Here is a question for administrators. Is the forum for Hemant Kumar more appropriate under "Legendary Singers" or "Legendary Music Directors". Difficult choice indeed. In my view, at both places. He was a fabulous composer just as a gifted singer, in the mould of his idol Pankaj Mullick. Just as Pankajda gave some of his best compositions to K.L.Saigal, Hemantda too did not hesitate to use other singers. Mohammed Rafi, in particular was used extensively by him. From Miss Mary (O Raat Ke Musafir and Brindaban Ka Krishna Kanhaiya) to Biwi Aur Makan (Jaane Kahan Dekha Hai). In one of his last movies, Khamoshi, he chose Kishore for "Woh Sham Kuchh Ajeeb Thi" even when he himself could have easily reproduced the magic in his own voice as "Tum Pukar Lo", no doubt the fact that two songs were on different actors might have influenced his decision. Nevertheless, the undisputed fact is that he deserves to be right up there as a composer as a singer.

It is like asking whether Guru Dutt was a director or actor!! I think it is enough that Hemant Kumar is recognized. Moreover he started as a dinger, his career is more of a singer than MD which is not little either!!!

facts:-

Guru Dutt attended one of the first public shows of 'Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam' in a Bombay cinema hall, and saw how the audience reacted to a shot featured in the last song of the film, 'Sahil ki taraf kishti le chal' (Steer the boat to the shore), which showed Chhoti Bahu (Meena Kumari) resting her head on Bhootnath's (Guru Dutt) lap on their fateful and only outing. People were laughing and whistling.....

Guru Dutt cut the entire song and reshot the scene.

The tune was resused in the song : Ya dil ki suno duniyawalon....

from Anupama (Dharmendra, Sharmilla Tagore, Shashikala) 1966.

One of my all time favorites, though I do find Gulzar tortuous for the most part. This one speaks to me despite the Chuppi and the partly unfathomable lyrics

For those that love "needle scratches", you can hear them here in most of these CD rips. I do understand that CD rips are not really that different than Vinyl rips/ recordings, but the point is, they have been done professionally (one hopes) and hence are as true a sound as possible; w/o hisses, pops and crackles that ruin at least my listening pleasure.

It was wonderful to listen to these while uploading them ... thank you folks

I love the Lata version of this song. What a lovely composition and there is
so much beauty to her rendition. Just that light feather-like perfect touch in
her voice. Had it on a CD that I happen to have with me while travelling. So
this song plays repeatedly as I negotiate the streets of Washington DC.
And considering the rush-hour traffic here, THANK GOD I have this song.
