Sunhere Qadam. The manner of his death suggests that he took this song too seriously.

Many thanks for uploading this beautiful number. I am not sure but it is likely that this number is actually a repeat of BCR's own composition, "Mangne Se Jo Maut Mil Jaati, Kaun Sehta Dukh Zamane Mein", sung by Talat Mahmood in the 1960 movie, Abdullah.
