Kaagaz Ke Phool was filmed at a time in Guru Dutt's life when his domestic situation was in a turmoil. There are more reels that have been edited out than what is shown. The story sequence etc. kept on changing everyday almost.

There was no situation in the film for Waqt Ne Kiya scene. When S.D. Burman composed the music, Guru Dutt really liked it and asked lyricist Kaifi Azmi to write a refrain for it. He kept on writing several ones and neither Guru dutt or S.D. Burman or Kaifi Azmi was satisfied. At last Guru Dutt told Kaifi Azmi, " Leave it for now as I am not able to express myself as to what I want, we will use the music for a different film." Kaifi Azmi did not want to concede defeat and asked for one more chance. He sat away from everyone facing the other way and wrote the IMMORTAL WAQT NE KIYA.....

Central Theme of Kaagaz Ke Phool according to Kaifi Azmi is in these words:

Bichhde sabhi baari baari......

which was not clear to audience at that time!!!!???????? blab.gif blab.gif blab.gif

HMV credits this song's lyrics to shailendra but in the Movie Titles, there is no mention of Shailendra, only Kaifi Azmi. Any comments????

This song is a favorite of Shabana Azmi. She rightly says that it is indeed a genius mind of Kaifi azmi at work here. It is easy to express sad emotions with serious lyrics but to express the heartfelt pain of Shanti in separating from Suresh Sinha in a kid's rhyme is indeed marvellous and lyrics composing at its best.

KAIFI AZMI (Athar Hussain Rizvi, hails from a small village called Mijwan, near Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh)

Guru Dutt considered Khyaam for the music but later Burman accepted. as S.D. burman and sahir never wanted to work together again after pyaasa as well as Sahir was not in good terms with Guru dutt, Kaifi azmi was given the task by Guru Dutt himself.

The FULL VERSION is here, only first stanza was used in the film. It depicts one of the saddest moments in the film...

To my knowledge, this song is a Shailendra creation (his only released/commonly known song from this movie).
