I would like to start this forum by what is the most
beautiful piece of music any where in any form for me. "heer".
To start with I'll upload "sultan bahu's Heer". One of the best versions of heer
out there. This is on one full cd.

hope active participation from every one.

apparently there is a volume 2 of this cd as well, which i havent seen available anywhere, if u happen to have the second cd, pleaze let me know

the announcer anounces at the end of the cd about the 2nd volume.
however I looked for it and could not find it my self.

But I have the rest of the part from this cd. I am guessing that
u already have it. if not let me know.
And that heer by various artist: I can't wait to get my hands on that.
I have a cassete of heer by various artist but not equipment to digitise it.

And khan sahib. I could not read that poetry in english script.
do u have that in shahmukhi script? i can't even read gurmukhi

Heer is traditionally sung without any musical instrument or with one or two instruments only. I have downloaded the first two versions of an unknown artist and of gulam ali saheb. Kuch Khaas maja nahin aya sunne main . Extra music, more than necessary, have been used in these two versions.

Well this Asa mastana version is a personal favorite.
it is very very folk. pure folk.
And maheshks sahib, the first one is by "iqbal bahu", and that
one has only bansuri in it.
I guess it depends upon what u expect or what u grew up listening to
I don't mind heer with music, minimum however.

Ghulam ali has a few more versions of heer. one of them is
much better than this one.

I especially like the mehdi hassan version. have u listened to it.
he has added a little classcial
touch to it.

I uploaded 'doli charhdiyan' on NJ forum, long back, when you were not there probably. But, I don't promise now, as it is you know how long I made you wait for 'tumhari arzoo mein'

Coming back to Heer Ranjha, there was another piece by Naseem Begum, 'hirr aakhadi jogiya', but I've lost the tape

pulkit, the wait was worth last time for " tumhari arzoo"
and it is goning to be worth this time too.
noor jehan has really sung them well. I'll wait.

Well, here I'm with the first Heer piece by Noor Jehan, film-Heer Ranjha(1970), music -Khurshid Anwar. It is always a pleasure to hear Noor Jehan sing such traditional pieces and she has sung quite a few of them. Her rendition of traditional verses of legends of 'Mirza Sahiban' and 'Nooran Nabii' are super.

Yes, the Heer piece is small, it makes one yearn for more. However, the 'Mirza' piece I mentioned is fairly long so I guess it will kind of compensate. Incidently, my friend Inaam had uploaded the Mirza piece long back. I also have the same track on an audio tape in a better quality so would get down to make an mp3 out of it soon.

And what I'll do is that I'll start a thread on 'Mirza' itself as I even have a rendition of the same by Shamshad Begum and another Punjabi singer whose name I forget. So, in all it will make a good thread.

Vow, here is the same piece by Melody Queen Noor Jehan in Punjabi- 'doli charhdiyan maariyaan hiir chikaan'

This rafi version is
special, even though it is in urdu,
it is still very beautiful. rafi always being eager to show
the range of his vocals, hits high notes in this one too.

this NJ's version was too short again.
"tishnagi rah jati hay".

khwaja khursheed always used chorus to good use.

I have a complete audio cassett of 'Heer' sung by Iqbal Bahu. He is most famous 'Heer Singer' of Pakistan.

He is the best heer singer, I agree with u.

The Heer by Asa singh Mastana also featured in the Hindi film "Dooj Ka Chand" music director-Roshan. He was paid a paltry sum of Rs101/- and second class rail fare in those days. Sh. Mastana did not lent his voice thereafter in any other hindi movie. But he sang a song in the punjabi film "Satlej De Kande". He is one of the best punjabi folk singers.

I think it was Waqas's first post in this thread. Part one was uploaded earler but now deleted. Waqas have this 'Heer' on CD and can easily upload. It is a very long track and I have a slow internet connection.

Thanks kumar sahab. The quawali you uploaded about the heer ranjha theme is awesome! But i'm not sure it is a "heer". By heer, I mean the composition penned by Waris Shah and sung in the typical tune that all artists sing it in. I'm wondering if Nusrat saab ever sang that piece (there would be no quawali troupe and very little accompanying instrumentation).
